Beautiful Shetland pony looking out over her stunning native scenery 🐴🥰 Shetland ponies are an ancient breed, with remains of small ponies being found on the Shetland Isles dating to 2000 years ago! The remoteness of Shetland meant that very few horses were imported which has kept the breed pure. The lack of available fodder (especially in the winter) made these ponies extremely hardy, strong, and resilient - it also possibly accounts for their small stature (which would need less energy than a larger animal). Like a lot of the UK breeds, they can turn to seaweed in times of scarce food - in fact all the Scottish pony breeds often lunge at the chance to forage seaweed. Shetland ponies an important part of life on these islands and the crofts people lived and worked on. From transporting fertilisers like seaweed and peat, ploughing, and transporting people. They have legendary strength and are the strongest horse breed relative to its size - they can pull nearly twice their own weight! Shetland ponies also became very in demand as pit ponies - in fact many of the best Shetlands were exported to the mainland and there was a risk that the best stock may be lost to the islands if it carried on. Some of these ponies were reimported to Shetland to keep the breed quality high. Today the Shetland pony is immensely popular all around the world. The Royal family have a great fondness for them that started with Queen Victoria. Perhaps the success in popularity of the Shetland pony is the great love and pride many people in Shetland have for them. I have never travelled to a place where a breed originated to see so much merchandise and physical ponies in fields. In my opinion this is how we should see all of our breeds - a part of our heritage that should be celebrated and preserved 🥰🐴

*Amphibian* I love it when I find myself with my camera in the right place at the right time!! Last weekend I was in Sandness helping my in-laws planting some trees for a large project up at their croft (700 trees planted in 4 days!). More than fifty years have passed since oil was discovered in the waters north-east of Shetland and, over that period, the islands have hosted all the activities associated with it, the largest single investment being the terminal at Sullom Voe. Voici l'abribus le plus insolite d'Ecosse ! 🏴 En 1996, un jeune garçon de 6 ans, Bobby Macauley, roulait tous les jours en vélo jusqu’à l'abri situé sur Unst, dans les Shetlands, pour prendre le bus qui l’emmenait vers l’école. Sur cette île où la météo est loin d’être clémente au quotidien, le vieil abri en béton était pour lui et ses deux amis un refuge bienvenu qui en plus lui permettait de retrouver son vélo au sec une fois les cours finis. 🚌 Mais les autorités locales ayant décrété que cet abribus était devenu vétuste et dangereux le démolirent en 1996. Déçu par cette décision, Bobby rédigea une lettre adressée au journal local. Emu par la lettre du jeune garçon, le journal lança une pétition pour qu’un nouvel abribus soit construit et que Bobby puisse de nouveau être au sec quelques instants avant d’aller à l’école. Un nouvel abribus moderne fut installé peu après devant l’émoi suscité auprès des locaux par la demande de Bobby. Dans les mois qui suivirent, des objets firent mystérieusement leur apparition dans cet endroit pourtant anonyme. Un fauteuil, une table, un tapis, un téléphone… Petit à petit l’abribus de Bobby devenait un endroit poétique et magique, une sorte de cabane perdue sur le bord d’une route des Shetland qui attira rapidement les regards des médias.
