Wishbone Ash's 7th studio album - New England!! Original 1976 copy Released only 7 months after 'Locked In'. It was a success compared to 'Locked In' but still did not chart as high as most of their previous albums. It peaked at No.22 in the UK Albums Chart. This album also marked the "Americanization" of the band, as they relocated from England to the Northeastern US for tax purposes. The album contained an even balance of hard rock songs and breezy, soft rock ballads, the latter of which would see further exploration from Wishbone Ash on their next studio album. Laurie Wisefield lending credibility to the Wishbone Ash brand of sound, which is evident all over this album. "Mother of Pearl" kicks the album off in typical rocking style and immediately the next song brings the predictable ballad like number back with "You Rescued Me". Some excellent guitar work from Powell and Wisefield. The alternation of rock and ballads follow again over the next 4 tracks. The highlight for this album has to be the superb "Lonely Island". One thing Wishbone Ash will never do is bore you with too many great guitar solos. The album closes with the acoustically driven shirt piece "Candlelight". The album is a bit short but certainly not lacking in quality. Wishbone Ash's 1st official/2nd overall live album - Live Dates!! Original 1973 copy The album features 11 tracks, 10 of which originally featured on the band's first 4 albums. The 1 new track was a cover of the Jimmy Reed blues standard "Baby What You Want Me to Do". The tracks were recorded in June 1973 at Croydon Fairfield Halls, Reading University, Newcastle City Hall, and Portsmouth Guildhall., using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. In 2023, the band's other guitarist Andy Powell said, "We had made a name for ourselves as a dynamic live act, so it only made sense to capture the energy and vibrancy of our shows on a live album. Fortunately, the record company funded the costly Rolling Stones Mobile recording truck, so we were able to record several shows during our U.K. tour and compile the most powerful moments on Live Dates." Also in 2023, Wishbone Ash undertook a 50th anniversary tour celebrating the album, and recorded and released Live Dates Live, as a tribute to the original Live Dates. Band founder and original bass guitarist Martin Turner also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the album in 2023, by touring across the UK. He had previously released a double live album New Live Dates in 2016, which also featured Ted Turner. Wishbone Ash's 6th studio album - Locked In!! Original 1976 copy The album peaked at No.36 in the UK Albums Chart in April 1976, their lowest UK chart placing to date. It was also the 1st Wishbone Ash album to feature original tracks not credited to the whole group with 4 of the tracks credited to either 1 or 2 members. Considered by many, including the band themselves, to be one of the weaker entries in their extensive catalog. The band frequently place the blame on producer Tom Dowd, who insisted the band play much quieter in the studio, removing much of the energy of their performances. The band had switched U.S. distribution from MCA Records to Atlantic Records for this and the next release. However, it would be a shame to completely discard this album because despite its sanitized production, it contains some very good songs. Like for example “Rest In Peace” which opens the ball and which, when it takes on its full dimension in concert, could be considered 1 of the best pieces of the Wisefield period. An unstoppable riff which responds to the arpeggios, then this talk box which dialogues with the vocals, and of course tip top solos. The ballad "No Water In The Well" has a bit of an Eagles feel to it. “Moonshine” also sails towards the Californian Rock of this era but in a more lively style. Not unpleasant at all and even downright nice in style. When the ballad “She Was My Best Friend” comes - the piano taking precedence over the crystalline arpeggios which had made the success of their past ballads for a pure Americanization and lasts. On “Trust In You” we find more of the Wishbone Ash that we know. Wishbone Ash's 5th studio album - There's the Rub!! Original 1974 copy It is the 1st album to feature guitarist-vocalist Laurie Wisefield, who would be a major part of the band's creative direction for the next 11 years. It also marked a change in sound. It was the band's 1st album to be