Today, I invite you to join me on a nostalgic journey back to WWI as I open a very special tin of pipe tobacco from the greatest name in the tobacco world, Alfred Dunhill. During WWI (around 1917), Dunhill developed three different temporary wartime pipe tobaccos specifically for the Expeditionary Forces: - “Campaign” Plug - “Campaign” Mixture - Best Scotch Thick Black Twist There is very little known about these historic blends and their composition. I managed to acquire the first and only tin of “Campaign” mixture that I have ever seen. The interesting thing is that the can appears to look more recent than the WWI period which might suggest that Dunhill offered it briefly at some other time exclusively in their store. It’s a mystery I have yet to solve. This Dunhill tobacco, regardless of how old it is just exceptional. I’m no Jim Amash when it comes to having a sophisticated palette, put I’m detecting notes of some sweet matured Virginias, Latakia, Orientals, and perhaps some cavendish. The aroma and taste is of sweet stone fruits, leather with a kiss of incensed smoke and nutty earthiness. I can imagine how any soldier on the fighting front would be elated over a mixture as fine as this long ribbon cut tobacco. Dunhill also made “Campaign” pipes during the WWI period. Unfortunately I don’t have one of these to feature today. My oldest Dunhill is a cased Shell LB from 1923, so I thought it would be a suitable replacement! I’ve never seen a finer blast on any pipe. The ring grain on this beauty would probably make even J.T. Cooke or Michael Parks blush! This is small Greek indie batch perfumery, which already has launched remarkable scents like Chypre Inferno or the latest one – Hekau. However, I fell in love with Tafir Extrait, which was wake-up call for this story. The name ‘Tafir’ has nothing to do with Greek culture or anything mystical, as I had thought. Whereas, it is a combination of two words: TA(bac) and FIR – the two exquisite protagonists whose dialectic creates that olfactory mixture. The fragrance, as the founder of the brand says, was largely inspired by rich and comforting Mediterranean forests – and this fragrance gives you this feeling. Right away you get there dried fruits and balsamic fir, that defines this scent. Then, there come boozy labdanum, sweet tobacco and sour-like accents which make this scent addictive and exotic. But this is not typical sweet tobacco scent. It goes its own unique way. There is also something liqueur here, almost praline-like. Largest ever seizure of illegal tobacco in Calderdale A recent operation in Halifax between West Yorkshire Trading Standards, West Yorkshire Police & Wagtail UK, targeting dealers of cheap and illicit tobacco resulted in a seizure of almost 420,000 cigarettes, 14.85kg of Hand Rolling Tobacco, 590 Oversize Vapes & 48 pouches of shisha tobacco. If genuine, the value of the seizure would be over £350,000 with a loss of duty to the tax payer of almost £200,000. A quantity of cash was also seized, believed to be the proceeds of crime from the sales of illicit tobacco. A total of 8 premises were visited across Calderdale in which illegal practices were taking place. The operation targeted hot spot areas and businesses identified from intelligence and complaints passed to West Yorkshire Trading Standards by members of the public and partner agencies. On one of the premises, over 19,000 packets of illegal cigarettes were uncovered, representing a total of over 385,000 cigarettes, the largest seizure in Calderdale to date by the team, and the second largest seizure across West Yorkshire in the 10 years of the Illicit Tobacco initiative. In a number of premises, officers found illicit tobacco hidden in various concealments built into wheelie bins, store rooms and behind the counter. To date the programme has taken almost 13 million illicit cigarettes, and more than 3.5 tonnes of illicit hand rolling tobacco off the streets of West Yorkshire.
