ABORIGINALS FROM HERE AND THERE Tapestry Haute Lisse. Cotton, wool, silk, bamboo fibre, linen, synthetic and natural dyes .60 m H X 1m W The project for this tapestry came to me 3 months after me and my family moved permanently in Canada, almost 20 years ago, while visiting the McMichael Art Gallery with my kids. That was my first encounter with Norval Morriseau, Fantastic First Nation's Artist, from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation. At first I was drawn to color, shapes, composition and iconography...wonderful Abstraction view of Nature. I was trying to understand what magical connection between First Nations Art and my own essence from my country, bringing me memories of my Grandfather's Museum, reference books and all the stories from preHispanic Mexico. Similarities in concepts, colors, ...in this whirlwind of time and history. How do I fit in...we as immigrants experiencing the changes in language, costumes, weather...how do we emerge/blend in the diaspora... It is when I had this juxtaposed image of a Mayan profile and the many faces Morriseau portrayed. Mayan numerals from the codex, symbols from the Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation's, and all the iconography I thought in my mind, being mixed/ blended and processed in an image that could show the way I was feeling. I was then, after seeing the weaving grow, at peace, understanding my welcoming new Country, and recognizing the importance of my own. This year for my birthday, @cflmcormier utterly spoiled me with a print by one of my favourite artists: Norval Morrisseau. The print is called "Thunderbird Shaman Teaching." I've been a fan of Morrisseau since 2008, and have been in love with him and the Woodland style of art for as long, and I have wanted to have a piece (or several pieces!) of Indigenous art in my house for so, so long - so I can't stop staring at my walls and smiling!