recorded in America and was produced by producer Bill Szymczyk. Although the trademark twin guitars were still evident, the album had a more "American" feel with a smoother production sound. Nevertheless, after the disappointing critical response to the previous studio album, Wishbone Four, reviews for There's The Rub were much more positive. The title is taken from Shakespeare's Hamlet; "To sleep—perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub." The track "F.U.B.B." caused controversy upon the album's release because of the acronym's meaning ("Fucked Up Beyond Belief"). Moreover, the haunting ballad "Persephone" would go on to become 1 of the band's most popular live songs. The lyric of "Lady Jay" is based on the Dartmoor folk legend about Kitty Jay. The cover art designed by Hipgnosis shows a cricketer rubbing (in effect, polishing) a cricket ball on his trousers, leaving a mark – a common practice by fast bowlers who do so to make 1 side of the leather ball shinier than the other. This helps the ball to swing as it travels through the air after being bowled, so making it harder for the batsman to play it. Wishbone Ash - There's The Rub // 1974 Arguably the quintessential twin-lead-guitar band of the 70s, There's The Rub was the first record the british band recorded in the US (with some less then stellar results in the coming years). One of their best and certainly my favourite Ash record with six lenghy tracks of pure harmony guitar magic drenched in a very warm sounding production that puts Martin Turner's varied bass guitar playing front and centre. I've read that some dislike the dry drum sound of drummer Steve Upton's kit, but to me it fits the recording perfectly. Highlights include the opening two-punch of Silver Shoes and Don't Come Back, aswell as the more upbeat radio-friendly side B opener Hometown. Persephone and Lady Jay are more dramatic, slower songs but nonetheless great, but the unrivaled king of instrumental bliss is the almost ten-minute closing marathon of F.U.B.B. Building from a hypnotizing bass riff with tastefull but restrained drumming it turns into a full blown twin guitar frenzy in the latter half. My favourite albums are the early ones where they manage to deliver very accessible, highly melodic progressive hard rock with blues and jazz influences at times. They are a great listen and this album features superb dual lead guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner, Martin Birch as the sound engineer and a Storm Thorgerson designed cover - what’s not to love! My copy is an original UK pressing from ‘72 on the MCA label in a really clean matte gatefold sleeve. Spent Friday night with Wishbone Ash at the Sellersville Theater! I had the opportunity to watch their soundcheck & hang out with them before the show. They signed my poster & posed for some pics. Legendary British rock band Wishbone Ash took over Largo, FL this evening. Founded in 1970 by vocalist, guitarist, writer, Andy Powell, this prolific band has released 24 studio and 12 live albums. Second guitarist, Mark Abrahams joined in 2017 and provided a precision harmony and slide pro to the group. This man rocks the “eff” out live! Bassist/vocalist Bob Skeat has held down the rhythm section for 25 years, now with newcomer drummer Mike Truscott. Die Musik von Wishbone Ash habe ich schon immer sehr gemocht 🎶🎸🫶! 🔹️ Der Name Wishbone Ash tauchte zum ersten Mal konkret auf als sie als Vorgruppe von Deep Purple spielten. Im gleichen Jahr erschien ihr Erstling *Wishbone Ash*. Weitere sehr erfolgreiche Alben folgten. Ihr hervorstechendes Merkmal ist ihr Spiel mit zwei gleichberechtigten Leadgitarren. Der "dual lead-guitar sound" wurde von ihnen erfunden. Die Gruppe existiert bis heute in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen. Ihr Musikstil ist unaufgeregter melodiöser Rock. 100 Desert Island Albums - Wishbone Ash "Just Testing" This was a hard one. Not just because it's number 100, but Wishbone Ash is a difficult band. No strong identity, quite diverse in style, several line-up changes, too many singers, but a lot of good songs. 🎸Just back from an absolutely amazing Wishbone Ash gig in Cologne 🎸 We would probably prefer to see our favourite 70’s bands back then, but I think they may sound live even better now!. 🎸 Their relatively new guitarist Mark Abrahams, blew me away for playing the classic solos in what seemed in note for note versions but still with his own character.
