The fourth—and final— #AANHPI highlight for May: Inro #AtTheMuseums! Inro, or multi-layered containers, were used by Japanese men to carry personal items such as medicine, tobacco, calligraphy seals, and other small objects. They hung the inro case on the sash (obi) of their kimono as a form of decoration. Inro were commonly made of lacquered wood and were decoratively carved or inlaid with mother of pearl. The detail of the decoration and the material used often reflected the status of the wearer. Netsuke, intricately carved toggles, were attached to the inro and served as a counterweight when tucked over the sash of the kimono. An ojime bead also decorated the cord and was slid down toward the inro to keep the container tightly closed, and the contents dry in Japan’s humid climate. Find inro and netsuke on display in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum. #AsianAmericanNativeHawaiianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth #SmithsonianAANHPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #APAHM #SpringfieldMuseums @smithsonian @smithsonianaffiliates

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, Kenneth Chin, assistant vice president in Cash Services, shares how he honors his heritage and traditions. “AANHPI Heritage Month, for me, brings me back to my childhood where my parents exposed me to elements of my Chinese heritage such as tradition, culture, food, celebration, etc., and as a result, I’ve tried to share what I remember with my children.” “One of my favorite cultural traditions centers around the Chinese New Year celebration. I have vivid memories of the lion and dragon dances, kung fu and dance demonstrations, firecrackers, food, and — of course — the red envelopes!” #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #aanhpiheritagemonth #aanhpi

Third in our #AANHPI highlights for May: the Japanese Tea Ceremony #AtTheMuseums! Tea was introduced into Japan from China as early as the ninth century and became a popular beverage by the 14th century. The tea ceremony is based on the beliefs of Zen Buddhism and is used as a means of focusing the mind, body, and spirit. The ceremony involves the preparation and serving of powdered green tea by a tea master to invited guests. While the ceremony is essentially the preparation of a simple cup of tea, it embodies the essence of traditional Japanese arts. The tea ceremony often takes place in a rustic teahouse set within a beautiful landscape. A full-length formal tea ceremony is comprised of a meal (chakaiseki) and two servings of tea (koicha and usucha), covering approximately four hours. During the ceremony, the host creates a sense of aesthetic, intellectual, and physical enjoyment as well as peace of mind for the guests. To achieve this, the tea host or hostess may spend decades mastering the measured procedures for serving tea. Learn more about tea practices in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum. #AsianAmericanNativeHawaiianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth #SmithsonianAANHPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #APAHM #SpringfieldMuseums @smithsonian @smithsonianaffiliates

For Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, Lincy Chacko, quantitative supervision manager, reflects on representation in AANHPI communities and shares her favorite cultural traditions. “It's great to see Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders represented more broadly in the media, business, the arts, and mainstream culture. Growing up, this was much less common, as was the understanding of the customs and traditions of these cultures. I appreciate the awareness that AANHPI Heritage Month fosters.” “My family is from the southern part of India, from a Christian community in the state of Kerala. India is a country with a wide diversity of languages, religions, and customs. Cultural traditions vary accordingly, but a common theme that's woven throughout these traditions is food and family. Holidays and celebrations are community-based — celebrated with lots of family, friends, and good food. That's my favorite part of Indian cultural traditions.” #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #aanhpiheritagemonth #aanhpi

Hamana Kalili II is my 2nd great granduncle. He was a fisherman who lived in Laie, Oahu, Hawaii from 1882, when he was born, until his death in 1958. At some point before 1917, Hamana lost his three middle fingers on his right hand, in a fishing accident. He is known outside of Laie today because of the way people imitated what became his familiar wave, which consisted of the thumb and little finger extended and the three middle fingers folded down (or, in his case, missing). People today call this wave the ‘shaka’ sign, a common sign of friendship from Hawai‘i. His statue stands at the front of the @polynesianculturalctr in Laie, Hawaii. Continuing our AANHPI Mighty Mentor Spotlight, we have @grace_lee_boggs! Grace Lee Boggs, a philosopher, activist, and writer, dedicated her life to advancing social change and empowering communities. Born in Rhode Island to Chinese immigrant parents, Grace's journey towards activism was shaped by her experiences of racism and inequality, which fueled her commitment to justice and transformation. Grace's activism spanned decades and encompassed a wide range of issues, from civil rights and labor rights to environmental justice and feminism. She played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, working alongside leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and advocating for racial equality and economic justice. One of Grace's most significant contributions was her emphasis on grassroots organizing and community empowerment. She believed in the power of ordinary people to effect meaningful change in their communities and encouraged collective action and self-determination. Grace's work in Detroit, where she lived for much of her life, focused on building sustainable, equitable communities through initiatives like urban gardening and neighborhood revitalization projects. Grace's philosophy of "revolutionary love" emphasized the importance of love, compassion, and empathy in the struggle for justice. She believed that transformative change required not only political activism but also a fundamental shift in consciousness towards interconnectedness and solidarity. #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #asianamerican #asianamericanactivist #socialactivist #learnbetterdobetter #mightykind #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #chineseamerican #lifelonglearners #livingthatabarlife #abar #antibiasantiracist #abareducation #civilrightsactivist #reparations #kindnessisadvocacy #bemightykind #grassrootsactivism #getinvolved #grassrootsorganizing #revolutionarylove #graceleeboggs #civilrights

This month is #AsianAmericanNativeHawaiianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth, and we are commemorating the barrier-breaking stories of those who have contributed to aviation history. Dr. Kalpana Chawla had been fascinated by flight since childhood - mainly due to her visits to local flying clubs. She had a dream to fly, and she achieved it! Chawla was born in India and earned her aeronautical engineering degree from Panjab Engineering College, followed by a master's and PhD from the University of Texas-Arlington and the University of Colorado-Boulder, respectively. She was a pilot of gliders and single- and multi-engine planes. In 1988 Kalpana joined the team at NASA's Ames Research Center and specialized in powered-lift computational fluid dynamics. In 1991, Chawla became a US citizen, and in 1994 NASA selected her for astronaut training in the 15th group of Astronauts. In 1997 Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian woman and first South Asian American woman to fly in space aboard Columbia as part of STS-87. She and the crew made 252 orbits around Earth over 376 hours and 34 minutes. Kalpana flew aboard Columbia again with STS-107 and conducted microgravity experiments. Tragically, Chawla and the other crewmembers perished upon Columbia's re-entry on February 1, 2003. Kalpana Chawla was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Space Flight Medal, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. 📸: NASA/Cesar Acosta. Kalpana Chawla in Oct. 1995 when she was an astronaut candidate working at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California. Image Description: Color photo of Kalpana Chawla. She is smiling, with her head and body facing slightly to her right. She’s wearing a patterned sweater with blue, red, and green over a red shirt. Her hair is black and slightly longer than shoulder-length. She is holding some papers in her hand, and behind her to her right is a computer with the screen showing a 3-D model. Text at the top of the computer screen reads “Delta wing with thrust-reverser jets in descent”. The text beneath is illegible.

🌺Library Display: Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month🌺 May is always one of my favorite months to do a heritage display. It makes me super happy to see how many excellent books our library has that feature folks who identify as AANHPI. Why I love making displays at work: A family had just finished checking out and was about to leave when their young son noticed my main display and excitedly grabbed a book and told his parents he HAD to check it out too. They said, but you just got a bunch of books. He said, "But it's about Asians! It's about people like me!" He had grabbed a book about Asian American history for kids that was front and center on my AANPHI display. I am so so glad that kids today have the opportunity to see themselves in books (kid me would have loved to have seen Asian American rep growing up) and that I can play a small part in helping them find them. This is why representation matters. #librarydisplay #bookdisplay #bookstagram #AAPIHM #AsianAmerican #NativeHawaiian #PacificIslander #AsianAmericanNativeHawaiianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth #representationmatters #diversereads

We’re celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month to raise awareness about the cultural diversity of the Asia-Pacific region by highlighting members of our Asian-Pacific Heritage Employee Resource Group and its members. As an immigrant, Ryo Tashiro, outreach economist and advisor, calls on us all to take this time to “reflect on the contributions of people from various cultural backgrounds,” and he shares a cultural tradition that is meaningful to him. “All Japanese people are taught to say ‘itadaki-masu’ before every meal and ‘gochisousama-deshita’ after every meal. This roughly translates to ‘I humbly accept this meal’ and ‘Thank you for the meal,’ respectively. I think that’s a good reminder that enjoying a meal can be a privilege.” #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #aanhpi #aanhpi

Second in our #AANHPI highlights for May: Jade Carvings #AtTheMuseums! Jade has been carved by Chinese lapidary from Neolithic times to the present. Referred to as the “Stone of Heaven,” jade is cold to the touch, has a fine ring, can be carved into extremely delicate shapes, and takes an excellent polish. There are distinctly two materials known as jade–nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is a hard stone of the amphibole family which is fibrous in consistency and attains a wax-like surface when polished. Jadeite, a mineral of the pyroxene family, is crystalline in composition and attains a glossy sheen when polished. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting in on a virtual interview with @ai.jian.g (thanks again to @adamsfall and @underbrushbooks) to talk about her recently released Linghun. Let me just say, this story is a sucker punch to the gut. Jiang’s prose is beautiful yet simultaneous devastating at times. I loved Linghun so much I immediately sought out “I am AI”, an older novelette from her. I LOVED it. I really don’t want to give anything anything away so just go read these, they’re both shorter reads and so worthwhile. In honor of #AANHPI Heritage Month, we'll be getting to know a few #MightyMentors from the Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island communities. First up is @helenziareal! Helen Zia, is a Chinese-American activist, journalist, and scholar and has dedicated her life to advocating for civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQIA2S+ rights. From her work in the Asian-American community, where she fought for redress and reparations for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, to her vocal support for LGBTQIA2S+ rights and gender equality, Zia's impact is profound. You can learn more about her work at HelenZia.com. By following Helen's example and taking action, we can honor her legacy and work towards a more just and equitable society. **Who are other #AAHNPI Mighty Mentors we should be following— not just online, but in their footsteps? Please share in the comments!** In the Mighty Kind Magazine Olympics Issue you can read about Fred Korematsu who was another Mighty Mentor activist who resisted the internment of Japanese Americans During World War II. #aapi #aapiheritagemonth #asianamerican #asianamericanactivist #socialactivist #learnbetterdobetter #mightykind #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #chineseamerican #lifelonglearners #getinvolved #livingthatabarlife #abar #antibiasantiracist #abareducation #lgbtqia2s+ #lgbqt #genderequality #civilrightsactivist #gayrights #reparations #kindnessisadvocacy #bemightykind

