"I had a friend who actually runs Riot Fest in Chicago, he was a good friend of mine, this was years after Bob passed away. And I think I had talked to Giovanna at that time about letting us in. Well, this guy, he was a multi-millionaire, and he had visions of maybe buying some of that land at that point and turning it to a music venue. And the tragedy with Sean is that he actually died of a stroke probably a month after our visit to Cementland, so that obviously never happened. So, he passed away, but I mean honestly, if he would've bought it, it would've been truly amazing. He would've made it into something like Red Rocks in Colorado or whatever. But yeah, Sean McKeough is his name. He had the financial backing to really make this thing really awesome. And he had talked to me too about curating some murals out there. After Sean and I had toured that day, we had decided that maybe we'd first start out by building a stage near the entrance of Cementland and getting things started there. And then, slowly after the venue was opened, we would let more people go throughout Cementland. So, the original vision was to just get people in there, start getting some money. 👛I had just started trying out painting on different surfaces and the distressed black frame made me love the idea of filling the inside with a beautiful scene. Plus, it was a thrift find so I couldn't pass it up.... 🌿This scene has come up quite a few times in my work (see "Quiet" from last year); it was one I used to drive past almost daily while living in rural Wisconsin. “Quilted Journey” Quilt scraps, ribbon, rhinestone trim. 13.5 x 24.5 in This work was born out of a pile of quilt scraps a friend returned to me after she made a quilt jacket. The quilt was rescued from the thrift store and turned out to be fairly worn, but worked out well for the softest jacket ever and now this quilted weaving.
