Earlier this week, the MICOP Living with Love Team attended the 2024 California Reducing Disparities Project Annual Convening, themed "Together We Make A Difference" at Loyola Mount University and at the Sheraton Hotel in Los Angeles. The CRDP Convening was hosted by the California Department of Public Health, Office of Health Equity. The Living with Love team met alongside 33 other projects from the African American, Latino/a/x, Native American, Asian Pacific Islanders, and LGBTQ+ communities. The Living with Love team offered a blessing in Mixteco, Spanish, and English to open up on day 1. The MICOP team shared knowledge with the California Department of Public Health, Office of Health Equity, Deputy Director Rohan Radhakrisha, MD, MPH, MS, Assistant Deputy Director Ana Bolanos, MSW, Dr. Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, MD, PhD and Rachel G. Guerrero, LCSW, among others. The team made statewide connections with other diverse and intersectional mental health providers and raised consciousness in the space about ways to strengthen service to our communities through more culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health services for unserved and underserved populations. The team left inspired as together we envisioned bold, transformational shifts in the California mental health system for generations to come. On March 12 — a week after primary day — opponents of Proposition 1 waved the white flag, conceding that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s mental health ballot measure would likely pass. Today, the anti-Prop. 1 campaign withdrew its concession and revived its efforts. What changed? For one thing, the vote count tightened: As of late Saturday, Prop. 1 was leading by about 20,000 votes, with 7.5 million ballots counted and some 287,000 left to be tallied, according to the Secretary of State. ✍️ What do you think about this? 🔗 Link in bio for more. 📸 Fred Greaves

A large part of advocacy within the nursing home industry is reporting problems. Whether it’s simply saying something to staff or going through the steps to report abuse and neglect to higher authorities, it is vital to say something. However, it’s disheartening to see just how necessary reporting has become. Recent statistics from California Department of Public Health have shown that the number of complaints have increased, and continue to do so. Newsom and supporters tout Prop. 1 as a potential solution to the state’s dual opioid and homelessness crises. According to their estimates the bond would build 4,350 housing units, with roughly half set aside for veterans, as well as 6,800 mental health and addiction disorder treatment slots. In its opposition statement, the League of Women Voters of California critiqued the way Prop. 1 was “rushed through the Legislature” with last-minute amendments and without substantial debate. The league also highlighted that Newsom’s plan to reallocate money from the so-called millionaire’s tax will diminish the services counties currently provide and restrict local control. ✍️ The primaries are coming up. The guidelines came down as California tipped over the edge of a major respiratory illness surge fueled by COVID-19, seasonal influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV. Flu and COVID-19 hospitalizations both peaked during the first week of January and have been trending downward since, according to state data. Masking requirements have not changed, and people with COVID-19 should wear masks for 10 days whether or not they have symptoms. The new guidelines do not apply to employees at high-risk health care settings like hospitals and nursing homes, which may also have different policies for visitors. 🔗 Tap the link in bio to read more about why this is happening. 📸 Shelby Knowles

Gov. Gavin Newsom wants counties to spend some revenue from California’s so-called “millionaire’s tax” on the state’s homeless crisis. That alarms advocates for children’s mental health programs that are getting that money today, who said the governor was unnecessarily pitting the needs of the state’s homeless population against children’s mental services. Prevention and early intervention services would take the biggest cuts, they said, ultimately worsening a parallel mental health crisis. In response, Newsom conceded a few things on his original proposal, which include reinstating some local flexibility and carving out money for children and youth programs. 🗳️ If Newsom’s proposal were on the ballot today, would you vote ✅ yes or ❌no on it? 📸 Larry Valenzuela, CalMatters/CatchLight Local

