This coverall is printed with one of the Bulgarian People's Army's earliest iterations of their iconic, long-lived "Splinter" camouflage pattern family that saw service throughout the Cold War era and into the early-mid 2000's. The first versions of the Bulgarian splinter pattern, produced either during or just after WW2, are obviously heavily inspired but crudely copied after the original German pattern, and notably lacked the distinctive "raindrop" line shapes featured in the German version. This variant was first issued around 1953 and saw the addition of the "raindrop" shapes missing from the first two variants but are notably "squiggly", a distinction that would stay with all versions of the Bulgarian splinter patterns throughout its life. The printing is still obviously crude, being a simple lighter green and reddish-brown shapes printed on a tan base fabric with noticeably ink bleeding, but it laid the basic pattern foundation for the future printings of the general pattern. The coverall that was introduced with this variant also became a mainstay of the BNA; identical coveralls were made in later versions of the Bulgarian splinter, Frogskin, and raindrop patterns, as well as plain drab green and snow white. It features a button entry, oversized hood, internally divided button-chest magazine pockets, two small button hip pockets, hand pockets, a waist drawcord, and button-adjustable wrist and ankle cuffs. Camouflage would never become standard issue in the BNA, and these coveralls were exclusively issued to specialized units, namely paratroopers, sappers, and reconnaissance units. This coverall is still in decent shape for being ~60-70ish years old, but sadly has experienced some fading and the contract stamp is no longer legible. The "1953" model splinter pattern was produced until around 1959 and was the last iteration of the Bulgarian splinter to have a bright, almost dry/arid coloration before the pattern would continually develop a darker and more green coloration. #camouflage #camo #camopedia #uniform #collection #bulgaria #bulgarian #bulgaria🇧🇬 #bulgarianarmy #bulgarianpeoplesarmy #splinter #splintercamo #coverall #eastbloc #warsawpact

Originally proposed in April 2012 as a civilian security corps of the Mexican Army, the official final formation and activation of the Gendarmería Nacional (National Gendarmerie) of Mexico was delayed until August 2014. By that time, its duties and authority were transferred to becoming a division of the Policía Federal (Federal Police), as a highly trained and well-equipped gendarmerie to support regular police in more dangerous duties. On top of regular training from the Ejército Mexicano (Mexican Army), the Gendarmería Nacional also received training from the French National Gendarmerie and jungle training from the Colombian National Police commandos. Their primary duty uniform featured a copy of the US Navy's NWU-1 "Blueberries" camouflage pattern printed on an ACU-cut uniform and baseball-type cap, made by Tru-Spec of Atlanco in Honduras from US printed fabric (But not original US Navy fabric as it lacks the USN ACE logo). The GN added their own insignia and cut and sewed large reflective stencil panels to the backs of the coats, and this particular example was tailored and taken in, cutting the GN added tag in half at the hem. The GN were often issued brand new weapons as well, such as the CZ 805 BREN A1, DSA SA58, and CZ P-09, and were surveyed to enjoy a higher public opinion than the regular Federal Police. Their existence was not long however, and by October 1, 2019 the GN was officially disbanded as its duties were handed over to the Guardia Nacional de México (Mexican National Guard), the newest branch of the Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA) (Ministry of National Defense), giving La Gendarmería Nacional de la Policía Federal de México a mere ~5 year long operational existence. This original coat is almost entirely intact except for the region/unit patch typically worn above the flag and the rank patch, which were often oddly worn on the neck with the Mandarin collar popped up. #camouflage #camo #camopedia #uniform #collection #mexico #méxico #mexico🇲🇽 #policia #policiafederal #gendarmeria #gendarmerianacional #acu #nwu #federales #políciafederal #bluecamo

