Guess what? We haven't had a microwave in over 6 months. Ours (though less than 2 years old) burnt out sometime last year, and we have yet to replace it. After going so long without one, I don't miss it and don't really care if we ever replace it! Food tastes better cooked & reheated on the stove or in the oven anyway.. nevermind the fact that we tend to eat healthier options and aren't exposing ourselves to whatever side effects come alongside frequent microwave usage. Complete honesty & transparency.. My garden grows weeds, and oftentimes, they get way out of hand before I do anything about them. My coops & barns pile up with poop and flies. My sink overflows with dirty dishes regularly. I avoid doing laundry until we're on the last pair of underwear.. (true story 😅) I say all of this to say: Nobody is perfect. As a content creator, it's easy to share the images of the healthy, vibrant plants.. or a freshly cleaned kitchen in the background of the (finally) perfectly baked loaf of bread. As a viewer, it's easy to see these images and feel unable or disappointed with the current condition of your own. Social media can be a valuable tool for sharing inspiration and encouragement for those who are learning and growing.. and on the other hand, it can easily be a source of resentment and comparison. As I was removing each of these grass plugs (that I didn't plant) from this garden bed, I thought about the many comments that I receive, saying how beautiful and perfect my garden is.. and while I'm appreciative, I know what happens behind the scenes and feel like it's only fair to share that part as well. Don't let the highlight reel discourage you from trying! As a culture, failing is frowned upon. Oftentimes, people give up before they even start. I'm here to tell you.. it's OK to mess up. It's OK to start something without a clue about it. It's OK to ask for help. This is how we learn! If you have a dream, pursue it! Take baby steps. Find honest mentors & community. Make mistakes. Learn from them. Don't give up! I don't enjoy taking an animal's life. In fact, I loathe the process every time. (The smile is a sign of my relief.. read on..) I am also fully aware that there are times that blood must be shed in order to feed or protect our family and farm. We pray before and during every motion that the Lord would guide our hands and help us to be accurate and effective. I literally would not be able to do anything that I do without His help and guidance. After weeks of losing chickens, 10+ within the past week, something had to be done. Hunting a fox is not for the impatient. It has tested me in every way. I wanted to throw in the towel because my body hurt from sitting in strange, still positions for hours. I made a few tries at him and missed, which discouraged me. I have literally chased this fox, barefoot, down a gravel road into the woods to save a chicken from it's mouth.. more than once 😅 But my determination to do whatever it took to protect my flock made me press on. And today, I was victorious! The Lord spoke to me in so many ways throughout the process, and I'm so thankful He saw me through. Hunting for sport will never be for me. It's just not how I'm wired.. But in order to protect & provide for my own, I will do whatever it takes. Even if the process hurts my feelings. What a day.. I haven't had the chance to give the whole story of our sheep over on our YouTube channel.. I plan to, but one of our ewes couldn't wait on me any longer and decided to bless us with our very first lamb today! It was such a beautiful experience for us. Watching Ray have a front row seat to witness such a miracle was the icing on the cake for me. Being able to offer her a hands-on education here on our homestead to prepare her for her future as a vet (or whatever she decides to pursue) makes my heart happy. We will try again tomorrow 🤞🤞 During the chaos of pigs screaming and barreling into the fence, I decided to order pizzas for us onlookers.. to which I accidently had delivered to Discount Tire in town (as that was the last place we used the app to deliver to 😅). Ordered another round of pizzas to the right address this time... shortly followed by a new neighbor stopping by to exchange a few un-neighborly words with us 🙈 Maybe it was one of those things where you had to be there to really feel the madness that ensued, lol Let's just say.. we'll all sleep good tonight! Have you ever made homemade tortillas?? If not, you're missing out! If you're anything like me, reading the ingredient labels on some store bought products makes my skin crawl. The thought of putting ample amounts of foreign "ingredients" into my family's bodies just doesn't sit well with me! (Full disclosure: we still eat junk on occasion) I've been an avid label reader for many years and have made switches wherever I possibly can, but this year, instead of paying double or more for the healthier options, I'm choosing to make more from scratch. Sure, it requires more time and energy.. but isn't that the point?? What we put into our bodies should require thought and intentionality. Though we've gained more time with convenient choices, we've lost so much else along the way. I challenge you to replace one store bought item, with a homemade, from-scratch version.. and see how much better it tastes & how much more rewarding the process and results are. Our chickens do more than just provide us with eggs & meat.. they are also valuable cultivators! They till up the top layer of the soil, scratching and searching for bugs, leave a little 💩, and move onto the next spot. The disturbance of soil breaks up compaction and allows their "contributions" to naturally fertilize and feed the good bacteria, promoting the growth of grass and other forage. Our property has a loooong way to go before considering our soil ideal just yet.. but check out that vibrant, green grass that has filled in where our meat birds were ran this fall 🙌 Little by little.. bit by bit. When the crud hits.. having nutritious, prepared foods on hand is gold. After a night of sinus pain and sore throat, a bowl of homemade eggdrop soup really soothed from head to toe. I used bone broth from the deer we harvested, along with fresh eggs from our gals & chives from the garden.. One of the many things I love about homesteading is the community ❤️ Being able to trade and barter for goods that you and your family need while also filling the need of another family is such a great feeling. This morning, I reached out to a local beekeeper, needing some beeswax to refill the candles that we've burnt down with all of our recent power outages. They asked us if we had any buck rabbits available, which we coincidentally had 1 available that we've been trying to rehome.. so a trade was made! We needed wax. ✔️ They needed a rabbit. ✔️ It's good to have a community that can grow & produce foods, goods, and services. Power has been out for about 4 hours now. We have been managing just fine, with the assistance of a gas stove and candle sticks. Thankfully, our generator is keeping the eggs in our incubator stable as well. It seems the storm has mostly blown over at this point.. we're expecting quite a few limbs and trees down around the property, but from what we tell, there is no significant damage to our structures or vehicles 🙌 We pray that you and yours fared as well or better!
