I made this little film back in 2017. I showed it in Constanta (Romania) and Freilassing (Germany) when I was on sabbatical there in 2017. I entered it in some ultra small festivals in Europe and here. It garnered a little bit of attention from some ultra-small legit festivals and some nefarious ones. En los rodajes de todos mis cortos y largometrajes, tanto en formato de 35 mm como posteriormente en digital, siempre he rodado personalmente alguna secuencia. Aparte del guion y la dirección, la cámara (la fotografía) ha sido mi pasión desde que comencé haciendo cine en Súper 8 mm. He tenido el privilegio de contar en todas mis películas (largos y cortos) con grandes directores de fotografía, como Gerardo (Jerry) Moschioni, Carlos Suárez o Tote Trenas, entre otros. Y con maestros de ese gran nivel se aprende mucho. En mis largometrajes de la última década, además de mis funciones habituales, he asumido la tarea de dirección de fotografía / operador, compartida obviamente junto a otro profesional, teniendo en cuenta que en estas películas intervengo también como actor. La foto corresponde al rodaje de "El juego de los mensajes invisibles" (1992), no pude resistirme entonces a filmar unos cuantos planos. A captivating film still from the exceptional and loosely autobiographical 1975 Soviet drama masterpiece ‘Зеркало’ (‘Mirror’), directed and written by the renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (4 April 1932 – 29 December 1986). This particular shot pays visual homage to the painting ‘Jagers in de sneeuw’ (‘The Hunters in the Snow’) by the Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel de Oude (Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c. 1525–1530 – 9 September 1569), as depicted in the second image. Bruegel's work left a profound impact on Tarkovsky, influencing his artistic vision significantly. Rather than a mere genre art portrayal of a group of hunters returning home after an unsuccessful expedition with their dogs (they only bring home a fox), to me, Bruegel's painting evokes a profound sense of winter's starkness, subtly hinting at the quiet despair lurking beneath the surface of seemingly tranquil scenes. So, in my opinion, in Tarkovsky's film with its nonlinear narrative, this scene serves as a powerful metaphor for the passage of time, the cyclical nature of life, and the intricate relationship between humanity and the natural world. Algo me hace pensar que las nuevas generaciones de cineastas que no han conocido la película en celuloide de 35 mm, no pueden amar el cine con la misma pasión e intensidad que los que hemos tenido el privilegio de rodar en ese formato. El propio hecho de poder tocar, sentir, oler y ver a contraluz la película ya filmada en tus propias manos, te producía una sensación y un placer inexplicables. Director : Nobuhiko Obayashi Cinematographer : Yoshitaka Sakamoto House (1977) is an absurd Japanese artwork in motion. It is directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi who is considered one of the pioneers in Japanese experimental art cinema. House is considered one of his genius works which has gained a cult following over the years. The film exhibits the quirks, outlandish humour in bizarre situations through intentionally bad editing, and animation. Obayashi uses pop art collage like stop motion editing especially in the scenes where the characters confront and experience the horror in the haunted house, which creates a sense of adventurous fantasy ride than utter panic for the audience. In the film, a group of seven Japanese schoolgirls who are named according to their attributes, takes a trip to the protagonist’s (Gorgeous) old aunt’s mansion in the countryside village. Gorgeous is furious from her father who brought a new wife to take place of her deceased mother. Hence, she wanders off to her aunt. Gorgeoud has not seen her in years. The aunt’s backstory is rather tragic which revolves around her everlasting wait for her fighter pilot fiancée (he never returned from the war). Thus, her aunt remained unmarried and spent rest of the years alone in the creaky mansion on top of the hill. Although her sinister motives are gradually revealed as the plot unfolds. The film’s avant-garde surrealism style blends well with the commercial horror-slasher popcorn genre. Here, Obayashi contradicts the predictability of the ‘Final girl’.
