Afterwards, his family relocated to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he became a member of Christ Temple Baptist Church. While there, he sang with a group called the Hammond Singers (named after the founding minister, James Hammond). Later, Nickolas attended and graduated from Willow Run High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, before pursuing his professional career, where he would ultimately meet his wife, Valerie. They met at Harlem’s White Rock Baptist Church in 1964. In his teens, he moved to NYC to pursue entertainment. At Harlem's White Rock Baptist Church in the early '60s, he met Valerie Simpson, sparking a legendary partnership both personally & professionally. Together, they formed Ashford & Simpson, writing songs that grabbed the music industry's attention. In 1966, Ashford & Simpson signed with Motown Records as staff writers. Their collaboration with Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell produced some of Motown’s most iconic hits, including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” & “You’re All I Need to Get By.” These chart-toppers lbecame timeless classics. In addition to their songwriting success, Ashford & Simpson pursued their own music career. They released a string of successful albums throughout the 70s & 80s. Their 1984 hit single “Solid” became their signature song, reaching the top of the charts and solidifying their status as music icons. Beyond their work as performers, Ashford & Simpson continued to write countless hits for artists, including Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Aretha, Teddy & Gladys Knight. @NYCityCenter, it was great to join original Ikette & hit songwriter @JoshieJoArmstead for @MTC_NYC opening night for Brooklyn Laundry, an excellent new original play by @JohnP.Shanley (Doubt, Moonstruck) featuring a great cast of @CecilyStrong (of @NBCsnl) as Fran, @ASyglowski as Susie, and @Florencia_Lozano as Trish, three sisters dealing with family traumas and illness and @ZZ_NYC (of @SHO_Dexter) as once down on his luck Owen who manages to turn some bad breaks into a positive life as laundromat entrepreneur expanding from the titular Brooklyn location to Queens, serving a literal metaphor for Fran, whose laundry was lost by Owen's staff long before the play opens with her as a struggling single office worker who feels like her dream of having a lover, a child, and a fulfilled life seems like an equally mysterious riddle as her missing clothing. Strong's well-known comic chops are secondary to her poignant portrayal of Fran as she tries not to drown in family burdens with Syglowski and Lozano before she can realize her own desires, working well with Zayas as they gingerly explore an unexpected budding romance. Shanley's deft writing explores the push and pull between the frothy fantasy of romance and the crushing reality of life and how it's easier to shoulder the overwhelming when you aren't on your own. The well-designed revolving set traveled from the laundromat to a garden restaurant to a mobile home in Pennsylvania to a studio apartment. The play also featured "I Don't Need No Doctor" the classic Ashford/@ValerieAshford/Armstead song that was a hit for @Official.RayCharles in 1966 and it was great to meet the cast with Armstead at the after party and have a great conversation with noted playwright & actor @StephenAdlyGuirgis (who was in one my favorite films, Kenneth Lonergan's lost classic Margaret). Armstead gave a great capsule review at the end: Brooklyn Laundry don't need no doctor! The other day, I rewatched NEW JACK CITY. One of the best 90s movies ever done, with an all-star Black cast, it’s a crime film that definitely feels like a product of its time (but in a good way). Wesley Snipes plays notorious drug lord Nino Brown taking over NYC with his crack empire and Detective Scotty Appleton (played by Ice-T—seriously, it feels like who he’s been playing a detective on screen almost as long as he’s been rapping) is determined to bring him down. Happy Birthday to The Legendary Valerie Simpson. Since the beginning of their career together over 57 years ago, Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson have become one of the most prolific and versatile musical couples in recording history. Combining skills as performers, songwriters and producers, they have created an unprecedented catalog of chart-topping hit singles and album, collecting 22 gold and platinum records and more than 50 ASCAP Awards. The couple met in 1964 at the White Rock Baptist Church in New York City. Nick had come to New York to pursue a dance career and Valerie was playing piano and singing with the church's legendary choir. Nick joined the choir and the two began writing pop songs for fun. Word of the talented duo spread quickly and Ashford & Simpson sold their first batch of songs for $64.00. A career was born. As staff songwriters for Sceptor Records, Nick and Valerie wrote Ray Charles' classic "Let's Go Get Stoned" in 1964 which brought them to the attention of Motown where they wrote their second smash "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Other Gaye/Terrell hits followed including "Your Precious Love," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," and "You're All I Need to Get By." Ashford & Simpson signed with Warner Brothers in 1973 as recording artists and recorded eight albums, four of which went gold. Their numerous hit singles include "Send It," "Found A Cure," "Don't Cost You Nothing," "It Seems To Hang On," and "Love Don't Make It Right." In addition to their own growing catalog of songs, Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced for Ben E. King, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Quincy Jones and Diana Ross. In the 80's, Ashford & Simpson signed with Capitol Records and their hit "Solid as a Rock" continues to be a signature song for the duo. Listening to Ashford & Simpson’s music always brings back so many good memories. They are a big part of the Soundtrack in my life. I tried to conjure up a few songs for this birthday tribute.
