I just sit. Or I walk and walk. Or I stand somewhere looking at one spot. And it seems to me as I stand here that I am totally disconnected from the rest of the world around me. Nothing, absolutely nothing connects me with it. The world around me goes on being busy, conducts its wars, enslaves countries, kills people, tortures. The real world... My life till now seems to have slipped through this real world without participating in it, without caring about it, without any connection to it. Even when I was in the very middle of it, I wasn’t really there. My only life connection is in these scribbles. Here I stand, this moment, now, with my arms hanging down, the shoulders fallen, eyes on the floor, beginning my life from point zero. I don’t want to connect myself to this world. Embracing his new home in Williamsburg, Mekas became a pivotal figure in the Fluxus movement. Armed with his first Bolex camera in 1949, Mekas quickly became a luminary in American avant-garde cinema. His ventures included founding “Film Culture” in 1954, starting “Movie Journal” in “The Village Voice” in 1958, and establishing the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Cinematheque in the 1960s, birthing the Anthology Film Archives. SECOND IDYLL How Spring Smells Warming breezes the first soft showers now gust in will start the bark to swell on alder stems, already flashing their mild green on all the bushes. Up around new-sprung streams, the black gullies foaming chill run-off thaw, in wet underbrush alongside ditches and by pools of standing water, willows soon have their catkins show pale, faintly yellow. The air has a dank, lingering smell of frost and raw wind, though gullies soon run down, drowning pastures recover, and along ditches and streams, as in damp ground around barns, marsh-marigolds start to crop up in frail yellow clusters. Soon the yard fills with smells from new shoots, boards stacked outdoors to dry, fading frost, scraggly potato patches, and the first sprouts of new grass. Now the slightest shift in the air brings on alder and juniper, over from the bushes, with young buds, new leaves, catkins, a smell of open water from across the fields, bank swallows, coltsfoot, milkweed, steaming meadows, drying puddles, caking mud, and snow — the last of it now — down to grime in a loamy ditch. After ten years of shows, screenings, and books made together with @jonasmekasofficial and @sebastian.mekas, it was beautiful to celebrate our friendship by returning to Venice, where everything began with the exhibition The Internet Saga at Palazzo Foscari Contarini in 2015. Jonas's cinema is simultaneously an art of reality and the expression of the reality of art. For this reason, we decided to present his latest film, Requiem, in another one of those locations that he called "normal people places": the @societadantealighieri (Comitato di Venezia), the only school in the city where foreigners can obtain the linguistic diploma to apply for Italian citizenship. Requiem at the Società Dante is a film that becomes an environment: a world that opens up at the end of Venice, on the borders of the Anthropocene. Requiem is not a The End, however. It is a To Be Continued, or better, a Life Goes On! Presenting Requiem in Venice would not have been possible without the trust of @sebastian.mekas, who is doing important work on his father's archive: we hope he can find more and more friends and supporters.
