This large temple complex was located in Praeneste and was dedicated to the #Goddess Fortuna in her role of guiding the fortune of the first born child. Slide 1: This is the adyton (the innermost sanctuary) of the Temple of Hosn Niha, another great example of the proto-Baroque legacy of the Beqaa Valley. Slide 2: A segmental broken pediment is an architectural feature with a curved (or segmental) shape that has a gap in the center. This example is particularly interesting due to its deep sweep profile. Slides 3 & 4: Engaged columns are partly embedded in a wall and project out from its surface. Unlike free-standing columns, engaged columns are attached to the wall and serve more of a decorative purpose, extending outward by 1/3 to 3/4 of their diameter. The last slide shows a rare example of a smaller pilaster, although of a higher order like the Corinthian, discreetly embedded in a larger, lesser Ionic order. That extraordinary state of preservation can be attributed to its continuous use without significant alteration or despoliation of the building materials. Additionally, it has served the city of Nîmes as town assembly hall, private home, Christian church, seat of the city prefecture, etc. Louis XIV considered dismantling it and moving it to Versailles; Thomas Jefferson, while minister to France in 1785, commissioned a stucco model of it, which he used as his reference when designing the Virginia statehouse at Richmond. The temple is generally assumed to have been an Imperial gift to Nemausus (Nîmes) from Augustus, and indeed he may have visited Nemausus during his time in Gaul (16–15 BCE). The order of the temple is, Roman Corinthian and its design is pseudoperipteral, with six columns across the front and eleven along the flanks. The temple was the centrepiece of the Nemausus forum and seems to have been dedicated to the recently deceased adopted sons of Augustus, Gaius and Lucius Caesar. Furthermore, the entablature of the Maison Carrée reveals a series of clamp holes running across the frieze course. Maak kennis met de specialist! Mijn naam is Jos Kleijne, ik ben zelfstandig archeoloog en als bodem micro-morfoloog betrokken bij Herwen-Hemeling. Micromorfologisch onderzoek richt zich op hele kleine elementen in de bodem. Door de bodem te bekijken onder de microscoop kan ik uitspraken doen over wat er is gebeurd en veranderd in het landschap door de tijd heen: het gaat hierbij om activiteiten die zijn gedaan door mensen, maar ook natuurlijke processen. Binnen de uitwerking van Herwen-Hemeling bekijk ik de grond van specifieke plaatsen rond en uit de tempels en uit de kuilen van de opgraving. Door kleine metalen bakjes in de profielen te slaan wordt er grond verzameld die nog in ‘originele staat’ is, dit wil zeggen dat er verder niks mee is gebeurd nadat mensen het honderden jaren geleden hebben achtergelaten (zie foto 1). Deze grond wordt vervolgens ondergedompeld in kunsthars (zie foto 2) zodat het hard wordt (zie foto 3), en daarna kan het in hele dunne plaatjes worden gesneden, 0,03mm, (foto 4). Op foto 5 is één zo’n plaatje te zien, in het blauwe cirkeltje rechts midden is een heel klein zwart driehoekje te zien. Op foto 6 is dit deel onder een sterke vergroting te zien. Op dit beeld zijn voor mij stukjes verbrand bot, tand en as te herkennen. Door middel van dit onderzoek krijgen we in Herwen inzicht in de sporen van menselijk handelen op een hele kleine schaal en kunnen we deze reconstrueren. Beantwoordbare vragen zijn: is het een natuurlijke laag, bijvoorbeeld sediment van een overstroming, of is het door mensen opgebracht? En wat voor sporen zijn er dan achtergelaten door menselijke activiteiten? Hoe hebben mensen hun achtergelaten materiaal behandeld? En wat voor invloed had het latere bodemleven op de resten? Helaas was ik niet bij de opgraving aanwezig, vanwege een ander project. Een deel van m’n onderzoek bestaat nu dus ook uit het herleiden van wat ik onder de microscoop zie, naar een betekenis op het schaalniveau van de opgraving. Vragen? As I continued to walk the streets in Rome I came across the Pantheon, outside of which I got serenaded by a random musician while eating dinner. The Basilica was such a sight to see, I woke up super early on my last day to take in the historical beauty by myself.
Nestled just inside Rome’s Aurelian walls, framed by tram and train tracks, stands a captivating structure known as the Temple of Minerva Medica. Despite its name, however, this grand 12-sided brick building adorned with niches and windows was likely not a temple dedicated to Minerva at all. Recent studies propose it was instead a nymphaeum within the Horti Linciani, a luxurious villa complex from the 3rd century that was fed by the city’s extensive aqueduct network. While its original purpose remains elusive, this architectural marvel endures as one of Rome's most remarkable yet underappreciated ancient treasures. 😀👇𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝: The original idea for the temple was credited to Marcus Furius Camillus after the latter made a vow to construct it. However, the archaeological remains have suggested that it was a later construction and it came by Gnaeus Flavius, furthermore, to make the story more interesting, he was a curule aedile, the son of a former slave and due to his humble origins he was not liked very much. This was not to stop Flavius, as he had hoped through the construction of this temple that it would promote a sense of reconciliation between the disgruntled patricians and plebeians. The upper class senate voiced their opinions through their refusal to allocate funds for the project. Albeit, the eager Flavius used the confiscated funds from some criminals to erect a small bronze shrine with an inscription that dated its foundation to the 449th year of the founding of the city, 304 B.C. Meet the team: Mijn naam is Danaë Evers en ik ben Junior Projectmedewerker bij RAAP (Oost Nederland). In 2022 werkte ik samen met een heel aantal collega’s aan dit fantastische project! Toen het project begon stond ik de eerste weken zelf op een ander groot project. Continue hoorde ik de verhalen over de gave vondsten die werden gedaan. Stiekem was ik wel een beetje jaloers op iedereen die al mee werkte aan dit project en stond ik te popelen om er zelf ook betrokken bij te raken. Na een aantal weken de pareltjes voorbij te zien komen was het dan eindelijk zo ver: er was zoveel te doen in Herwen dat er meer mensen nodig waren, en ook ik mocht naar de Geitenwaard! Mijn werkzaamheden binnen het project waren in eerste instantie algemeen veldmedewerker, ik coupeerde en documenteerde de sporen en profielen. Later waren mijn werkzaamheden voornamelijk in het gedeelte van het Tempelcomplex waar al het pleisterwerk is gevonden. Dagen achterelkaar hebben we laagje voor laagje alle stukken pleisterwerk vrij gelegd. Dit was onwijs gaaf om te doen, zo’n unieke vondst het was bijna alsof we in Italië zaten (het hete zomer weer hielp daar ook erg bij)! Naast de werkzaamheden als archeoloog in het veld en op kantoor ben ik sinds kort ook nieuw als beheerder van deze Herwen-Hemeling pagina. Ik vind het ontzettend leuk om ook bezig te zijn met het publiek en vooral het overbrengen van informatie. Over deze opgraving is genoeg te vertellen en er komt alleen maar meer informatie bij!