Exactly one year ago, we showed you how the Bulgarian Frogskin and the experimental DPM of the Bulgarian army performed in the greenest time of the year. Now, it's time to conduct a comprehensive test of the Bulgarian DPM, the main camo used by the Bulgarian army from 2004 until 2018. The pattern is dominantly green, with the dark green being a slightly cooler hue. You can see in our story and Instagram highlights that it is quite close to the colour of oak leaves. We've also included some bird view photos taken at the edge of the forest and inside it. What can we say? The camouflage blended well in the areas of the forest with more sunlight. It works well at the edge of the forest and when seen from the air. However, if it falls into denser shade, the pattern begins to darken. From our test, we can conclude that the Bulgarian DPM definitely performs best in oak woods. One of the earliest camouflage patterns of the Kuwait military was this originally British-designed four-color desert DPM pattern adopted in the 1980's. Tested by the British as early as 1985 but largely abandoned and exported to Kuwait and Iraq (though scant examples of British troops can be seen wearing it in Operation Granby, and UAE and Saudi forces also copied it), the four-color desert DPM uniforms produced for the Kuwaiti military were printed on a variety of items, seen here on one of several styles of simple button-field shirts but also trousers, French M64 type jackets, winter helmet liner caps, patrol caps, para smocks, coveralls, ponchos, and other items. Although these "L'Berge" tagged items are seemingly of French make, these uniforms were actually made in South Korea and China. After Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, mass quantities of Kuwaiti desert DPM uniforms were looted by the Iraqis, who were still largely outfitted in solid and camouflaged green uniforms after recently ending their war with Iran, which was often fought in the Southern marshy swamplands. Then, in another handoff of possession, scores of the ex-Kuwaiti-now-ex-Iraqi desert DPM uniforms were looted by Coalition troops during the Gulf War, which caused confusion back in the day among collectors as to their original origins as Iraq had also been sold the same pattern by the British in the late 1980's, some of the Iraqi versions of which were still tagged as British MOD contract items. I was thrilled to find this shirt in a thrift store up in Oregon a little while back, brought back by a US veteran who looted it from the Iraqis, who had looted it from the Kuwaitis. This particular shirt is still scantly stained with oil spots. #camouflage #camo #uniform #collection #camopedia #kuwait #kuwaiti #kuwaitarmy #iraq #iraqi #iraqiarmy #gulfwar #opgranby #operationgranby #desert #desertcamo #dpm #dpmcamo #desertdpm #loot #british #desertstorm #operationdesertstorm

Adopted in 1980, this beautiful, striking "grasslands" camouflage pattern was adopted by the South West African Police (SWAPOL) for general use by all land-based officers and constables. Featuring finely detailed reddish-brown shapes along with striped-and-speckled tan shapes over a dark green base, the pattern was printed on a variety of shirts, jackets, trousers, shorts, t-shirts, and flap caps. Although commonly referred to as the "Koevoet pattern" as it was indeed also initially issued to the Koevoet COIN unit, later in the war Koevoet switched to wearing plain light green uniforms to differentiate themselves from rank-and-file SWAPOL personnel, and this grasslands pattern was then on exclusively worn by regular SWAPOL cops. Materials and the pattern itself varied, as some uniforms were made of Airtex-like fabric and therefore produced much more muted colors than the typical thicker cotton-based uniforms. As the Border War raged on, later production examples of grasslands camouflage uniforms began to experience declining quality, as cheaper buttons and rougher stitching and finish work can be seen on the uniforms, and in some cases pocket closures, flaps, or even the pockets themselves became completely omitted. The pattern too can often be seen with blurrier, less defined shapes in later production examples, likely the result of the printing screens being worn down over the years. Common makers of these uniforms include Thrustor Group and A.I.R., the latter of which generated some confusion that their uniforms had Anti-Infrared capabilities but more than likely is simply the manufacturer. The jacket is an earlier production with a silk Thrustor Group tag and salmon-pink buttons, sadly missing its fur pile liner. The pattern saw service from 1980 until 1989, when the SWAPOL switched to dark gray uniform. #camouflage #camo #uniform #collection #camopedia #southafrica #southwestafrica #southwestafrican #southwestafricanpolice #swapol #koevoet #african #borderwar #southafricanborderwar #koevoetcamo

“Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nzi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world. Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely. But this is the year 1944 ! Much has happened since the Nzi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world marching together to Victory! I have full confidence in your devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good Luck! Our most recent test of our Pencott Greenzone kit by @mordortac was photographed a year and a half ago. With the coming of spring and the resurgence of vibrant greens in nature, we took the opportunity to test its effectiveness. What did we find? In areas where foliage has yet to fully flourish, like in oak forests which still retain a layer of fallen leaves, Pencott Greenzone performs well. Its efficacy is particularly evident in locations with a mixture of dead and fresh grass. However, some challenges arise in environments saturated entirely with greenery. As depicted in the title photo and in the sixth pic, a noticeable yellowing occurs under such conditions. Yet it is worth noting that in most cases one can easily physically hide themselves in such dense leaves, despite the camouflage not being green enough. In light of these observations, we are planning a comparative study between Pencott Greenzone and Phantomleaf WASP I Z2, with tests for both in the spring and latter - in the fall. Because our free time is limited, we invite your to suggest the terrain for these evaluations: should it be mainly flat lowlands, an oak forest, a mixed forest with pines, or maybe a higher altitude beech forest with a bit of rocks? #pencott #pencottgreenzone #camotest #camopattern #camopedia #camouflage #militarycamo #militaryuniform #uniform #airsoft #camo #airsoftuniform #tactical #pattern #camoprint #airsofter #milsim #military #woodland #forest #armypattern

