The source of the case involved a 2017 incident when encrypted messaging platform Telegram was ordered by the Russian Federal Security Service to help decrypt communications from specific users suspected of terrorist involvement. 🇺🇸🩺🗽 Louisiana lawmakers advance bill to reclassify abortion drugs, worrying doctors BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a bill that would make it a crime to possess two abortion-inducing drugs without a prescription, a move that doctors fear could prevent them from adequately treating their patients in a timely manner. Under the bill, which aims to reclassify mifepristone and misoprostol, pregnant patients would still be able to possess the drugs with a valid prescription. But in a state with one of the country’s highest maternal mortality rates, doctors fear the legislation would have chilling effects. More than 200 doctors signed a letter to lawmakers saying the measure could produce a “barrier to physicians’ ease of prescribing appropriate treatment” and cause unnecessary fear and confusion among both patients and doctors. The bill heads to the Senate next. “These medications touch on maternal health, which, as we’ve all discussed for several years now, is really bad in Louisiana,” state Rep. Mandie Landry, a Democrat, said as she argued against reclassification of the drugs. “In their (doctors’) view, this (measure) will have very bad effects.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved mifepristone in 2000 to end pregnancy, when used in combination with misoprostol. The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in March on behalf of doctors who oppose abortion and want to restrict access to mifepristone. The justices did not appear ready to limit access to the drug, however. The reclassification of the two drugs in Louisiana is an amendment to a bill originating in the Senate that would create the crime of “coerced criminal abortion by means of fraud.” The measure would make it a crime for a person to knowingly use medications to cause or attempt to cause an abortion without a pregnant person’s knowledge or consent. 🇺🇸🩺🗽 A six-week abortion ban went into effect in Florida yesterday forcing abortion providers in the state to stop providing most of their care. Doctors have been working overtime over the last few weeks to get as many patients in the door as possible before the ban went into effect. These photos from a Florida Planned Parenthood bathroom, obtained by NBC News, show just how much the center meant to people who traveled huge distances for abortion care. Florida provided over 84,000 abortions last year – a number hugely inflated by bans in nearby southern states. Most patients will now have to travel to North Carolina, Virginia, New Mexico or Colorado, if they even have the time and resources to make the trip. A network of clinics called ‘A Woman’s Choice’ recently opened up a center in Virginia, anticipating most of their abortion care at their Jacksonville, FL center would have to be put on hold this month. In case of Frank Vitus v. Narcotics Control Bureau and Ors. The Supreme Court observed that the right to privacy protected by Article 21 of the Indian Constitution is violated by the requirement to share one's Google pin location as a condition of bail. A Bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan said, "It cannot be a bail condition. We agree that there are two instances where this Court has done it, but it cannot be a condition for bail," the Court said. Previously, the Bench had ordered Google India to provide an explanation of the operation of its pin location-sharing feature on Google Maps. This is being done in order to determine whether asking accused parties to reveal their Google pin location will infringe upon their right to privacy. The Court had clarified that it is not impleading Google India as a party to the case, but was only seeking information from the company. After hearing Google today, the Court reserved orders on the aspect of Google pin location as a bail condition. Kerala High Court directs lower courts, not to entertain the appeals regarding DNA tests of adopted children of rape survivors and victims. While issuing the guidelines regarding this, the court also observed that collecting blood samples of these children can imbalance their emotional status. The court also ordered the Child Welfare Committee to make sure that the DNA samples of children given in adoption should be completed before the adoption process. According to the court when there is a conflict between the Right to privacy of a person and the duty of the court to know the truth, the court should decide after balancing the interests of the parties and properly considering whether a DNA test is important to arrive at a just decision. WhatsApp has told the Delhi High Court that the messaging platform will effectively shut down in India if it is forced to break message encryption.
