Gorgeous 3 year old English bulldog Karla urgently needs her loving foster or forever family❤️ This beauty girl endured more than any dog should ever have to endure. She was left at a high kill shelter in Apple Valley with a prolapsed uterus, a Cherry eye covering most of her right eye. Karla also had a major hernia an was in horrible shape. Karla has been at our vet for a month receiving the vet card she greatly needed and deserved. She had a prolapsed uterus emergency surgery, along with her cherry eye surgery. Then had a hernia surgery, then needed a hernia repair surgery. Karla is finally feeling better and is healing beautifully. She’s a gorgeous English bulldog that must have been used for breeding and then dumped. Who’s black and tan, and fluffy all over? Petal, Azalea, and Magnolia! These sweet girls joined us at our adoption event on Monday and they had such a blast meeting new people and getting lots of attention. They are just 3 of the 7 puppies from their litter who are still looking for their forever homes. They are about 2.5 months old now and weigh just under 20lbs. They likely will be at least 60-70lbs when fully grown. Our best guess is they are Rottweiler/German shepherd mixes. They are looking for individual forever homes with families willing to dedicate the time to continue their training and socialization. She’s short and wittle, and so sooooo cute. She’s only on the list for length of stay and has no negative staff notes. The catch? She’s HW+, but I’m really hoping that doesn’t deter anyone from helping her. She greeted me with a wagging tail, and although it took her a minute, she did a good girl sit. I think she was in the early stances of pregnancy before she was spayed, because she’s got some hanging nips. When I sat down, she immediately came in for affection. She started giving me kisses, and when I gave her butt scritches in return, she laid belly up to give me better access. She closed her eyes, just soaking it all in. 😭 She took treats gently, leashed and walked easy, and kept looking at me for reassurance. Outside she met Irving with me, and was friendly - all tail wags. Other volunteers tried her with a very playful pup and in the videos she first seems startled and not sure how to react to him, but starts running up and down the fenceline with him after a bit. Finn & Franklin’s mom here with a plug about fostering dogs in your city 💜. We’ve been fostering for a year - it’s messy, challenging, exhausting, rewarding, fulfilling, and bittersweet when puppies go on transport or to their forever home. Fostering keeps a dog out of the shelter, leaving room for another to have a safe place to sleep. You get to teach them, love them & make them more adoptable. I am so thankful @furdelisa helped me get into fostering. Late April - I saw a post about 2 5/6 week old orphan puppies that were still at the shelter. I headed down to tunica and picked up the cutest, tiniest little puppies. It was love at first sight for @nataliejhouston & within hours the questions were flowing, tentative plans to watch Ginny during vacation & lastly talking to her husband 🤣🤣. 💜 Application was submitted & approved & the crazy cousin crew was coming to Memphis the next weekend to meet their new pup and take her home. Ginny is back with us for a vacation &Franklin is beyond happy that his little baby is back. Meet Bowser a 2-year-old French Bulldog who was surrendered by his previous owner due to reported aggression. However, in his current foster home, he has not shown any signs of aggression and has been a loving companion.He loves to play with his foster siblings and enjoys basking in the sun and occasional humping. Treats are his thing and he is well trained with basic commands and also potty trained. Bowser has zero medical issues and will be vet cleared before adoption. With his foster dad he enjoys going to the gym and hanging out. He tries to bench press but he typically ends up just chillen and admiring himself in the mirror while flexing. We would prefer for him to go to a home with other dismissive canine companions as he is a little more hyperactive and not always on chill mode. Bowser has been great with his foster siblings and loves to play with them but with the females he tends to get into humping mode. As of now we are working on stopping that but there are no guarantees. Bowser thrives on human interaction and being close to his family. He will do best in a home that understands his need for close companionship and can provide a stable, loving environment. Bowser is a loving, affectionate French Bulldog who is ready to bond closely with his new family. Despite his past, he has shown that he can be a sweet and devoted companion. We would like to place him in his new home as soon as possible so he isn’t dependent on his foster home and then has to go through another transition with a chance to be reactive. A most deserved respite for my girl April. She’s gone to foster and this pic was sent on her first night. It literally fills my heart. After struggling in the shelter for at least a year, one of my first girl crushes from my first days as a volunteer, this restful, peaceful sleep makes me so happy. I feel like a proud papa. I was there when the foster family loaded her into their car last night and I felt like a dad watching his child leave for camp for the first time: proud and anxious. I hope with all I have that this foster fails and she becomes the newest addition to their home. Sweet Betty was abandoned and left outside of the Petsmart Heartland location in box, with no human in sight. Not to long after getting Betty settled in, we could tell she was in distress 🥺 After receiving medical care it was shown that her intestines were completely impacted, likely due to very very poor quality food and neglect for a long time 😔 Thankfully, Betty got the medical care she needed and is doing much better now. This girl has been through so much trauma and despite that, she is SUCH a sweet girl 🩵 Betty is currently in foster care, receiving all the love she deserves. But we NEED to find her, her forever home, as her fosters cannot keep her, though they wish they could and have nothing but nice words to say about her!