Everybody loves to complain about stairs... at least until they're gone. With the Haiku Stairs being removed there's another interesting stairway hike on island and it's Kuliouou ridge. Yeah stairs can be a challenge but you're going to miss them when you're hanging on a rope and you're trying to get a foothold on an eroded mud ridgeline but your feet are going everywhere. That's why I find myself at Kuliouou often. When you want to hike the Ko'olau but the weather is terrible, Kuliouou is usually the safest option. It's a nice hike for other reasons. Switchbacks through pine forest is interesting and a clear view towards the end is always amazing. This hike might not always be the plan, but I'll be happy to be back anyways. PS, be careful at the end. It's tempting to walk to the lower ledge for a photo but it's easy to follow off because of loose gravel. No one is reported to have died on this trail, so don't let yourself be the first.

Let’s meet our 2024 walk leaders... Who’s shared the trail with Gill before? She’s awesome and is always willing to share her stories, knowledge and expertise. Just like Colleen, Gill’s been a part of the Big Heart fam since the early days, so chances are you’ve had the pleasure of her conversation. Gill’s trail list is loooong! She helps out with local walks, Flinders trips, the Larapinta Trail, New Zealand tours, and later this year she’s who will be leading the way with our local guide so that our Everest Adventurers get to Base Camp and back! Gill is pretty much a walking-talking encyclopedia! Our LRCC members Meg and Kat went out on Mother's Day this Sunday to explore the amazing world of AMPHIBIANS. We saw mothers of the people variety and amphibious on our walk-through Belknap Woods. Taking time to carefully lift some logs we got to see Northern-red backed salamanders and a yellow spotted salamander, a pickerel frog, and spotted newt right on the trail! We got to see different egg masses and learn all about vernal pools any why they are important for the amphibian life cycle. Missed out this time? SOLSTICE HIKE ✨ Tuesday 18 June 18.00 - 20.30 Time to share some more details about our next Solstice hike so you know what to expect. ✨🥾 Join us for a wonderful opportunity to reconnect ourselves with the wildness around and within us. ⚡️ We’ll begin at @shala.women in Margate with an opening circle to forge connections amongst the group, then set out for an easy two-hour coastal hike on level terrain, with a pub stop at the awesome @theshakespearemargate (including non-alc options) midway. THE KING IS DEAD LONG LIVE THE KING The King Proteas at the Aqueduct and Smuts Track on Table Mountain just blew me away today. You all remember the fire raging up there just two weeks ago, but just look how beautiful and amazing, the leaves didn't even burn, and I even found some seeds. King Proteas regenerate in two ways after fire, they will release seeds for new young plants to grow from seed, but they are also resprouters and will send new leaves and shoots out from their resilient underground rootstock that is generally not killed by fire. The rootstock can survive for hundreds of years. ♡ GRATITUDE ♡ #capepointtocablecar - 7 May 2024 - Alternative Day 2 When Swartkop, the mountain behind Simonstown, burnt down a few months ago, my heart sank into my shoes. There goes our second day's route, I thought. A few recce hikes later and I'm quite chuffed to say that the new second day is equally dramatic, awe-inspiring and fun. After breakfast in a sea-cave hosting an ancient shell midden, there is an opportunity to swim at the forgotten, quaint little beach at Smitswinkel Bay. Navigating plentiful large boulders awaits as we follow the scenic coastline from Miller's Point to Simonstown. A visit to the Boulder's Penguin Colony is a must have cherry-on-top of a fantastic day of hiking and boulder-scrambling. The day's hard work is rewarded with a scrumptious dinner at one of Simonstown's best kept secret charming restaurants.
