Radical Live Music | 12th - 14th July 2024 | Berlin Over the moon to announce that @marinaherlop will play for our festival on Friday night! Marina Herlop shed the classical trappings of her accomplished previous albums ‘Nanook’ and ‘Babasha’ to emerge in vibrant, polymorphous form on her hypnotizing 2022 album ‘Pripyat’ released by PAN. With ‘Pripyat’ the Catalonian, conservatory-trained composer, vocalist, and pianist channelled her environment in truly posthuman form; performing alien vocal acrobatics, drawing inspiration from Carnatic music of Southern India, while planting a diversity of sonic seeds which blossom brilliantly in her sumptuous garden of chimeric compositions, produced for the first time exclusively electronically. On October 27, 2023 she brings these gestures full circle with the release of her next LP, ‘Nekkuja’. Herlop has been hitting the road hard the last two years, blowing audiences away all over the globe including performances at Primavera, CTM, Mutek, Dekmantel, Le Guess Who?, and Unsound amongst other notable events with many upcoming shows. ♀️(1.983) MARINA HERLOP (Catalunya, 1992). Pianista, cantant i compositora. Va iniciar-se al món del piano als 9 anys a l'escola de música de la seva ciutat natal, Piera, on va estudiar fins als 13. Mentre cursava Periodisme i Humanitats a la Universitat Pompeu Fabra, va reprendre les classes de piano que la portarien a accedir al Conservatori Professional de Música de Badalona, on va obtenir el Grau Professional el 2017. Ha publicat quatre àlbums en solitari (‘Nanook’, ‘Babasha’, ‘Pripyat’ i ‘Nekkuja’), i és la vocalista i teclista del grup Myōboku. L'estil del grup ha estat definit com a inusual i inclassificable, amb influències que van del space-funk al jazz psicodèlic, avant-garde, art-pop o afro-beat. INSEGURIDAD / HERLOP (82/366) Después del verano, y con el casi terminado retrato de Amélie Gautreu, Sargent vuelve a París. Sus objetivos para el “nuevo curso” son, por una parte, presentar el retrato en el Salón de París, que es una especie de pasarela “080” de los pintores de renombre y de los emergentes de la época. Un trampolín a la fama, o sea, a tener clientes. Y, por otro lado, ir obteniendo nuevos encargos, porque hay que pagar el alquiler, hay que comer... Lo de todos, vamos. Sargent mira y remira el retrato de Amélie. A sus 27 años, es un gran artista pero aún acuciado por inseguridades. Durante diez años Sargent ha trabajado junto a uno de sus maestros, el “pope” Carolus-Duran. Como pintor de un status, Carolus conoce los intríngulis y está bien relacionado con los artistas que controlan el Salon, o sea el “’080” del arte. Y un, en el fondo, inocente Sargent, pide a su antiguo maestro que vaya a su piso a ver el retrato de Amélie. Quiere saber si está preparado para presentarlo en el Salon o si se pegará una hostia y mejor presentar otra obra, o esperar. Mañana vemos qué pasa con la visita del maestro Carolus a su antiguo alumno, Sargent. En otro orden de cosas, en unos días voy a asistir al concierto de @marinaherlop . ¿Por que no se cantan las canciones nominadas en la ceremonia de los Goya? Esta semana en mi newsletter hablo un poco de los Goya y lo que representa la música dentro de la gala y los premios. Este año las canciones nominadas eran Eco de @xoellopezoficial, Yo solo quiero amor de @rigobertabandini Rigoberta Bandini, La gallineta de Fernando Moresi @f.m.haberman , El amor de Andrea de @vetustamorla Vetusta Morla y @valeria.c y Chinas de @marinaherlop. Pero en lugar de ver y escuchar estas canciones en la gala, este año se optó, como ya viene siendo tradición en las últimas ediciones, por actuaciones de otros artistas más conocidos para cantar versiones de canciones conocidas. No digo que algunas actuaciones no fueran maravillosas, que lo fueron, como la de @silviaperezcruzzzzz ,@salvadorsobral.music y @martaromamusic, pero creo que hubiese sido un lujazo poder ver y escuchar a estos artistas nominados interpretando su musica en directo. Finalizamos nuestra sección dedicada a las canciones de los Goya 2024; con una tema que siendo la última nos sorprende igualmente, original propuesta encontramos este año tan Indie; nos ha encantado escuchar a @rigobertabandini , @xoellopezoficial o @vetustamorla con @valeria.c (forman parte de nuestros grupo de artistas por referencia, que dan sentido a nuestro proyecto). “Chinas”, título directo y seco de @arantxa_echevarria con la música de @marinaherlop , una artista experimental hasta el punto que la llaman @bjork española, tanto la nominan a los Goya como telonera de @g_dspeedyoublackemperor en Nueva York; con esa carta de presentación, solo te puede esperar un desafío para tus sentidos, sus 3 minutos de canción fluyen entre susurros, silbidos y sonidos experimentales que nos hacen entrar en su creación. Vulnerability, majesty, and candour elicited with drone, double bass, field recordings and sacred choral chant compose its private ritual. Born out of excavations and explorations in feeling, intuition and physicality through sound which culminated in her 2021 EP 'Feral Hymns', 'Acts Of Light' is a disquiet personal offering to wilderness, loss, absence, mystery and love supreme. Its resonant, rich and weighted lament is both subterranean and chasmal whilst simultaneously detailed and tender, awakening hidden forms that emerge from the shadows with each listen. MARINA HERLOP is often described as a pianist, a lingering remnant of her classical training. But what strikes the listener on HERLOP’s breakout track "miu" is the intricate trickery of her voice, tracing rhythmical clusters around the subtlest of musical beds, in a technique inspired by Carnatic music of Southern India. "miu", the opening track of HERLOP’s new studio album 'Pripyat' on @pan__hq was among the first songs that the young Catalan artist made on a computer, after two albums - 2016’s 'Nanook' and 2018’s 'Babasha' - that brought spectral elegance to the sound of piano and voice.
