Hi everyone! My name is Ada, also known as The PNW Black Chick - Seattle/PNWer native.😘💜 I've struggled with maintaining a healthy balance in my mental health. Between experiencing life's transitions, the highs and lows, and everywhere in between, the lows started to become too much to battle alone. Being my aging mom's primary caregiver until her recent passing, struggling in relationships, and managing a career at a high profile company all during a pandemic became a real-life "dis' tew murch!" meme, lol. Jokes aside, things were HELLA (PNWer, irl!) hard for me! I was privileged to have resources like medical insurance through my employer to get the medical help I needed. This is a gift and a blessing many Americans are not afforded, and I recognize that privilege. Beyond medical treatment, I had what I consider to be three critical resources: 🫂 1) SUPPORT. I have a loving and active network of family/friends who leaned in to help me get back on track. ☮️ 2) FOUNDATION. Having faith-based grounding (higher power) reminded me of God's grace and mercy towards me and to extend the same to myself and others. 🍋 3) THINKING. I developed a deep, almost maniacal, curiousity of what could be for me if I placed more focus on what I could control and less on what I couldn't. I, as well as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, want to remind eveeyone that May is Mental Health Awareness Month! When thinking about how good the coffee is, I had a fond memory of my mother. Her tolerance for drinks was super low. I don’t even know how to begin this post other than to say that my dear friend Reagan Jackson @rejjarts personifies what it means to be the utmost, supportive Sister-Friend! Today, I was searching her name in my email inbox to make sure that I had all the info in my brain to show up on time and at the right place for her book release celebration next week when I noticed that she had been featured in the @southseattleemerald new series, Meet Our Rainmakers, last month. They did a beautiful job of describing my friend in the many and varied parts of her being and her brilliance and her commitment to our community. As I was reading through her spotlight I noticed a familiar name was mentioned….MINE! AND she mentioned me in the same breath as the incomparable Lola Peters!!! I am honored and I can’t express enough how grateful I am to have Reagan pour into me, invest in me, include me, reach back for me, encourage me and show me so much love. She is among the group of Black women in my life that truly makes me feel cared for and supported to a degree that I cannot express in words. My only hope is that they all feel that I show up for them in the same or equivalent ways. I love you all my Sister-Friends. What would my life be like without you? I do not want to know that life! Meet Ashley McGirt, MSW, LICSW, founder and CEO of the Therapy Fund Foundation, psychotherapist, Tedx international speaker, and author. Ashley's work has been featured in Forbes, MSNBC, HuffPost, and more. She currently serves as the NAACP state area conference health chair. Ashley received her Masters of Social Work from the University of Washington, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She owns and operates her own private practice, where she focuses on racial trauma, depression, and anxiety. Ashley is the founder of the Therapy Fund Foundation @therapyfundfoundation and is actively working towards de-stigmatizing mental illness and reducing high rates of recidivism in American prisons to create a more socially just society for all. She offers presentations, workshops, group facilitation, and consultation specializing in racial trauma, mental health, crisis response, social justice, and racial equity. Ashley strives to help others find happiness and healing within themselves through unpacking their baggage, resting, reflecting, and restoring themselves to be who they were intended to be on this earth. #TheDayWithTrae - Meet Chukundi Salisbury who is leading a self-described “Life of Service”, Chukundi grew up in the Central Area of Seattle, WA and participated in several programs at Miller Community Center and other organizations. He has a lifelong commitment to service as a volunteer, board member, employee, manager, small business owner, and participant. He is the founder of Service is a Lifestyle, a 501©3 Non-Profit that has launched several community initiatives such as 100 Black Parents, URBVOTE (the Urban Vote Initiative), the “This House is Not for Sale Campaign” and the Black Legacy Homeowners Network (BLHO). As the Executive Director of the BLHO he has emerged as a leader around Black Homeowner Stabilization. As a community volunteer he has served in many roles and boards, including Earthlab, Real Change Newspaper, YMCA Camping Services, Mothers for Police Accountability, Southeast Youth and Family Services, The African American Advisory to the Seattle Police Department, and the Central District Community Preservation & Development Authority (CDCPDA). He currently serves as the Immediate past President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Epsilon Epsilon Sigma Chapter in Seattle. In 2021 he launched the “Health is the Real Bag” campaign to focus on wellness after losing over 70lbs and reversing his Type II Diabetes. After having Diabetes for over 10 years, he made a commitment to changing his life after turning 50. After gaining success for himself, he is now on a mission to educate others on how they can also walk away from diabetes. #TheDayWithTrae - Meet Chelsey Richardson - a mother, teacher, and poet whose writing is the electrical current that flows between words and the spiritual world. Her work is grounded in the notion that her role as an artist is to tell the bittersweet truth. Chelsey's writing has been praised by The CD Forum for Arts and Ideas, who said that "Her writing requires you to think critically and examine the world in which we live." She has been awarded the role of "Master Poet" by The Center for Washington Cultural Traditions, Speakers Bureau in 2019-2020. Chelsey recently released her debut poetry book, "All Water has Perfect Memory," in 2021. Her work has been featured in Poetry on the Bus, The South Seattle Emerald, Natasha Marin's Black Powerful, and The Carter Center Forum on Human Rights in Atlanta. With a BA in Creative Writing from the University of Washington and a Master's in Teaching English Education, Chelsey is a writer that truly represents independent poetic expression. Her cleverness and creativity in her prose draw the reader or listener in and leave a lasting impact.
