It went to No.1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, the first of the duo’s two number 1 R&B hits. In the UK it reached No.34. The song was written and produced by regular Gaye/Terrell collaborators Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. It was the first release off the duo’s second album: You’re All I Need Aretha Franklin remade the song for her 1974 album Let Me in Your Life. It was issued as the album’s third hit single that August. It reached No.6 on the Billboard Soul chart, as well as No.44 in Cash Box and No.47 on the Hot 100, that fall. It won Franklin the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Grammy for 1974 marking Franklin’s eighth total and consecutive win in that category and her last such win until the Grammys for 1981. Donny Osmond and Marie Osmond, billed as Donny & Marie, remade “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” for their November 1976 album release New Season, with the track having a concurrent single release to reach No.21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1977, also charting Adult Contemporary at No.17. Thursday's soundtrack - Paul Kelly "Stealing In The Name of The Lord" 1970 on Happy Tiger. This is his first of six albums 1970-1993, and he wrote all of the songs on it. Singer and songwriter Paul Kelly got his first professional break in the early sixties when Clarence Reid invited him to join The Del-Mires. Kelly released singles and albums through 1999, sometimes mixing social commentary in with ballads and R&B. William Bell "On A Roll" 1989 on his label WILBE RECORDS. He released 17 albums 1967-2016. His first release was in 1957 with the Del-Rios. Singer and songwriter, William was an active and guiding force in the evolution of STAX Records. He was also actively involved in the show "Take Me To The River" where I saw him live when the show played in Portland. Bell was awarded R&B Pioneer Award from Rhythm & Blues Foundation. This is first class R&B, and while it is not my favorite, I have a dozen of his albums and I have never rejected one. A favorite artist for sure. Esther Phillips "Confessin' The Blues" 1976 in Atlantic Records. Discovered and promoted at a young age by Johnny Otis, Esther had a strong and prolific career. Her talent exhibited in Jazz, Blues, R&B, and even Country. Valerie Simpson "Exposed" 1971 on Tamla. This is a great album of high class work. Singer, songwriter, and pianist Valerie Simpson was half of the very successful team of Ashford & Simpson. They wrote eight of the ten songs on this album. I have read that they split from Motown due to a lack of promotion for her two albums and that is probably true. But, lack of commercial success may also be due to the sophistication of the work. It just isn't fodder for the young record-buying masses.

RCA's budget label Camden Records is an unlikely place for a groovy soul album to appear but in 1967 the conservative label was starting to flex its muscles and clearly trying new things. Found this at a thrift yesterday in pristine condition, hopeful that the underlying DNA of the players (amazingly enough) listed here would make at least some of it worthwhile. I wasn't wrong. Pretty Purdie for the win on drums... as well as Valerie Simpson, Chuck Rainey, and one Lesley Miller who apparently sang back ups on Steely Dan's Gaucho and Donald Fagan's The Nightfly, among many others...