Referred to simply as the "third jungle pattern", this woodland variant, with some changes to the fabric, cut, and colors of the pattern, was the standard issue camouflage pattern of the Bangladesh Army from 1995 to 2008. While initial production versions had darker greens and very light, khaki colored branch shapes, sometime by the late 90's or 2000's the Bangladeshi third jungle pattern gained a distinctly brighter, more vibrant color arrangement with lighter greens, yellow branch shapes, and reddish/purplish blobs. The pattern changed again in 2008, returning to a much more traditional US woodland coloration, but stocks of these vibrant "yellow" jungle camouflage uniforms continued to be worn well into the 2010's. This uniform has some of the strangest features I've ever seen on a military combat uniform, many of which are geared towards aesthetics and have little practical use. To start, this uniform retains red piping around the collar as worn by Bangladeshi Army junior commissioned officers. The oversized epaulets, which are actually lined with a thin cardboard or construction type paper to give them a flat, flexible yet rigid structure for pinning rank insignia and unit titles onto, have holes which appear to indicate its former wear by a মাস্টার ওয়ারেন্ট অফিসার (MWO) Master Warrant Officer. The whole uniform is made of an incredibly soft, likely 100% cotton material that while very comfortable, seems like it would be very hot in the jungle and weak to field conditions. All pockets close by incredibly small press stud snaps, and the trouser waist has a simple metal hook and loop for the waist as found on dress pants, though later iterations of these uniforms seem to have gone to regular buttons closures for everything. While these uniforms have largely faded away in exchange for the newer US woodland-colored jungle camouflage uniforms after 2008, a large amount of equipment, including helmets, vehicles, field equipment, and even structures continue to be painted in this vibrant jungle pattern. #camouflage #camo #camopedia #uniform #collection #bangladesh🇧🇩 #bangladeshi #bangladesharmy #junglecamo #bangladeshiarmy

With the merging of several formerly divided Armed Forces and Armies of Cambodia into the new Royal Cambodian Armed Forces in 1993, and following the collapse and large-scale surrender of the Khmer Rouge, the RCAF began looking to international deployments as a way of demonstrating their newfound relative stability and obtaining military experience for their reformed military. One of the first new camouflage patterns adopted for the RCAF was a basic DPM copy, colorwise very reminiscent of the Filipino military's variant, often produced on lightweight, ripstop materials and sewn into copies of the US Tropical Combat Uniform, better known as the "jungle fatigues". These DPM jungle uniforms saw heavy service among deploying RCAF UN Peacekeeping personnel throughout the 1990's and 2000's, continuing well into the late 2000's even after the regular RCAF forces adopted a woodland copy sometime in the late 90's and have continued to issue it since. The DPM pattern also saw use within Cambodia, particularly during internal struggles such as the 1997 Coup. A very special thanks to @_sq_archives_ for many of these photos which helped reveal the extent to which these DPM uniforms saw service! #camouflage #camo #camopedia #uniform #collection #cambodia🇰🇭 #cambodia #cambodian #dpm #dpmcamouflage #jungle #junglefatigue #junglefatiguejacket #tropicalcombatuniform #junglejacket #royalcambodianarmy #cambodianarmy #peacekeepingmission

During one of our winter walks, we accidentally noticed some intriguing parallels between the British Multicam - MTP and the Bulgarian digital desert camouflage M18. If you've seen our Winter Mega Test, chances are you've also discovered some resemblances in the performance of these two very different patterns. That’s why we present our comparison between MTP and M18, conducted in the early days of March. We tested in various environments: from dry grasslands to mixed forests, terrains with both oak and pine foliage. Looking back at the captured images, we can only confirm the similar results between the two patterns. It's not difficult to guess that the Bulgarian M18 draws inspiration from the Tropentarn. However, deviations extend beyond mere digitization of the pattern. Primarily, the base tone exhibits a slightly deeper hue, and one can see a difference in the ratio of green and brown. To show this better we will release a quick comparison between Tropentarn and BG M18 in stories and in highlights. Surprisingly, Bulgaria has one micro desert spanning roughly 200 hectares and it also has beach and river dunes. While the representativeness of these environments remains uncertain, we plan to test M18's efficacy on such sandy terrains in the upcoming months. We anticipate your insights and thoughts regarding the MTP versus M18 deliberation. #bulgariancamo #bulgariandesert #desertcamo #bulgarianarmy #digitalflecktarn #digitalcamo #bulgarianuniform #mtp #britishcamo #mtpcamo #multicam #uscamo #multicampattern #multicamo #мультикам #мультикамформа #britisharmy #usarmy #militarycamo #flecktarn #tropentarn #aridcamo #wintercamo #camotest #camopattern #camopedia #camouflage #flecktarncamo #bulgarianuniform #camo

