Gandhara leaves humanity with its lasting treasures. It was a culture spanning parts of modern day Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. It was a mix-mash of European, Indian and Eurasian civilisations that saw conquerors come and go. Alexander the Great passed through here; in his entourage were Greek craftsman who stayed after the collapse of his empire. They passed their skills to the inhabitants of Gandhara who in turn spread this style, Indo-Greek throughout Central and South Asia. From the Greek deities in Europe to the Buddha India’s greatest tradition - the ability to assimilate blooms in Gandhari sculpture. Like most Buddhas, his depicted face tends to have ethnographic diversity; with this one not appearing entirely Asian. The quality of the finished sculptures compares to anything found in Europe - with the only major difference being the lack of marble. ‘Standing Bodhisativa’, which refers to someone on the path towards becoming a Buddha. 2nd century CE from Kabul, Afghanistan. I read a book on the Mahabharata many years ago, it presents dilemma without a clear resolution leaving us to wonder the balance between empathy and practical support. One of them is Gandhari’s choice to blindfold herself for life upon marrying the blind prince Dhritarashtra, that is a powerful act of empathy and solidarity. But this decision raises a profound question: Is it more important to share in a loved one’s pain out of moral integrity, or to become their guiding light to help them navigate and rule better? Gandhari, the princess of Gandhara (now Afghanistan), was known for her wisdom and virtue. Upon learning that her future husband, Dhritarashtra, was blind, she made the extraordinary decision to cover her eyes with a cloth, vowing to live in the same darkness as he did. By choosing to experience the world as her husband did. She believed that true companionship meant sharing not only joys and successes but also the burdens and limitations of her partner. Gandhari’s act of blindfolding herself was a powerful statement of equality and shared destiny. She rejected the idea of living a life of privilege while her husband remained in darkness. Instead, she chose to stand beside him, facing the same challenges and limitations. But, do you think this noble choice also had significant consequences? By blindfolding herself, she limited her ability to actively support and guide her husband.