🦦🦦🦦 Gift Shop News! The Sutter County Museum’s Gift Shop has the CUTEST stuffed animals – including RIVER OTTERS – which have added more fun (How is that even possible?!) to our temporary exhibit, “Potter the Otter: A Healthy Adventure!” This special temporary exhibit is on display until July 30th. We sure hope you have time to visit the Museum and Gift Shop soon! Our hours are Tuesday – Friday from 9am-5pm and Saturday-Sunday from 12pm-4pm. River Otter Facts: 🦦 River Otters are found in most parts of the United States and Canada. 🦦 River Otters are generally nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active at dawn or dusk); although, diurnal (daytime) activity does occur. Being quite sociable, otters are often observed in family groups in summer and early fall. Otters are known to play much more than most wild animals! 🦦 River Otters can hold their breath for four+ minutes underwater. A long tail and webbed feet help with swimming. Their fur is water-repellent. 🦦 On frozen lakes, otters move fast with a series of three small jumps and a glide. They also love to slide down snowy slopes on their bellies. 🦦 River Otters are endangered in many places due to over-hunting for their fur, pollution, and other damage to lakes and rivers. The “Potter the Otter: A Healthy Adventure” traveling exhibition is on display at the Sutter County Museum through July 30th. #suttercountymuseum #suttercountymuseumgiftshop #museumgiftshop #riverotters #pottertheotter #stuffedanimals #suttercounty #first5 #californiadepartmentofpublichealth #first5santaclaracounty #childrensdiscoverymuseumofsanjose #pottertheotterahealthyadventure #yubasutter

Headed into to what may be the worst mosquito season in years for LA county due to the recent heavy rains according to an article by @nbcnews. According to the article, Here are some things you can do to prepare: Get rid of standing water around your home -- that's the main draw for mosquitoes. *Avoid floral or fruity scented soaps: More than 60 percent of what a mosquito smells comes from soap, rather than natural body odors. Use a fan. Studies show citronella candles don't do much to keep away mosquitoes. So try a fan instead. *Wear long pants and sleeves that are loose-fitting. *If u do get bitten, the CDC recommends using an ice pack and antihistamine cream. #cbsla #kcalnews #mosquito #losangeleshealth #losangelescounty #californiadepartmentofpublichealth #linkedhealthlosangeles https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/los-angeles-county-mosquito-season-projected-to-be-heavy-after-winter-rains/

For the second time in as many years, Gov. Gavin Newsom is pushing for major reform of California’s mental health system, this time by overhauling the way counties spend mental health dollars and placing a bond measure before voters to build more psychiatric beds. County behavioral health advocates and local service providers fear programs will be cut, and, much like the controversial CARE Courts legislation — which passed last year and allows individuals to petition a court to force seriously mentally ill people into treatment and housing — say Newsom’s initial announcement came as a shock. CalAIM has not yet significantly shifted the on-the-ground reality for many of these young people, experts say, but a number of important policy changes are officially underway: • About 40% of the state’s children and youth are insured by Medi-Cal. They no longer need a formal diagnosis to access specialty mental health services. • The state has simplified behavioral health documentation requirements. • A “No Wrong Door Policy” should make it easier for children and adults to receive behavioral health care no matter where they enter the system, replacing what can feel like a bureaucratic maze that varies by county. • An “enhanced care management” benefit provides services and case management to members of priority populations, including those who are homeless, experiencing early psychosis or involved with the child welfare or criminal justice systems. The governor’s office did not respond to questions about the proposed funding delays. He will revise his budget proposal in May, based on actual state revenue, and hammer out a final funding deal with legislators in June.

California is preparing to close dozens of state-run COVID-19 testing and treatment sites ahead of the planned end of the state of emergency in February.  Sites that are operating under 50% capacity are scheduled to close before the end of January. Forty-four OptumServe sites will be shuttered this week, and 48 mobile “mini-buses” will begin closing in two weeks, according to the California Department of Public Health. OptumServe, a health care operations company, runs 123 testing and treatment sites along with four vaccination clinics through state contracts.  The closures come just one week after Gov. Gavin Newsom released his January budget proposal, which moves $614 million in unspent COVID-19 response funds to the state’s general fund and drastically reduced the amount of pandemic money for the upcoming year.  Tap the link in our bio to read more.

🤔 English: Participants in a recent CDPH survey answered various questions about the use of skin creams. Of those that said they use imported or homemade creams, 7 out of 10 participants said they do it for lighting skin or removing blemishes. Imported or homemade creams advertised for lightening skin or removing blemishes are dangerous. These creams are more likely to contain harmful chemicals, such as mercury. Around the world, the beauty industry's promotion of these creams is being challenged. These creams have been shown to support unfair privilege toward lighter skin. The next time you are purchasing a new skin cream, reflect on your reasons for choosing it. Also, view CDPH’s mercury in skin creams webpage to make sure it is not listed for containing mercury.
