Good morning. New Sweden - Nya Sverige was a short lived Swedish colony along rhe lower reaches of the Delaware River, in the present-day USA. It existed between 1638 and 1655 with Fort Christina (after the Queen) as its capital and was settled by c. 600 Swedes and Finns, with some Dutchmen and Germans for good measure. The colony grew tobacco and traded furs with the Lenape People. The Etnografiska Museet in Stockholm has an interesting section on the North American First Nations, among which a small collection of items from the New Sweden colony. #newsweden #nyasverige #lenape #firstnations #americanindians #indigenouspeoples #indians #ethnographicmuseum #ethnography #art #dailyart #arthistory #artnews #museum #history

23.05.2024 [Manahahtáanung or New Amsterdam? The Indigenous Story Behind New York] Photo: A phantasmagorical history of Manhatta Island Strawberry Fields 2024, artist patricia kaersenhout. @patriciakaersenhout @amsterdammuseum 400 years ago the first Dutch colonists arrived in the area known today as New York. Their mission given by the Dutch West India Company was to establish the colony of New Netherlands, with New Amsterdam as its capital, at the southern tip of what is today the island of Manhattan. The Amsterdam Museum has joined with the Museum of the City of New York and representatives of the Lenape —original inhabitants of this area of the United States— in creating an exhibition about this shared history. The impetus for this collaboration and the exhibition is that 2024 marks 400 years since the Dutch arrived in America to establish a colony at the mouth of the Hudson River. After the colony was conquered by the English in 1664, the following centuries saw the settlement grow into the city of New York. The Dutch invasion and decades-long colonization of the area in the 17th century had tremendous consequences for the Indigenous people who lived in the region, and on the island which they called Manahahtáanung. Not only did they lose their land, they were victims of disease, war, and the disappearance of their own livelihoods. The colonists deliberately made it impossible for Indigenous peoples to maintain their way of life and culture. Despite this, Indigenous communities have consistently resisted these changes, even up until the present moment. For this exhibition, the Amsterdam The leadership of the four Lenape nations—the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation, the Ramapough Lenape Indian Nation, the Munsee-Delaware Nation and Eelunaapeewi-Lahkeewiit (Delaware Nation)—selected a number of individuals to formulate the exhibition jointly with the two museums. #lenape #newyork

⚡ Aanii Boozhoo, Koolamalsi, Shé-kon! My name is Ant Head. I am an indigenous traditional handpoke tattoo practicioner, urban farmer, and father from Detroit, Michigan. I am turtle clan, a registered Lenni Lenape to the Moraviantown reservation (Bucktown), and have blood and family connections to the Mohawk, Onondaga, and Anishinaabe. I began my handpoke tattooing practice in 2017 and have been offering it as a service to my communities ever since. I frequently travel up to Ontario, Canada to tattoo at various native events such as pow wows, fundraisers, and indiginous tattoo gatherings on First Nations reservations. Traditional Handpoke is a very spiritual practice and ceremony to me that I have soo much love for. I work to bring healing and connection to all those whom I work with through this service to my communities in a good way ~ I am also of Celtic / Scandanavian blood and honor those ways of design and process as well. I am happy and honored to incorporate any associated traditional cultural ways of your peoples medicine from all nations, colors, and creed into my practice. I have my own designs usually on hand to inspire some ideas, but am flexible enough to design and create something for you specifically on the spot. Looking foreward to connecting ⚡️ Anushiik, Miigwetch, Nya-weh, Yaw^kowa - #handpokeartist #tattooartist #lenape #anishinaabe #haudensaunee

🎙️New podcast alert 🎙️ When the Dutch colonists set foot on the island of Manhattan, four hundred years ago, there were already people living there: the Lenape. The first episode of my new podcast series Future 400 features an engaging conversation with the renowned historian, @russell_shorto. He curated an enlightening exhibition for the New York Historical Society, focusing on focusing on the often unheard voices in the history of New Amsterdam. At his invitation, the Lenape community composed a heartfelt letter to an Unknown Ancestor, read in the podcast by Brent Stonefish. Moreover, we had the honor of interviewing Pauline Toole, the Commissioner of Records in New York, who shared captivating anecdotes from the 17th-century archives, offering valuable insights into the diverse cultures and beliefs of the residents of New Amsterdam. 📷️ Grandmother Clara Soaring Hawk, member of the Lenape tribe, chanting at the launch of the Future 400 cultural program Available wherever you get your podcasts. Produced in collaboration with @johnadamsnl, @dutchcultureusa, @nlintheusa, and @nyhistory. #Future400 #tracymetztalks #podcast #NewYork #DutchCultureUSA #Manhattan #Lenape #history @brentish75