🥰 A word from her foster: “Betty is the quirkiest monkey out there cosplaying as a cat. Day Twenty Two: School We have missed posting for a few days because of travel, but don’t worry, we’re back! School can honestly be a relief sometimes. An eight hour break from the constant demands of parenthood. I’ve even found myself actually looking forward to Mondays on occasion! School can also be a source of incredible stress for a foster parent. Getting calls from teachers and principals about difficult behaviors from your child that you don’t know how to handle. Behaviors that are a result of real trauma. It can feel hopeless, like you’ve tried everything possible. I would encourage the foster parent, or any parent to advocate for the needs of your child. Find “your people” at the school who understand trauma and are committed to seeing your child succeed. That may be a teacher, school counselor, principal, or librarian, whoever gives abundant grace and sees their beauty in the midst of brokenness. ROSEMARY is another sad statistic of the Houston homeless pet overpopulation problem. Someone called animal control to report a sick dog lying in their yard. She was covered in fleas and had no food or water. She did not even move when they came to pick her up. Due to her medical condition, Rosemary was quickly added to the shelter kill-list. She was already in line to be euthanized when we rescued her. Rosemary has a lot of issues including generalized areas of alopecia, missing and thinning hair, sarcoptic mange, open sores, crusting & thickening of her skin, chronic ear infection, heartworm positive, and more. Rosemary is estimated to be around 6 years old and 21 lbs and has the biggest brown eyes that will melt your heart! She is a bit timid, but who can blame her. Humans have not been kind to her. She is currently at the vet getting the necessary medical care, and will be looking for a foster or forever home once better. Let’s show Rosemary that life can be good! If you have it in your heart to provide her a loving home, please let us know, or if you can spare even a little to help with her medical bills, we would be most grateful. Meet Willis, our newest HCCC resident! Before his arrival, he was found abandoned on a highway and left to die. His foster dad initially drove past him, but a little voice in his head made him turn around. He discovered Willis lying on the shoulder between the northbound lanes. It took 45 agonizing minutes to coax Willis to safety. He couldn't ignore the voice saying he had to save Willis from the busy highway, especially in a dangerous spot. Thanks to their efforts, his life was saved. Initially, Willis was very growly and defensive, which made his rescuers nervous. When they arrived at their destination, he was extremely agitated, snapping at the crate anytime anyone came near. They had to back the truck into their backyard, shut the gate, and carefully unlatch the crate so he could come out on his own terms. After nearly three weeks of patience and love, Willis began to open up. He has made significant progress, warming up to men more quickly than women. He gets along well with female dogs, but they are still testing him with male dogs. Like typical chows, it takes him a bit to bond and trust the right people. However, once he knows you, his personality shines through, and he loves to cuddle and lay his head on you. They are still assessing if he gets along with kids. As rabbits age, it may be necessary to make changes to their environment, especially for rabbits with burgeoning mobility issues. For example; Some rabbits will have significant hind end mobility issues, as well as arthritis in their front paws. Rolled rugs/bumpers made good cushioning, often needed to prop themselves up, to help relieve pressure on backs and paws. Encourage your bunny to exercise. As your bunny ages, s/he will become less active. It’s important that you push them to move to stimulate both body and mind. This can be accomplished via puzzles and mazes. Place rugs and carpets around your house. Padded, nonslip rugs and carpets provides a softer space where your rabbit can walk and hop around. Make sure your rabbit is not stressed. Stress isn’t good for any living being including our rabbits. They can experience a fatal heart attack when scared and the chances increase with age. It important to keep their areas free from stress; calm and quiet. A daily routine helps to prevent stress too. Pet them often and check for any physical changes Most bunnies love to be pet and as they age they become more needy. Pet and massage them often as it de-stresses them. While loving on your bunny, check for new lumps or bumps, and any tight muscles or swelling. Joint support supplements are often helpful to an aging bun. It is important for rabbits to have companions, especially as they age. Companions help keep one another mentally and physically engaged, they offer comfort and cuddles, and can help with grooming those areas that aren't as easy to reach when one becomes older and a bit arthritic.
