Three weeks ago we loaded the incubator with our hens eggs. 24 eggs went in, but after candling the eggs the other day (checking if they contain a chick or if they are infertile), sadly only 9 showed life. This evening the first one hatched, with another one pipped (first hole in the shell) When locking up the chickens for the night we checked in the two broody hens who share custody for 5 small eggs. We haven’t told them that there is actually a pheasant egg in the mix, that one might be the first one hatched tonight as well. 🐣 Why a pheasant egg? 5 weeks ✨🌈 5 weeks ago today my little Dinky boy crossed the rainbow bridge. I am starting to be able to talk about him with people without welling up straight away, so I feel that’s progress. I think the majority of my healing so far, has most definitely come from the gift he left me with Lumi though ✨🌟 Lumi is 2 weeks old today ♥️✨ She (still feel she might be a girl) 😂 is the absolute DNA copycat of everything that made us smile and laugh about Dinky with extra sprinkles on top. A little sunshine after that storm that just came through. All is well here at our little farmstead! Found these little two chirping up a storm as the storm was coming in. We attempted to let one of our hens raise a baby she hatched last week. However, some of our other hens are jealous and our birds free range all the time, so it just isn't safe for the babies. Little Silkie to the rescue! During our last hatch, we had a straggler Welsummer cockerel that wasn't doing great. We kept a friend back for him while the others all went to their new home. Sadly, he passed away over the weekend, leaving his friend sad and lonely. And of course, our next batch is set to hatch in a few days, which was too long for this little chick to be alone. Thanks to a very gracious neighbor, we were able to pick up a silkie chick to give our lonely one a friend again. This is probably the ONLY time we will ever have a silkie in our flock. I showed her the chicks, but she was more concerned hanging out with her friends outside. One chick. Two moms. These two have been trying to go broody for months. And both in the same area (the rabbits hut). We kept removing the eggs but with this recent bad weather there was a pile that got forgotten. And when we finally went to clean the area we moved both chickens and this little chick fell out from under one of their wings.