My Big News! Tomorrow morning my new podcast is going live: FUTURE400. It is a 4-part series for the Dutch consulate in New York, marking the fact with @dutchcultureusa that it is four centuries ago this year that Dutch settlers set foot on Manhattan. As director of the @johnadamsnl and maker of this podcast, it is my job and my privilege to show what that relationship still means today. In the first episode, 'New York Before New York'. I talk with historian @russell_shorto and Commissioner of Records for #NYC Pauline Toole. I suggest that from now on we call her 'Commissioner of Stories'. And now, finally, the Lenape tribe is part of the story, with a reading by Brent Stonefish (@brentish75 ) and a chant by Grandmother Clara Soaring Hawk. And many thanks to producer Jonathan Groubert (@sircampalot1) ! #history #culture #USA #Netherlands #Lenape

There are significant transitions to notice. Located at Pier 55 in Hudson River Park, W 13th St., New York, ‘Little Island’ is a notable landmark of Chelsea, NYC. Commissioned by businessman Barry Diller, it opened on May 21, 2021, offering open facilities and free spaces accessible daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. It holds historical significance as the landing site of explorer Henry Hudson, who discovered the Hudson River, once inhabited by Native American tribes known as the ‘River Indians’. Today, it serves as a nature-nurturing attraction, featuring lush plantations, performance halls, and harmonious art installations, making it a popular destination for New York tourists and adding to the city’s dynamic histories. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Another transition involves shifting the focus from representing meatpacking to spotlighting the queer and LGBTQ+ community. After the meatpacking businesses lessened, the neighborhood then became home to marginalized communities seeking affordable housing, including Queer identities, with establishments like the famous BDSM club ‘Mineshaft’ and diner ‘The Florent’ occupying the space briefly. They are both closed today however, they represent the pioneers of pursuing diversity and the popularization of the queer community. This new accommodation became a new identity of the area, where people of all identity and feel solidarity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Photo - 1. • To the Algonquian dialects spoken in the valley of Hudson’s River at the time of the discovery, was added later the Mohawk-Iroquorian, to some extent, more particularly on the north, where it appears about 1621-6, as indicated in the blanket deed given by the Five Nations to King George in 1726. Territorially, in the primary era of European invasion, the Bastern Algonquian pre- DREARY EDIANETIONS vailed, in varying idioms, on both sides of the river, from a northern point to the Katskills, and from thence south to the Highlands a type of the Unami-Minst-Lenape or Delaware. That spoken around New York on both sides of the river, was classed by the early Dutch writers as Manhattands distinguished from dialects in the Highlands and from the Savano or dialects of the East New England COSSE North of the Highlands on both sides of the river, they classed the dinlect as Wapping, and from the Katskills north as Mahican or Mohegan, preserved in part in what is known as the Stockbridge, Presumably the dialects were more or less mixed and formed as a whole what may be termed “ The Hudson’s River Dia-lect.” radically Lenape or Delaware, as noted by Governor Tryon in 1774. In local names we seem to meet the Upper-Unami and the Minsi of New Jersey, and the Mohegan and the Natick of the north and east, the Quiripi of the Sound, and the dialect of the Connecticut Valley. In the belt of country south of the Katskills they were sott and vocalic, the lingual mute r frequently appearing and r taking the place of the Eastern I and n. In the Mins (Del.) Zeisberger wrote I invariably, as distinguished from r, which appears in the earliest local names in the valley of the Hudson. 🪶🗿📚🌊🖼️ #HudsonRiver #Dialect #Algonquin #Lenape #Delaware #Lenapehoking #Wappinger #Tappan #Taino #Raritan #Iroquois #Quiripi #Pequot #Unami #Katskil #Monsey #Munsee #Minsi #DelawareRiver #HackensackRiver #PassaicRiver

