On this day 24 years ago, John Larmour was shot dead in the family ice cream shop, Barnams, on the Lisburn Road in Belfast city. John's brother George was meant to be on ice cream duty that evening but asked John to stand in for him. George subsequently wrote a book on John's murder - "They Killed the Ice Cream Man" (Barnes and Noble). Sarah Longley was 13 years of age at the time. She could name the 21 flavours in the shop by heart. Her father Michael is one of the key creative voices in Ireland. He wrote a poem in homage to John. The poem is called "The Ice Cream Man". 21 Burren wild flowers are named in the poem. It is a searingly beautiful piece. 24 years ago today. 11th October 1998. Burren National Park - Mullaghmore Right in the inland hills of the Burren is the area of the Burren National Park, one of six in Ireland. Here you find a set of different walks, all beautiful, this time I chose the Mullaghmore Loop, a 3 hour walk up to the top of the magical 180 m high hill. The height is obviously not what makes this walk special, it is the walk over the Burren Karst, the limestone rock once the floor of the sea which is visibly in the many fossils within the rock. A landscape full of colourful flowers, hazel trees and vanishing lakes. Every time I am taking this route it is such a treat to have that view across the amazing otherworldly landscape of the Burren. The Burren, part 3 - the flora 🙈🙈🙈🙈 1. Harebell - Méaracán gorm in Irish (translates into 'blue thimble'), also called Méaracán púca 'goblin's thimble'. In Scotland, this plant is known as 'Bluebell.'🧝🏽♀️ 2. Hazel nut (or cob nut) - potentially Ireland’s most productive and sustainable source of protein. The Hazel tree was known as the tree of knowledge in ancient Ireland, there salmon of knowledge obtained it's knowledge by eating nuts from a Hazel tree. 🌰 3. This one has me stumped 🤔😳 4. + 5. Mountain Avens - an artic Alpine species usually found in the far north in tundra or in high mountain ranges. Mainly found in the Burren and parts of Sligo here in Ireland 🌼 6. Yellow Agrimony - has a lovely mild scent. Was used by the ancient Greeks to treat eye conditions, has also been used in Chinese medicine to eliminate tape worm. 7. Common Centaury - this pretty flower is quite variable and can grow between 5 and 50 cm. Its flowers only open in full sunshine. 17th century apothecary and herbalist Nicholas Culpeper reported of that 'The whole plant is of an exceeding bitter taste' and that it helped to cure 'the dropsy', a condition which is nowadays regarded as edema. 8. Carline Thistle - a true Burren gem and a native biennial, locally frequent in a diagonal band from Sligo to wexford. 9. + 10. Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula) from a recent trip to the Burren 💜 One of the first orchids to bloom, I saw many of these just about to pop open ✨ . . Found this beauty on a mixture of limestone pavement and grasslands on the hike to Mullaghmore Top. They can be found in a white form, but these are more rare and didn’t see any on the route. These orchids aren’t uncommon, but can be found in both dry and wet habitats.
