According to the tale, in addition to men and women, the goddess of mountains and creation (Ninmah) created a 3rd gender comprised of (what modern people in the West would label) beings who were biologically barren and individuals who had neither female nor male genitalia. The male creator god (Enki) took a liking to this 3rd gender and bestowed upon them the sacred positions of clerics (naditu) and servants to royalty (girsequ). Portraits of three members of India’s Hijra community at this year’s Koovagam festival in Tamil Nadu. Hijra are legally recognised as a third gender in India. They have their own culture and traditions and follow their own gurus. Traditionally they have earned a living by singing, dancing and giving blessings at weddings, at homes where a child has been born and at other important events. Despite their legal status they still suffer discrimination and have few work options easily available to them. Many are forced into earning a living through begging or prostitution but others are starting to make an impact in mainstream society. Lavania, in the first picture works as a consultant on matters relating to the community. On my recent India trip I met community members working in various fields including a sports doctor, office workers, restaurant staff and a law student. The festival at Koovagam relates to the story of the Hindu god, Aravan, who was about to go to war knowing he would be killed the next day. He was allowed to marry but as no woman wished to become a widow so quickly, a Hijra stepped forward to be his wife. The festival recreates this story with thousands of Hijra (and others) “marrying” Aravan on the first day and becoming widows a day later. About 200,000 people attend the festival, many of them Hijra. TWO SPIRIT: "Two spirit" is an umbrella term adopted by various First Nations tribes of North America to describe queerness in a strictly indigenous context. It was generally adopted in the 1990s as a way to more easily explain Native American queerness to non-Native Americans since each tribe has its own very different definition of "queerness" that can be confusing or too nuanced for most people not raised in a First Nations culture to readily understand (with a singular, generalized term also being beneficial in seeking legal protections). Only a First Nations individual can call themselves "two spirit", and even then, it is just a generalized term to relate familiarity with people outside their tribe.