Today, educators from the Delaware Tribe of Indians from Oklahoma demonstrated traditional Lenape culture for more than 400 students attending our William Penn's World educational program. Students learned about Lenape ceremonial clothing, heard the legend of how squirrels were created, and joined our guests in a Lenape bean dance. In addition, the educators described the history of their ancestors' forced removal from their homeland, beginning with William Penn's sons and the infamous Walking Purchase. The story of the Lenape and the Penn children's role in it is not a happy one. However, we are dedicated to educating students about history: good, bad, or indifferent. The Lenape's story is also one of resilience as their communities continue to thrive in places throughout North America, including Oklahoma. It was an honor to host members of Pennsylvania's first people and to have them share their culture with students! #Lenape #PHMC #pennsylvaniahistory #historicsite #LearningBeyondTheClassroom

Eghquhous was a vast wilderness in the 17th century; owned and occupied by the Lenape people. By the 1660s, it was known as Staaten Eylandt. This weekend, I wandered Staten Island exploring its past relics. Staten Island has seen so much Dutch, English, and American history. Off of Arthur Kill Road is home to the Blazing Star Cemetery. It stands in the middle of the Staten Island boat graveyard and a car wash. Some of the first European settlers of this Island are buried here. I must confess that it is spooky and intriguing. 👻 #statenisland #nyc #newyork #history #cemetery #graves #tombstones #indigenous #lenape #dutch #french #american #america #boroughs #island #mysterious #ghosts #historical #newyorkcity

Next week, the @amsterdammuseum will open an exhibition about the early history of New Netherland - the region that would later become New York - and particularly its indigenous inhabitants, such as the Lenape. This Dutch map, made in 1684, shows many of the indigenous names of the area, and gives an impression of its indigenous villages. Images of such villages had been in print in Europe for several decades, mostly based on drawings by early English visitors of the region, including John White. #newyork #Lenape #oldmaps

🇳🇱🇺🇲 NYC’s 400th anniversary 1624-2024 | 1639 & today: An overview of the NYC metro area. . In early May 1624, (the exact date is unknown) a Dutch West India Company ship, the Nieuw Nederlandt, entered present-day New York harbor after over a month at sea. On board were 30 families composed mostly of Protestant Walloons & Flemish hailing from present-day Belgium who primarily sought a place in the New World where they could live free from religious persecution. The site they chose was a small island which the indigenous Lenape called Pagganuk or “Nut Island” due to its abundance of hickory, oak, & chestnut trees. Called Noten Eylandt by the Dutch, it was later Anglicized to Nutten Island. Today, it is called Governors Island. . Seen above is Manatus Map (1639), the oldest surviving map to feature all 5 future boroughs of the future NYC. Its author is, sadly, unknown. Though the map does contain some errors such as grossly underestimating the size of Staten Island, it’s remarkable how truly accurate it is, especially for its time. In 1625, the Dutch moved to the southern tip of Manhattan (Mannahatta in Lenape) to lay the groundwork for the city of New Amsterdam. The Lenape were largely successful in limiting further Dutch expansion in the area but they would never again truly possess their former lands and would ultimately be driven off. 400 years on & the small Dutch settlement has blossomed into one of the world’s largest cities with over 8 million residents & nearly 20 million living in the greater metro area. It’s a city which has impacted the lives of countless millions around the globe. As we celebrate this historic occasion, let us also be mindful and not forget those who were here long before us & give them the respect they weren’t afforded centuries ago. May New York continue striving to be a place where all are welcome and may it thrive for another 400 years. . . . #oldmaps #oldnyc #17thcentury #nychistory #newamsterdam #nyc #thewaywewere #newnetherland #oldnewyork #newyorkhistory #newyork #vintagenyc #oldmap #nycnostalgia #400thanniversary #nieuwamsterdam #vintagenewyork #newyorkcity #dutchempire #governorsisland #lenape #nycbeforeandafter

