It’s #soundtracksunday ! Moonlighting debuted on ABC March 3, 1985. Thirty Nine YEARS AGO! 😳 I was a huge fan of the show and set my VCR to record every single episode. I no longer own a VCR or any VHS tapes 🤣 but was pleasantly surprised that HULU has all 67 episodes, remastered in high definition, available to stream. It’s been fun revisiting with David Addison and Maddie Hayes! #moonlighting #brucewillis #cybillshepherd #alicebeasley #curtisarmstong #glenngordoncaron #aljarreau #abcnetwork #soundtracks #tvsoundtrack #mcarecords #80stv #eightiestv #breakingthefourthwall #atomicshakespeare #davidaddison #maddiehayes #missdipesto #herbertviola

Common Thread, featuring the work of quilter Alice Beasley, weaver Kira Dominguez Hultgren and embroiderer Michelle Kingdom, curated by Marianne McGrath for Santa Clara University is absolutely gorgeous! Powerful, yet also very intimate, this exhibition tells stories of memory, connection and loss that are both personal and universal, through traditionally female associated mediums. The show is on until February 2 with a Reception and Artist Talk on January 18 at 5 pm. Gallery hours are 9-4, weekdays and will be closed December 22 - Jan 3 for the holidays. I am so grateful to @theartistcollector for the personal tour! She is a wonderful curator and all her exhibitions are so thoughtful and beautiful! . WHEN AND WHERE I ENTER BY FIBER ARTIST ALICE BEASLEY (OAKLAND, CA) “The title of the piece comes from Black feminist scholar Anna Julia Cooper who rebutted the assumption that white women could dictate the place of Black women in the suffragist movement, stating ‘only the Black woman can say when and where I enter, in the quiet, undisputed dignity of my womanhood.’” —Alice Beasley (@alicembeasley) When and Where I Enter is currently featured in the “Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes, Women’s Rights” exhibition on view at the Clinton Presidential Center in Arkansas through December 2023. At the conclusion of the exhibition, When and Where I Enter will come “home” to the Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund permanent collection and traveling exhibition. FEEDING TIME AT THE SWAMP BY FIBER ARTIST ALICE BEASLEY (OAKLAND, CA) Far from “draining the swamp” the Alligator in Chief staffed his cabinet and administration with billionaires, Wall Street insiders, alt-right snakes, Russian cohorts and wealthy campaign contributors, all eager to feed off the rest of us. One of the great things about being an artist is that even if I can’t change the world I still have an unfettered opportunity to express my opinions. To keep from exploding, I made these pieces instead. —Alice Beasley, on “Feeding Time at the Swamp”, “Having Her Say” Series For more information regarding Alice Beasley’s artistic practice, visit alicebeasley.com. Fiber Artwork: Feeding Time at the Swamp by Alice Beasley. 2017. 48 x 60 inches. #AliceBeasley #Oakland #FeedingTimeAtTheSwamp #HavingHerSay

SHE REFUSED TO WALK BEHIND BY FIBER ARTIST ALICE BEASLEY (OAKLAND, CA) To honor the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, I was asked to create works for two different exhibitions. My subject for both exhibits was Black activist, suffragist, journalist, anti-lynching crusader and teacher Ida B. Wells, because I thought her story exemplified the complex, often turbulent relationship between white suffragists and Black women. During the time of Jim Crow, even familiar white heroines such as Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Alice Paul were not above using racist sentiments to court support among white southerners. The two pieces are “”She Refused to Walk Behind” and “When and Where I Enter.” Both call out the moment when Ida B. Wells and her delegation of Black women suffragists from Chicago were told they would not be allowed to march with the other Illinois women in the 1913 suffrage parade in Washington, D.C. They could either walk at the tail end (behind the men) or not at all; a dictate Ms. Wells declined. Instead, she positioned herself on the sidewalk with the cheering crowds and when the Illinois delegation began to pass by, she calmly stepped off the sidewalk and positioned herself among the marching Illinois women. Ida B. Wells essentially threw down the gauntlet, when the suffragist movement turned its back on Black women. —Alice Beasley (@alicembeasley) She Refused to Walk Behind will be on view at an art exhibition at Santa Clara University from November 13, 2023 to February 2, 2024. At the conclusion of the exhibition, She Refused to Walk Behind will come “home” to the Acres of Ancestry Initiative/Black Agrarian Fund permanent collection and traveling exhibition. IN MY WAKE BY FIBER ARTIST ALICE BEASLEY (OAKLAND, CA) “This piece is my personal apology to the ocean. Each piece of detritus shown is a fabric re-creation of some disposable that I found in my house.” —Alice Beasley (@alicembeasley), Fiber Artist from Oakland, CA Fabric is my chosen medium of expression through which I create realistic portraits of people and objects. I find color, light, shadow, line and value in the pattern of ordinary household fabrics. From these I snip small pieces which I arrange and fuse into a figurative composition. As such the work grows from within rather than being applied to the surface of a canvas by paint, pencil or similar drawing tools. When the image is complete, I sew it together with the stitch line constituting the final “drawn” line. —Artist Statement, Alice Beasley Give thanks to folk artist Rachel D.K. Clark for introducing Acres of Ancestry to Alice Beasley after being mesmerized by her feature in the recent edition of QuiltFolk Magazine. Acres of Ancestry is deeply honored to have two of Alice’s fiber artworks from her powerful “Having Her Say” series in our permanent collection and traveling exhibition. The quilts will be on view at an art exhibition at Santa Clara University from November 13, 2023 to February 2, 2024. For more information regarding Alice Beasley’s artistic practice, visit alicebeasley.com. Fiber Artwork: In My Wake by Alice Beasley. 2018. 56.5 x 37.5 inches. “I bore easily,” Alice Beasley said, laughing. “So I’m always looking for different things. I would say my work is divided into political and non-political, which I’m just making for beauty. And when I tire of one, I move to the other. And when world events make me crazy enough, I have to speak out in fabric.” Get this Oakland-based fabric artist’s full story on page 88 of Quiltfolk, Issue 27: California Bay Area. Alice Beasley: @alicembeasley Story by: Mel Burke @melburkewrites Photography: Melanie Zacek @melanie.zacek Photo Stylist: Kimberlee Zacek @kimberleezacek #quiltfolk #myquiltfolk #quiltfolkmagazine #quiltmagazine #quiltersofinstagram #quilts #quilting #quiltCulture #quiltcommunity #quilters #quiltypleasure #instaquilt #armchairtraveler #QuiltfolkCalifornia #QuiltfolkBA #CaliforniaQuilters #CaliforniaQuilter#QuiltfolkBayArea #BayAreaQuilters #AliceBeasley #AliceBeasleyQuilts