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Each Wednesday, we’ll offer an AANHPI highlight from our collections #AtTheMuseums. This basket-shaped incense burner, on view in the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, utilizes both cloisonné and champleve techniques. It is lavishly decorated with bat, peach, and floral motifs, all of which symbolize long-life and happiness. On the cover is a tranquil scene of a deer and a crane beside a pond. The deer, one of the most common symbols used in Chinese Art, is believed to live to an old age and signifies longevity. It is said to be the only animal that can find the sacred Ling Chih, the fungus of immortality. Visit our website to learn more about our cloisonné. #AsianAmericanNativeHawaiianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth #SmithsonianAANHPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #APAHM #SpringfieldMuseums @smithsonian @smithsonianaffiliates

::ANNOUNCEMENT:: APAHM Art Auction for Gaza An Instagram Fundraiser May 10-12, 2024 We are a group of artists and art workers who are raising funds for Palestinian photographer, Hani Mortaja and his family in Gaza. The auction will feature original artwork, prints, and goods donated by 14 artists and makers. All the auction proceeds will go towards securing the safe passage of the Mortaja Family to Egypt. —— ABOUT THE MORTAJA FAMILY: Hani Mortaja is a Palestinian photographer whose beloved family has been enduring Israel’s genocidal assault in Gaza the last seven months. Amidst the heartbreaking loss of their ancestral home, surviving various illnesses, the loss of loved ones, and facing the constant threat of death and starvation, the family is desperate to seek refuge in Egypt. With the imminent danger of Israel’s invasion into Rafah, our efforts are urgent and imperative. We are deeply honored to partner with the Mortaja family in raising funds to ensure the safe evacuation of each family member. All proceeds from the art auction will go towards covering evacuation expenses, visa-related legal fees, transportation, and play a vital role in establishing a semblance of security and stability in Egypt during the critical initial months. —— The auction will begin on Friday, May 10th, 7:00am PST/10:00am EST. Participating artists: @aaronchungart @andreleebassuet @chrisyisuh @daveyoungkim @koreangry @hmortaja @unterbahn @joniebroecker @yukieillustrates @mary_laube @migiwaorimo @brooklynstani @sjrue @qrwhzgub **Please help us the word, and continue to follow along for auction guidelines, artist highlights, previews and updates every day this week!** Thank you for your support, solidarity, and humanity<3 #apahmartauctionforgaza #apahm #aanhpi #aapi #artist #asianpacificamericanheritagemonth #asianamericanpacificislanderheritagemonth #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #artistsofinstagram #auction #artauction #mutualaid #fundraiser #art #events #freepalestine #freegaza #artistsagainstapartheid

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month we are offering a national training virtually on Zoom on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10:00 am HST or 4:00 pm EST. You can sign-up for the training and register with the link in bio. While the research available on Asian American communities and epilepsy is limited, according to Epilepsy and Behavior, 140,000 Asian American adults in the United States have epilepsy. This means about 0.6% of Asian Americans have epilepsy. Due to the challenges of collecting data, as well as fear and confusion about having and disclosing an epilepsy diagnosis, the number of Asian Americans with epilepsy could be much higher. Lack of understanding about epilepsy, along with challenges finding affordable, quality care available in Asian and Pacific Island languages, can make it hard for many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders with epilepsy to live full and healthy lives. In addition, some people have negative perceptions about epilepsy, such as the mistaken belief that epilepsy has a spiritual cause or is a mental illness. Talking about epilepsy is often seen as taboo, not something shared outside of the family. Additionally, some providers have inadequate knowledge and lack of training in cultural humility, making it harder to have honest and productive conversations between patients and their healthcare teams. #epilepsyeducation #getseizuresmart #getseizurefirstaidcertified #epilepsyhawaii #epilepsy808 #epilepsyequity #ialohasomeonelivingwithepilepsy💜 #aanhpi #aanhpiheritagemonth #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth

Civil Liberties Act 1988 On 25th January 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed Public Order 100-383, the Civil Liberties Act, which granted reparations of $20,000 and a formal Presidential apology to every surviving member incarcerated in Japanese American Camps during World War Two. The law acknowledged that the decision to intern the 120,000 people was illegal. Pressure from Civil Rights groups and Supreme Court rulings by former incarcerees forced the bull into existence. On October 9th 1990, a ceremony was held to present nine elderly Japanese Americans with the first government cheques. Over the following years, 82,219 received redress. #japaneseamerican #japaneseamericanincarceration #asianamericanmonth #asianamericanmonth🇺🇸 #asianamericannativehawaiianpacificislanderheritagemonth #wwii #wwııhistory #wiihistory #civillibertiesactof1988