7 Av (F/G) station features mosaic artwork by David Rios Ferreira, titled “Landscapes adrift—cosmically woven and earthly bonded”, commissioned by @mtaartsdesign . Installed within twelve niches and the North Mezzanine Passageway, the artwork incorporates elements of science-fiction, the natural world, architecture, and history… Ferreira drew inspiration from the snapping turtles and red-eared sliders that inhabit the park. These turtles hold significance in creation stories shared by Indigenous peoples such as the Lenape and those of the Northeastern Woodlands…where the earth is believed to be carried on the back of a giant turtle. Building upon this narrative and drawing from his own Taíno heritage (the Indigenous people of the Caribbean), Ferreira’s artwork seeks to bridge present-day concepts of home with a shared cultural connection to the planet across time. ______________________________________ @davidriosart #davidriosart #davidriosferreira #mta #mtasubway #mtaarts #mtartsanddesign #nycsubway #subwaymosaic #mosaic #nycart #artnyc #brooklyn #artinbrooklyn #turtle #turtles #lenape #taino 📸: @yeonjiyoo 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Are you an anthropology/archaeology student? Do you want a means to share your research? We here at ASNJ want to share what you have been working so hard on! So, if you’re a student and want to share what you have been up to, whether it be a thesis paper, project, internship, presentation, or something similar! Send it our way! Email it to us using the link in the bio or message us. All we ask is that you send pictures of yourself, your research, and a brief summary. OR Create an Instagram post with a short summary of what you’ve been researching, we’ll share it! Our first subject of this new initiative is Julie Foy, an anthropology major from Rowan University. Over the past few months, Julie has been interning at the Alan E. Museum of Prehistory in Greenwich, NJ, under curator Richard Adamczyk, learning all about the Lenni-Lenape in NJ and museum studies. Her research centered around cataloging, identifying, and accessioning Lenape artifacts and learning about the Ancestral Lenape, culminating in designing her own exhibit case about the Late Woodland Period and presenting it. Allowing her research to reach the public eye and educate those visiting the museum to years to come! With the conclusion of her internship and graduation on the horizon, we wish Julie luck and congratulations! NJ always needs new up and coming archaeologists. See you in a test pit everyone! -ASNJ Student Committee #digasnj #nj #njarchaeology #newjersey #lenape #anthropology #archaeology #cumberlandcounty

[Galvanizing] Since my visit to #Ohlone territory 3 moons ago, I realized that I REALLY need to learn more history south of the 🇨🇦/🇺🇸 settler border. 🌁🤔😯 So, leading up to—and immediately following—that trip, I ordered some books. 📚😌👌 And as some of you know, I was in New York for the first time ever. 🥹🗽 So, this necessitated expanding my learning to include #Lenape territory and history. I was able to FINALLY get a book I noticed on my visit to Ohlone territory (that I was too broke to buy at the time 😭), but it was actually VERY difficult to find any Lenape-focused books (I searched 6 different bookstores, including a 4-storey Barnes & Noble... it took going to 2 different museums to find some 😓😒). I am learning that both territories—Ohlone and Lenape—have faced #colonization for quite a long time. The extent of erasure both have endured—and continue to endure—is pretty heartbreaking. 😔💔 On a personal note, I feel like my decolonial “🇺🇸” learning will come from these 3 perspectives: 1. From Ohlone territory eastward 🌁🌴➡️, 2. From Lenape territory westward ⬅️🌲🗽, and 3. From Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot/Blackfeet) & Oceti Sakowin territories southward 🦬🌾⬇️. I thought this was a little “backward” at first, but maybe this is how it should be: as a #Cree from the northern #plains (as an aside: my learning of my own people’s history is also “backward”: east and northward towards the Hudson Bay). This is just me situating/grounding myself in my context. 🏙🦬🌾 Having shared all that, here are the books I have bought… 1. The Rediscovery of America by Ned Blackhawk 2. Unworthy Republic by Claudio Saunt 3. First Manhattans by Robert S. Grumet 4. On the Turtle’s Back by Camilla Townsend and Nicky Kay Michael 5. Mannahatta by Eric W. Sanderson 6. Indians, Franciscans, and Spanish Colonization by Robert H. Jackson and Edward Castillo 7. A Time of Little Choice by Randall Milliken 8. Indians, Missionaries, and Merchants by Kent G. Lightfoot 9. The Ohlone Past and Present by Lowell John Bean I will share the links to the books in my stories. 😌📚🔗👌