In celebration of Black History Month and our ongoing #SFArtsBHM series, we want to shine a light on the incredible talents of Alice Beasley, an African American San Francisco based fabric artist who has been making portraits since 1998. “Fabric is my chosen medium of expression through which I create realistic portraits of people and objects. The “Deeds Not Words” touring quilt exhibit was one of my favorite exhibits at this year’s International Quilt Festival. These spectacular art quilts each commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to our U.S. Constitution which grants all women the right to vote. These two celebrate two women of color important for many of their actions during their life times, including (& not limited to) their contribution to women’s suffrage. 1) a close-up “Vote for You” by Therese May. @theresemay7 2) The full design featuring a unique portrait of Sojourner Truth who “was a beautiful, self-assured, and great woman. 3) Ms. May’s complete artistic statement. 4) A second quilt “She Refused to Walk Behind” created by Alice Beasley @alicembeasley features Ms. Ida Wells, a black woman who was directed to March at the back of the 1913 suffrage March. 5) Ms. Beasley’s full artistic statement. These are two quilts from this special exhibit that featured over 25 quilts. Each one was wonderful. The many artist statements were superb. This was an excellent history lesson about our struggle for the right to vote. Why didn’t I take more photos this day? Never enough time to admire everything at the #internationalquiltfestival Would you believe I still have a few more quilts to share from my visit to this year’s quilt extravaganza in Houston? #quiltfestival2022 #sojournertruth #IdaBWells #deedsnotwords #whencanigetacat #theresemayartquilts #theresemay #alicebeasley #alicebeasleyartist #alicebeasleyquilt

For thirty years, the Oakland-based, self-taught quilter Alice Beasley has spoken out on issues and events that are meaningful to her through her figurative appliqué quilts. Join us for the premiere episode of TAC's Artist Series by the filmmaker Mark Haffenreffer. The film captures Alice at work, her process and inspirations. It also tells the story of how she came to quilting and fabric portraiture, and the themes in her work, including her family history and expressions of the Black Experience in the United States. Following the viewing of the film, there will be a conversation between the artist and fellow fiber artist Mirka Knaster. Alice and Mirka will discuss in depth selected pieces of Alice’s works, their context, and messages. The two artists will also discuss their separate but mutual paths to artistic expression. Alice M. Beasley is an artist who creates portraits with fabric. On June 2017, she requested to use my photo of the hands in a overcrowded prison to produce a piece for retiring Federal Judge Thelton Henderson, who reformed the California penal system. This is how it looks on slide 2. My photograph was taken in Manhattan, NYC, NY in September 1972 in Tombs Prison. Alice Beasley, Oakland based artist with “Unidentified Black Male”, 2015, Fabric composition of needle-felted wool, cotton and cheesecloth on gallery wrapped canvas, 36 x 24 inches in “Deadlocked and Loaded: Disarming America”. I first saw Beasley’s work at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles and was mesmerized by their intricate beauty—such delicate work on issues that portray the ironies of Black life versus white life in the US. White men can carry assault weapons into public spaces, Black men and Black children on the contrary are shot daily over the merest perception of a weapon. Beasley says, “As bad as Newtown was, the reality is that black children and teens are the primary victims of gun deaths. An estimated 18,227 children and teens were injured with guns in 2017. Black children and teens were four times more likely to be killed or injured with a gun than their white peers. But, unlike Newton, these deaths are cloaked in anonymity and draw no concern from public or media. No child is safe in a nation with easy access to deadly weapons. Guns lethalize hate, anger and despair—increasing the odds a senseless act of violence turns into an irreversible tragedy.” Read more, link in bio. #deadlockedandloaded #alicebeasley #karengutfreundart #feministart #feministartist #femaleartist #socialjustice #blacklivesmatter #blm #humanrights #activism #racism #racialjustice #activist #bethechange #protest #civilrights #socialchange #policebrutality #gunviolence #endgunviolence #enoughisenough #notonemore #policebrutality #marchforourlives #stopgunviolence #gunviolenceprevention #gunreform #guncontrolnow #artivism

