Apple pressing is a wonderful time of year. A community event from harvest to pressing that celebrates the changing of seasons from summer to autumn. Food is something that we share, something that brings us together and connects us. Even today, we gather around a table for meals, or exchange gifts of cake, wine, or beer. Events in the calendar often come with their customary food, specially made or bought only once a year. In olden days, orchards were a thing of abundance and celebration, sacred in a similar way to the citrus groves of the world. But due to a variety of factors, they’ve been neglected or removed from large parts of the British countryside, with most people only experiencing the flavour of chemically preserved fruits from abroad. Like most of the modern world we live in, a system of convenience has been sold to us over one of substance, and we are paying the price for it. Much like the crop of wheat, apple and pears require group activity to harvest and process. These fundamental crops drove entire communities to pause their daily lives and gather for harvest. Here, we have a much smaller operation, but still a group of us gather each year in order to harvest, wash, prepare, crush and press the various heritage apples growing in Steven’s orchard. This year, we have each taken the juice of different apples home to turn into single variety ciders, using wild fermentation of the yeasts present in the orchard and natural sugars of the fruit. I’ll share more about that another time, but for this video I wanted to share with you the tradition so we can welcome the changing of the seasons together. A special thank you to Steven and Huw, and everybody else who helped for day one of apple pressing. Broken Spoke Cider Company - Ciderita 📍Edmonton, Alberta 🍏Semi-sweet, tart, citrusy, light, and bright 🍏There is a dominant lime flavour but you can still taste the apple 🍏The flavour starts bold and tart, but becomes light very quickly, 4.5% abv ✅8/10 This cider is so interesting! It’s got a clear but light lime aroma, which definitely comes through in the forefront of the flavour when you first taste it. Even though it’s citrus forward, it’s not overly acidic and it’s very delicate, and actually has a clear drop in flavour towards the aftertaste. All you get is a lingering lime without any notable sweetness on the palate in the finish. This offering here comes in at 5.1% ABV and pours a cloudy-esque (new word of the day) bright red colour. In terms of aroma it smells mostly like apple. Apple pressing is a wonderful time of year. A community event from harvest to pressing that celebrates the changing of seasons from summer to autumn. Food is something that we share, something that brings us together and connects us. Even today, we gather around a table for meals, or exchange gifts of cake, wine, or beer. Events in the calendar often come with their customary food, specially made or bought only once a year. In olden days, orchards were a thing of abundance and celebration, sacred in a similar way to the citrus groves of the world. But due to a variety of factors, they’ve been neglected or removed from large parts of the British countryside, with most people only experiencing the flavour of chemically preserved fruits from abroad. Like most of the modern world we live in, a system of convenience has been sold to us over one of substance, and we are paying the price for it. Much like the crop of wheat, apple and pears require group activity to harvest and process. These fundamental crops drove entire communities to pause their daily lives and gather for harvest. Here, we have a much smaller operation, but still a group of us gather each year in order to harvest, wash, prepare, crush and press the various heritage apples growing in Steven’s orchard. This year, we have each taken the juice of different apples home to turn into single variety ciders, using wild fermentation of the yeasts present in the orchard and natural sugars of the fruit. I’ll share more about that another time, but for this video I wanted to share with you the tradition so we can welcome the changing of the seasons together. A special thank you to Steven and Huw, and everybody else who helped for day one of apple pressing. cider and a song 5/3/24 originally this was a post about stormalong cider and their brand new cider — blue skies at night. and i was so bedecked in bruins gear. blueberries, bruins. but my boys let me down tonight so i don’t feel much like posting my jersey rn. womp womp. so this is rather a post about one of my favorite cider producers who happen to be based in rhode island which is where @bullpupband is playing tomorrow. that is, of course, @sowamsciderworks. this, like most of their ciders, is an incredibly bold single varietal. yum. this one is ashmead’s kernel. an apple i love to have in cider but don’t think i’ve ever had on its own. i love a learning experience. pours a clear straw color with little effervescence. smells like stone and hay and peach and black tea. tastes! delicious. but also. of oak and straw and honey and oak and leather. very little sweetness and full of tannins. just a hoot of a cider. i love a floral and bitter cider maybe most of all! new @theframers_sb goes so unbelievably hard. new framers! all bangers! #cider #ciders #ciderlover #cidergram #hardciders #hardcider #hardciderlover

Shale Ridge Winery and Cidery - Cherrilicious 📍Thedford, Ontario 🍎Semi-sweet, fruity, juicy, tart, and bright 🍎Primarily tart cherry forward, both on the nose and tongue 🍎Some apple comes in the aftertaste, but it’s subtle, 5% abv ✅9.5/10 This cider has a perfectly natural tart cherry flavour that makes you forget that there is a mild sweetness in the overall profile. It’s honestly got the perfect balance of cherry with apple (which comes through in the aftertaste) and goes down VERY quickly. I am a huge fan of this, and will definitely be looking for whatever else Shale Ridge puts out in the future (as literally everything I’ve tried from them has been impeccable). This cider even made losing (badly) in a game of Scrabble a great time. 🙃