So proud of Beatrice Glow who showed ultimate skill, stamina but most of all creative vision with her beautiful exhibit When Our Rivers Meet. Organized by curator material culture Rebecca Klassen from the New York Historical Society. Very honored to be a collaborator in this strong and beautiful project with @manu2u. (And while we were there, who do we bump into? Noraly Beyer of course. 🙌🏽) From the @nyhistory webtext: Drawing on research into New-York Historical’s vast Museum and Library collections, artist-in-residence Beatrice Glow reckons with the 400th anniversary of the establishment of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam from local and global perspectives. Working in conversation with a group of culture bearers, artists, and scholars whose heritages were impacted by the Dutch colonial enterprise, Glow is creating a series of seven parade float maquettes that envision an alternative commemoration. The small VR-sculpted and 3D-printed sculptures will be complemented by Glow’s interpretations of decorative arts collection objects, such as embroidered textiles and gilded baby rattles that reflect ideas of social and cultural power. Project participants: @raulbalai, @nativetec Tecumseh Ceaser, @debjack0, Nancy Jouwe, @vincent.mann.940 Chief Vincent Mann, Michaeline Picaro Mann, Wim Manuhutu, @brentish75 , @rrbbgenealogy Teresa Vega. #Dutchcolonialism #Banda #NewAmsterdam #DutchNewYork #Lenape

On May 6, 1626, Manhattan was bought by the Dutch for just 60 guilders. That's about $1,143 by today's standards. 😳 #onthisday #historytoday #manhattan #lenape

history of the name #Nyack 🪶🗿📚 •Naywayack •Narrioch •Nyack •Najag •Najack •Nanak Narrioch was given by the chief who confirmed the title to it in 1643, as the name of what is now known as Coney Island, and Man-nahaning as that of Gravesend Neck, (Thompson’s Hist. L. I., ii, 175.) The Dutch called the former Connen, and the latter Conyne Hoeck-“I Conijen Conine.” Jasper Dankers wrote in 1679: *On the south (of Staten Island) is the great bay, which is enclosed by Najag, t Conijen Island, Neversink,” etc. Conijen (modern Dutch, Konijn), signifies “Rabbit”_Cony, Coney- inferentially “Small”- literally, “Rabbit, or Coney Island,” in Dutch. The Indian names have been transposed, apparently. Mannahaning means “At the island,” and Narrioch is the equivalent of Nayang, “A point or corner,” as in Nyack. • The latter was the Dutch “Conyne Hock.” Judge Benson claimed Conyn as “A Dutch sur-name, from which came the name of Coney, or Conyn’s Island,” but if so, the surname was from “Rabbit” surely. Nyack, the name of the site of Fort Hamilton, is a generic verbal from Nai, “A point or corner.” (Naiag, Mass., Neiak, Len.) The orthographies vary- Naywayack, Narrack, Nanak, Narrag, Najack, Niuck, Narrioch, etc. With the suffix -ak, the name means “Land or place at the point.” (See Nyack-on-the-Hudson.) Dankers and Sluyter wrote in their Journal (1679-80): “We went part of the way through the woods and fine, new-made land, and so along the shore to the west end of the island called Najack. Continuing onward from there, we came to the plantation of the Najack Indians, which was planted with maize, or Turkish Wheat.” • Finna post more bout it later on at some point ( got few receipts here in between all throughout the page) long story short the name Nyack has strong Indigenous Ties to Staten Island, Brooklyn, The Connecticuts - Massachussetts Tribes aswell as the Carribean @historicalindigenoussites @forbiddenheritage @historeal #Nyack #Indians #HiddenHistory #RocklandCounty #PalisadesMall #HudsonRiver #RiverIndians #Historic #PreColumbian #AncientAmerica #Narragansett #Taino #PaperGenocide #IndigenousRights #Pequot #Montauk #Arawak #Manahatta #Algonkin #Lenape

#lenape #indigenouspeople #ny #nj #pa #de #ok #wi #ontoria #brooklyn #botanicgarden #bbg