Alice Beasley @alicembeasley "Unidentified Black Male", 2015 Fabric composition of needle-felted wool, cotton and cheesecloth on gallery wrapped canvas. “36 X 24” Courtesy of the Artist Alice Beasley was prompted to make "Unidentified Black Male" after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown. Beasley states, “As bad as Newtown was, the reality is that black children and teens are the primary victims of gun deaths. Of the 5700 children and teens who died from gunfire in 2008 and 2009, 60% were black, eight times the death rate for white children and teens. But, unlike Newton, these deaths are cloaked in anonymity and draw no concern from public or media.” While the original impetus for "Unidentified Black Male" was young unknown victims of gun violence, this work urges us to consider the many unknown victims of police brutality and the overwhelming magnitude of how many people of color have been abused or murdered over the centuries; the loss of life appallingly excluded from justice and history. #alicebeasley #UnidentifiedBlackMale #fabriccomposition #theartistcollector #tohearandbeheard https://www.scu.edu/art/gallery-exhibitions/gallery-exhibition-schedule/2020-2021/to-hear-and-be-heard/

We love seeing Kala artists and Kala AIR/Fellowship alumni out in the world - exhibiting new work, meeting people for gallery appointments, and reminding us to keep on keeping on. Saturday gallery visits included @nancymintz and her stunning show Trace - @traywickcontemporary through Nov 7 and @karimipantea solo show The Unbearable Lightness of Mathematics - @mercury20gallery - an immersive installation of Pantea’s personal story of 4 years of science education in the late 80s under the Islamic Republic of Iran. This exhibition runs through October 17. We recommend making a time to see both shows. Thanks to both artists (and to @missussippey) for the walk through and conversation - that part of pandemic gallery visiting is kind of nice - being able to connect more deeply and have conversations with artists, curators, gallerists, etc. Next up is a Friday visit to see @emilypayneart and her new work @seagergray. And then SF art trip to see Hung Liu @renabranstengallery and @alicembeasley and 9 of her fabric works at 650 California Street. What else? #nancymintz #panteakarimi #traywickcontemporary #mercury20 #emilypayne #seagergraygallery #hungliu #renabranstengallery #alicebeasley #650californiastreet

So today was the first time I took this pair out. We got Popcorn not long before lockdown, so going out and about kind of wasn’t able to happen 🙄 He was also really sore when we got him but some hacking, rest and light schooling has definitely helped and he’s a different pony! Booked on to @alicegracebeasley clinic at Golden Valley Equestrian Centre. Bella absolutely loved the session and I loved Alice’s way of teaching. Popcorn was hoof perfect and I’m super proud of them both. I can highly recommend Alice and am looking forward to our next session. Lots of things to practice in the meantime. Just need Bella not to grow for at least a year! #dressage #dressageclinic #alicebeasley #goldenvalleyequestrian #rotherwoodpopcorn #bellaandpopcorn #family #equestrians

The SAQA multi-region exhibition "Shifting Tides: Convergence in Cloth" opens this Friday, April 19 at Works/San José! There is a reception on Saturday, April 20 from 1-3 pm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Shifting Tides" is a collection of work by 45 artists chosen from the seven Pacific-facing regions of SAQA. From their strikingly different vantage points—from Southern California northward to Western Canada and Alaska, plus Hawaii—artists from a range of backgrounds were asked to express their concerns and feelings about the Pacific. “Merely because we live in this part of the world, we as individuals are part of the Pacific ecosystem. On a daily basis we may not recognize the changes that are happening, but they are of vital importance to our world,” write Georgia French and Sonja Campbell, co-chairs of the exhibit planning committee. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Artwork Details: "In My Wake" by Alice Beasley @alicembeasley| "Nowhere to Run" by Beth Blankenship |@bethblankenshipartist | “Rings of Eternity” by Lisa Jenni @thinkquilts.lisa.jenni | "The Burning Sea" by Phyllis A. Rep. Barbara Lee (!) from California’s 13th Congressional district at the opening of “In Her Hands” pictured here with artist Alice Beasley and the magnificent portrait she quilted of Rep. Lee #barbaraleespeaksforme ⚡️⚡️⚡️ ⚡️⚡️⚡️TODAY: Amid reports of grave abuses of children at immigrant detention facilities run by the U.S. government, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) urged the United Nations to investigate President Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy and the conditions children are being subjected to after being separated from their families by the Department of Homeland Security. (From commondreams.org) ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️. Barbara Lee has been standing up for the people for a long time.
