Written from some prompts by @writermyf from the work of Mahmoud Darwish, regarded as Palestine’s national poet. The prompt I chose was, ”For you the twins: poetry and prose unite/as you fly from one epoch to another, safe and sound..” (Inanna’s milk) That choice was easy, because I’d enjoyed seeing the crescent Moon floating through Gemini earlier in the week, plus two other random things turning up which spoke of twins or Gemini (weird coincidences like this seem to follow me haha). There was a lot of input from the final prompt too, which was, “Write about a time you experienced a sense of exile. This can be exile from your self, exile from a place you had to leave or a person you had to leave.” These two prompts kind of naturally fell together for me. Tried to form some amalgam of poetry and prose, with elements of symmetry that might reflect or echo the prompt. Also some photos of yesterday’s gathering at my university, calling for a severing of ties with companies which make weapons. The protests focus on Boeing, but there are a number of others (Lockheed Martin, Thales,…). I have been around the tertiary sector for a long time. Universities have changed a lot over the years, but the ideals of light, liberty and learning are in my view still very there. And as such I have always had a difficult time with weapons manufacturers having anything to do with universities. There is a fundamental difference. Experimental - what if you place each character of a poem based upon mathematics? Sure - why not! I chose some smooth sine functions. A bit of the code’s near the end - not difficult but still with ample opportunity for goofs. The final slide is an example of one of my goofs! Learnt of something called kerning, which is like squishing letters a bit closer if they’re thin so the text looks better. The backbone of night, inspired by Carl Sagan’s original Cosmos episode of the same name. Quote… “The !Kung bushmen of the Kalahari desert, in the Republic of Botswana, have an explanation of the Milky Way. At their latitude, it’s often overhead. They call it, ‘the backbone of night.’ They believe it holds the sky up. They believe that, if not for the Milky Way, pieces of sky would come crashing down at our feet. So the Milky Way, in their view, has some practical value - the backbone of night.” Since the Cosmos series was made, the !Kung, like other indigenous people of the Kalahari (the San, Gwi, Tsila, Gana and Bakgalagadi), as well as so many others across the planet, have suffered mightily at the hands of their successive governments. It’s the same, sickening story of cultures, sustained for tens of thousands of years, being forcibly removed from their land, and every effort being made to prevent their return. Because governments want the land and the power and the diamonds and the minerals and the money and the gold and the progress. Because it’s all progress, isn’t it? Yes, progress... So the title refers, in part, to the fall of indigenous cultures, languages, traditions and civilisations across this tiny speck of a world. I’ve been looking at poetry competitions lately, and in particular what past winners have submitted and I have to say I’m not impressed. It’s not the quality of the work - some of it is clever - but you really seem to have to, well, ‘cater’ to your audience. So going with some skypoetry today. I’m the kinda guy who’s very difficult to stress. However, a work colleague remarked yesterday, “I’ve never seen you so stressed. I don’t like it when you’re like this - I want ‘chill you’ back.” And if I peel the skin I do indeed see a whole bunch of springs looking super stretched right now.
