Er schreibt am Band 73 seiner umfangreichen Oconomisch Encyclopädie, genauer am Artikel zum Stichwort "Leiche" als Johann Georg Krünitz 1796 stirbt. Ein Schlaganfall hatte den 68jährigen ereilt, der seit nunmehr 23 Jahren unermüdlich daran gearbeitet hatte, das Wissen seiner Zeit systematisch zusammenzutragen. Krünitz (1728-1796) entstammte einer Berliner Kaufmannsfamilie und hatte in Göttingen bei Albrecht von Haller Physiologie, Anatomie und Botanik studiert, bevor er zunächst als Arzt in Berlin praktizierte. Seine Interessen sind äußerst vielseitig und so wächst seine private Bibliothek bis zu seinem Tod auf die beachtliche Zahl von 15.000 Bänden an (Katalog der Bibliotheca Krünitziana, 1797). Die monumentale Enzyklopädie geht auf den Wunsch des Verlegers Joachim Pauli (1733-1812) zurück nach einer Übersetzung der im Schweizerischen Yverdon 1771/72 erschienen "Encyclopédie oeconomique ou System général d'Oeconomique rustique". Von diesem Plan lösten sich Pauli als Verleger und Krünitz als Übersetzer allerdings mehr und mehr, so dass bereits bei Krünitz Tod 72 Bände vorhanden waren. It’s #marbledmonday ! A wet bank holiday weekend seems like a good time to make some marbled papers to replenish my stash. I have mixed feelings about marbled paper- preferring to use it in very small quantities as a design element (see previous post), rather than as full-on covering for a book or endpapers. Late 1890s through early 1910s editions of ‘The Inland Printer’ a technical journal devoted to the art of printing, published in Chicago. Today we are highlighting the beautiful marbled endpapers as well as some advertisements. Milwaukee Public Library holds a run of the periodical from 1884-1958. Marbled Monday This week's example of marbling is used in the binding of 'Poems by Goldsmith and Parnell' printed by W. Bulmer of the Shakespeare Printing Office in 1795. English printer and typographer William Bulmer (1757-1830) established the Shakespeare Press in 1790 and published over 600 volumes during its operation. Irish poet, novelist, and playwright Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774) was a poor student but a good writer, especially noted for his pastoral style. English-Irish poet and clergyman Thomas Parnell (1679-1718) is considered one of the "Graveyard Poets," whose work often contained ruminations on mortality and were considered precursors to the Romantic and Gothic movements. Goldsmith wrote a biography of Parnell that was often published with collections of the latter's works. The binding of this book shows great attention to detail. The marbled paper is, I believe, a Stormont Pattern in red, ten, green, and black. The corners and spine are covered with dark green goatskin featuring gold tooling and the title stamped on the spine. The corners and the edges of the goatskin leather covering the spine have a blind-tooled design on them. This #marbledmonday is from Anticipation, a satirical pamphlet by playwright Richard Tickell. The subject was the matter of the ongoing developments with the American colonies and the debates that would no doubt ensue, which proved to be hilariously popular. Published before Parliament was to meet in 1778, it apparently mimicked the writing style of some politicians of the day so well that “the House burst into a roar of laughing” when they finally met at the Palace of Westminster. The marbling, though obviously modern, is a French Curl pattern. A medley of greens, red, white, gray, and orange. Other than minor foxing and spotting, the work does not have any ornamentation other than the marbled covers. So there are no headpieces, tailpieces, engravings, finis, or tapered columns to report. The humor within was apparently more than interesting enough to its publishers. This is a first edition of Symonds's poem 'The Escorial', recited in The Theatre, Oxford, on 20 June 1860, and for which he won the Newdigate Prize. El Escorial is a remarkable piece of Renaissance architecture that was begun in 1563 and took almost 21 years to complete. It is the burial site for most of the Spanish kings. The opening stanza of Symonds's poem weaves a vivid picture, blending art with nature to reveal the everduring spectre of the royal palace: "Watching from Guadarrama's iron steep The tardy morn along the valley creep, Robed with dark pines I saw beneath me spread Escorial's cloistered palace of the dead. Deep in that dark which ushers in the day The sombre piles of ashy granite lay, And swelled by mists that from the valley steamed Like Brocken's ghost, a giant phantom seemed."

Closing ceremony at the @johnccampbellfolkschool is always bittersweet. This week flew by! Full of laughs and learning - and for me, a healthy dose of humility and patience.
