Marble floor in the Cathedral of Siena, Tuscany. Medieval church, 1348. The marble inlaid floor of the cathedral is a collective masterpiece of Sienese artists, which was created over a period of 600 years. The first subjects appeared in 1369, and the entire work was completed in the 19th century. The subjects change as you move inside the cathedral: first pagan paintings, then philosophical miniatures about the meaning of life, which are replaced by Old Testament subjects and, finally, Christian parables. The technique of execution of the drawings is close to engraving: the contours of the scratched out drawing were filled with marble chips of different colours. On the façade of Siena Cathedral, among the prophets and patriarchs, such as Isaiah, Habakkuk, Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, there are also Mary of Moses, Balaam, the Eritrean Sibyl, and more surprisingly there are Plato and Aristotle. The statues have been removed from their original positions, and are exhibited at eye level in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Siena. The monumental statues, larger than life size, were conceived for a view from a distance and from below but carefully finished in the visible parts. In this statue the supressed emotional fervour seems to have permeated every detail of the form. EN: Baptistery of St. John in Siena was built between 1316 and 1325 by Camaino di Crescentino, the father of Tino di Camaino. Its design was probably goes back to Giacomo di Mino del Pellicciaio. The façade, in Gothic style, is unfinished in the upper part, such as the apse of the cathedral. EN: Maestà is an altarpiece composed of many individual paintings commissioned by the city of Siena in 1308 from the artist Duccio di Buoninsegna and is his most famous work. The front panels make up a large enthroned Madonna and Child with saints and angels, and a predella of the Childhood of Christ with prophets. The reverse has the rest of a combined cycle of the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ in a total of forty-three small scenes; several panels are now dispersed or lost. The whole structure reached a height of almost five meters. It is a superb standard of craftsmanship, and the exquisite colouring and supple draughtsmanship create effects of great beauty. The painting ornamented the high altar of the Cathedral of Siena until 1505.
