Last Sunday was an absolute delight as I made two more visits to meet another talented artist participating in the inaugural GOSS project 2023. While I was already familiar with the work of Marianne Penberthy, the name Helen Gough-Beard was a new and intriguing discovery for me. Meeting these remarkable artists in person was a genuine privilege, and their displayed artworks left me speechless. As the curtains closed on the GOSS project this past Monday, I couldn't help but reflect on this initiative's immense potential. In addition, this initiative could be the catalyst that brings fresh, emerging artists to the vibrant Geraldton and its surroundings. I want to thank the GOSS team for allowing me to channel my creative copywriting and photography skills into this meaningful project. Over the weekend, I embarked on an inspiring journey to explore the remarkable artwork of two exceptionally gifted local artists. It was a deliberate choice not to wield my camera, for I yearned to immerse myself entirely in the studio's ambience, to drink in the very essence of the artistry that surrounded me. On Tuesday, my artistic expedition led me to the enchanting studio of the talented Narelle Beaver. This time, I allowed my camera to capture a few moments. What transpired left me spellbound, for I witnessed how the element of water, as masterfully encapsulated in Narelle's paintings, possesses the power to ignite inspiration and undergo transformative metamorphosis. Yesterday, I took a road trip to Northampton. I had two reasons: meet local artists and their studios and see the renovated Tavern! I was genuinely amazed by the exceptional work on display. What these artists and their beautiful minds and hearts have created is truly impressive. Let me tell you, the GOSS project stands as a beacon of artistic brilliance and innovation, a testament to the creative spirit that thrives within our community. Not to mention that people from Perth decided to travel far North rather than South this year. Link in bio.✨ Alexander the Great, (aka: Alexander Denning) born & raised in Central California but now living in the Midwest, has remained in the spotlight ever since his pursuit as a semi-professional skateboarder during his youth. Following a promising career in the sport, ATG soon began to attract the attention of various companies interested in sponsorships, as well as radio, television, newspaper, & magazine publication spotlights. He traveled the U.S. competing nationally up to the age of 17. A few poor choices in later years would inevitably lead to various jail stays, felony convictions, & being handed down a 98 month prison sentence stemming from attempted murder charges. It wouldn’t be more than a year after his release from prison that ATG began to find himself rising quickly within the fashion & film industry; walking in New York Fashion Week, securing various publications, & even booking his first acting role of that of a prisoner. With a deep rooted desire in becoming a leading voice of change within his community, he has worked alongside local advocates in helping to build & strengthen his community ties; while creating a variety of charity fashion shows, events, & movements to alleviate communal problems. Through his brand, ATG TV, & with the help of his team, ATG continues to reach further through a message of hope, health, & inspiration in living to your full potential. ATG’s current projects include: his forthcoming memoir, titled, ‘Another 2nd Chance’; that follows his up & downs from skateboarding, incarceration, to his reentry into society. “There’s something magical about when the lights go down and your guard is dropped, your heart and mind are open in a different way,” says Sean Dorsey (@seandorseydance), an artist recognized today as the United State’s first widely-acclaimed transgender dance choreographer. A dancer, writer, educator, and activist, Sean has toured his work in more than 30 cities across the US and abroad, in addition to imparting his explicitly trans-positive pedagogy in more than 35 cities. As a longtime social practice artist, he creates dance-theater work based on the engagement of local communities. Indira Goodwine is the program director for Dance at the New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) where she directs NEFA’s National Dance Project and major dance initiatives throughout New England. "I see my work as a deep calling," says artist, community organizer, and cultural producer Asad Ali Jafri (@asewonder). "This calling is so aligned with my life and inherent values that I cannot imagine being able to do anything else." Asad's calling has led him to support diverse groups and communities in overcoming their imagined boundaries. With roots in Hip Hop and its multiple disciplines, including a long career as a DJ, Asad works to initiate collective experiences through music, theater, dance, and site-specific intervention. “Having grown up in Northern California, my roots are in the West,” says Anika Kwinana, director of social responsibility and inclusion at Western States Arts Federation. “It is an honor to support arts leaders of color seeking to actively engage in equity and inclusion work in the region.” Anika’s performing arts career began in 2008 in Gqebera, South Africa, where she served as music and arts director of a large religious community, prior to her returning to the United States in 2014. In Gqebera, Anika supported an enormous community of artists and performers to create live productions and celebrate a variety of cultural and artistic traditions. As chair of the Arts Administrators of Color Network, Annika empowers artists and arts administrators by providing tools and resources to advocate for equity, inclusion, access, and diversity in the arts. “It’s important that we remain competitive with larger arts institutions in an effort to tell our stories,” says Neil Barclay, President and CEO of The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History (@thewrightmuseum). A former attorney, Neil came to Detroit after serving as President of New Orleans’s Contemporary Arts Center (CAC). During his five-year tenure at CAC, the institution’s budget increased by more than 40 percent including gifts from some of the nation’s leading arts philanthropists. Neil has demonstrated his personal commitment to art and culture as a peer panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, the Gerbode Foundation, and the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. “My ancestors have inspired me to seek the positive potential in all that surrounds me,” says Dr. Craig Howe, founder and director of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS). In addition to his work as a curator with the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution and as director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History, Dr. Howe has authored articles and book chapters on tribal histories, Native studies, museum exhibitions and community collaborations. With CAIRNS, Dr. Howe has developed innovative tribal histories projects and creative museum exhibitions, lectured on American Indian topics across the U.S., and provided professional development and cultural awareness training to schools and organizations. A citizen of the Ogalala Sioux Tribe, Dr. Howe was raised and lives on his family’s cattle ranch in the Lacreek District of the Pine Ridge Reservation. “I want our company to chart a course for meaningful change in our field, while honoring the very best of our art form,” says Priti Gandhi, the artistic director of Portland Opera (@portlandopera). Arriving in the fall of 2021, as part of a newly collaborative leadership structure for the company, Priti guides discussions for season planning, casting, and development of the company’s educational community engagement programs. What makes you different? 🤔 I know that's a pretty vague question to ask a business owner - let alone a HUMAN BEING lol. “My mantra was always that I am meant to assist in preserving jazz as an art form by helping musicians achieve their goals,” says Gail Boyd, lawyer and president of entertainment and music law firm Gail W. Boyd, P.C. She also runs Gail Boyd Artist Management. Gail’s advocacy for artists expands beyond musicians to include all creatives. Dee Davis founded the Center for Rural Strategies to improve economic and social conditions for communities in the countryside and around the world through the creative and innovative use of media and communications.