🇩🇰 Selling for 85$ is the Danish “M/84 Pletsløring Kampjakke” for “Model 84 Spot Blur Combat Jacket”, better known as the “M/84 Jacket”. Inspired by the famous German Flecktarn, it was first presented as the T/78 trial pattern in 1978 which was never adopted but evolved into the modernized M/84 pattern in 1984 to match a better colouration of the Danish woodland environment. Produced by the German company Marquardt & Schulz, it was part of the “M/84 Kampuniform” (Combat Uniform) which also adopted the same name for the full combat uniform and equipment system. Sadly demilitarized in 2011 and replaced by the “M/11” Multciam version uniform, it’s still used in basic training and by some units of the Danish Home Guard. Cool specs are its diagonal zipped chest pockets, inner poncho storage pouch, 100% cotton liner, unique camo and resistant shell textile. The M/84 Kampuniform saw action in the Bosnian War, Iraq, Afghanistan and Ukraine. A fairly unique desert pattern and uniform out of the Republic of Chad, this pattern and uniform cut was adopted sometime in the 2000's, certainly by 2008, and fell out of service sometime in the 2010's. Likely made in China, this uniform cut (produced in this desert pattern and also in a more typical woodland pattern, see the last photo) has very unique features, including a Mandarin collar, button front, cuffs, and epaulets, four button pockets, BDU-cut trousers, and curious diamond-stitched reinforcement panels on the shoulders, elbows, knees, and rear of the trousers. They came with a full tricolor "T'Chad" flag patch on the left sleeve, and the left chest is embroidered with "ANT" (Armée nationale tchadienne). These uniforms notably saw action in 2008 during the Battle of N'Djamena during the Chadian Civil War, amongst the hodgepodge mix of other uniforms and equipment the Chadian military is known for. I acquired this uniform almost 10 years ago, and it was listed with a matching patrol cap that another bidder won, though photos show that other than berets, Chadian soldiers largely prefer to wear a tagelmust/cheche (turban and veil) to combat the harsh African sun and dusty winds. This uniform and its woodland variant seem to have fallen out of issue by the early-mid 2010's as the ANT began looking more towards thinner, ripstop uniforms with more modern pocket and insignia layouts, as this uniform is surprisingly quite thick. That said, given that the ANT still wears a mass mix of uniforms, it wouldn't be surprising if scant examples of either desert or woodland variants of this uniform continued to be sporadically worn well into the late 2010's or even 2020's. The Chinese production and influence is further evident in that there was also a 2006 Chinese 1 Yuan coin in one of the coat pockets. #camouflage #camo #camopedia #uniform #collection #chad #chadian #tchad #tchadien #tchadienne #arméenationaletchadienne #chadianarmy #chadcivilwar #chadiancivilwar #desert #desertcamo #desertcamouflage #toyota #toyotawar #tchad🇹🇩

One of the most striking African patterns of the Cold War is this "leopard" camo, issued to various units of the Zairean Armed Forces (Forces Armées Zaïroises-FAZ) In 1971 military dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, the "Leopard of the Congo" seized power of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and renamed it to Zaire, placing a heavy emphasis on its armed forces, and invited numerous nations to arm and train the FAZ including the US, France, Belgium, Cuba, Morocco, and North Korea. Sometime between 1974-76, this unique leopard pattern began being issued to numerous units of the FAZ, including the "elite" Kamanyola Infantry Division, Commando units, the Division Spéciale Présidentielle (Special Presidential Brigade, later Division), 31e Brigade Parachutiste and other airborne units, the Zaire Civil Guard, and others. Despite its impressive appearance, the FAZ was largely a paper leopard; in 1977 and 1978, the Shaba I and II conflicts broke out as rebelling forces fought against the totalitarian Mobutu and his greedy, lavish lifestyle which often led his own FAZ to go unpaid, leading to mass desertion and protest. The French, Belgian, and Moroccan armies were called in to assist the FAZ in the Shaba Conflicts, but the unchanging Mobutu led Zaire and the FAZ to only continually grow impoverished and inpatient. By the 1990's mass FAZ desertion and riots broke out after periods of non-pay and a crumbling economy. In 1996 the First Congo War broke out, and by 1997 Zaire completely collapsed, with Mobutu dying shortly after fleeing in exile to Morocco, and the leopard pattern died with the FAZ. The leopard camo, a reflection of Mobutu's obsession and self-association with the jungle predator, is the most memorable icon of the FAZ, much of whose unit insignias and even uniform buttons featured it. Items produced in the pattern include a field cap, shirt, trousers, bush hat, and curious female dress uniform, with base colors varying from green to more tan/khaki as seen on this shirt. Very special thanks to Mr. Hotokezaka/ @fr_slope for this beautiful uniform! #camo #camouflage #camopedia #uniform #collection #zaire #congo #mobutu #shaba #leopardcamo #congolese #coldwar #africa

Enjoying some shapes. Items from my vault printed in ‘Desert DPM’. Originally designed as a four-color pattern it was changed to a two-color design to avoid confusion during the first gulf war. It got licensed previously to Irak therefore it was unusable for the British army. Multiple fabric versions are to be seen on the photos including the Aertex ‘teabag’ and, what I would depict as ‘goosebump’ fabric. 🍃🍁🪖🍂🌿. #camouflage #camouflagefabric #camouflageclothing #camouflagepattern #camopedia #camouflagecollection #armycollection #armyclothes #dpm #desertdpm #hiddenamongtheleaves

After the end of the Rhodesian Bush War/Second Chimurenga the new Zimbabwean National Army began to distance their image from the former Rhodesian forces. A major item was the uniforms; the Rhodesian brushstroke camouflage uniforms had become a symbol of oppression to many ZANLA and ZIPRA veterans, and a hunt for a new, unique camouflage pattern was on. Ironically, the pattern they landed on was yet another old, albeit almost entirely unknown Rhodesian police pattern from the late 1960's. As early as 1968, select units of the British South African Police such as the PSU "Black Boots" and PATU began sporadically wearing a vertical lizard type pattern, possibly only on a trials basis, during field operations until around 1972. For unknown reasons, the BSAP abandoned this pattern, and it was shelved until it was discovered by ZDF officials in the early 80's who revived it as the new standard camouflage pattern of the ZNA, although now they had also introduced "wet" and "dry" season variations whereas the original BSAP pattern appears to have only existed in a "wet season" type. Colloquially nicknamed "Monkey Hand", this vertical lizard pattern once again ironically was almost entirely produced on ex-Rhodesian cut uniforms and equipment, including a flap cap, bush hat, bush jacket, Statesman and Paramount cut shirts like my heavily torn and repaired example seen here, battledress style trousers, and copies of the old Rhodesian "Fireforce" vests and chest rigs. 'Monkey Hand' was worn from at least 1984 until the mid 90's, when it was controversially "economically" abandoned for being inferior quality to the old Rhodesian uniforms which were to again be reissued, though puzzlingly the Zimbabwean government lied about simply reissuing old RSF uniforms again and instead had began producing their own new, slightly altered copies of the pattern on newly made uniforms. The BSAP/Monkey Hand pattern was also copied in South Africa; the Republic of Transkei, which held many Rhodesian veterans, issued a tweaked shape and altered color variant of the pattern to their TDF. We've promised a comparison of Austria's latest camouflage - Tarnanzug Neu, and Ukraine's MM14. For the comparison we chose a mountainous landscape reaching approximately 700 meters above sea level. On this diverse winter terrain one can see meadows, rugged rock formations and sprawling oak and evergreen forests, offering a comprehensive testing environment. We took the photos in early February. Our findings unveil intriguing similarities between the two camouflage designs. Notably, both excel in rocky terrains, though the Austrian Tarnanzug Neu exhibits a slight advantage in this regard. When observed in lower grass fields, the MM14 demonstrates a noticeably better performance. Transitioning to higher altitudes, both give a very pleasing performance, yet Ukraine's MM14 emerges as the frontrunner. Further observations reveal nuanced compatibility with specific foliage types: the Austrian camouflage blends a bit better with dark evergreen trees, while its Ukrainian counterpart is better within oak forests. Despite being designed for steppe landscapes, the MM14 impresses with its adaptability across varied terrains. Nevertheless, during our summer trials, the Austrian Tarnanzug Neu surprised us with its effectiveness inside dense oak forests - you should check that test. What are your thoughts of the comparison? P.S.: Expect a two part desert comparison on Friday and Sunday :) #tarnanzug #tarnanzugneu #austriancamo #austria #österreich #bundesheer #ukrainiancamo #mm14 #ukrainianarmy #армія #ukrainiancamouflage #ukrainianarmedforces #digitalcamo #pixelated #pixelcamo #ucp #multicam #flecktarn #camogang #camotest #camopattern #camopedia #camouflage #camo #woodland #animalwatcher #bushcraft #outdoorphotography
