Apollo vs Hercules aka Augustus vs Antony. The Temple of Apollo was dedicated in 28 BC next to Augustus’ house on the Palatine to celebrate his final victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra in 31 BC . Apollo was Augustus’ favourite deity and supporter in the decisive battle of Actium. Hercules, as Antonii’s ancestor, was on Antony’s side. The scarce remains of the temple can be found at the Palatine Museum: terracotta plaques showing Apollo fighting Hercules for the Delphic tripod ( second photo) and girls decorating the beryl - these plaques may have been used to decorate the porticus of the Danaids (2 out of 50 are remaining). Augustus: First Emperor of Rome by Adrian Goldsworthy I have to admit that going into this, Augustus/Octavian/Octavius was probably one of my favorite people in ancient history and this book certainly reconfirms that for me. Goldsworthy’s style, in all his Roman history books, is engaging and easy to follow, providing a detailed account that really allows you to learn what is going on. I particularly liked how he organized the book, shifting the way he refers to Augustus to match the Emperor’s changing preferences over time. Throughout Augustus’ life he drastically changed his approaches, from being incredibly ruthless during times of civil war to more of a seemingly benevolent dictator, oh I mean benevolent “Princeps”. This book always reminds the reader that Augustus, though later in life generous and often forgiving, was still basically a warlord. Overall, this book provides a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the life of the first Roman Emperor. Note: I highly recommend reading Caesar by Goldsworthy first. That book provides a deeper world-building aspect than this one and serves as a somewhat prequel to Augustus. The first Roman Emperor Octavian, who became Augustus after his victory in the war against Cleopatra - created a victory monument where his camp was situated during the Battle of Actium. You can see even to this day the outline of where all the captured rams from Mark Antony’s ships were hung up on display. 🚢 𝒍𝒂 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝒅𝒆 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒊𝒐 🚢 Le polarización del 𝑺𝒆𝒈𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑻𝒓𝒊𝒖𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐 era ya más que evidente: todo se dividía entre los partidarios del heredero por ley de César, 𝑪𝒂𝒚𝒐 𝑶𝒄𝒕𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐, o del fiel comandante y mano derecha del exdictador, 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒐 𝑨𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒐. Éste última contaba con el apoyo de Egipto gracias a su relación con la reina 𝑪𝒍𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒂 𝑽𝑰𝑰. El encuentro final entre ambas fuerzas se produjo en la costa occidental de Grecia, concretamente en la entrada al 𝑮𝒐𝒍𝒇𝒐 𝒅𝒆 𝑨𝒎𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒂, en la fecha del 2 de Setiembre del año 31a.C. Pese a que los enemigos tenían la espalda resguardada y bien provista, el objetivo de Octavio era bloquear la salida a las naves de la coalición egipto-romana. Disponiendo a su flota en la entrada del golfo, los generales 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒐 𝑽𝒊𝒑𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒐 𝑨𝒈𝒓𝒊𝒑𝒂 y 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒐 𝑳𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒐 lideraban el flanco izquierdo y derecho respectivamente. Mientras, 𝑳𝒖𝒄𝒊𝒐 𝑨𝒓𝒓𝒖𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒐 lideraba las naves centrales. La batalla fue de gran magnitud, pues se estima que combatieron casi 1000 navíos en total, pese al debate debido a la variación en las fuentes. Al final las naves de Octavio ganaron presión y lograron asfixiar a las naves enemigas, forzando a Marco Antonio y a Cleopatra a huir rápidamente del combate y acabando en el posterior suicidio de ambos. Unusual for a Sunday but we have another Hellenistic Hero showdown: Cleopatra VII against Antiochus III. As always you can vote in the stories,my channel or on Threads! Various images show Cleopatra VII: two busts and a coin with her face on. The marble head is made from marble dated to 40-30 BC and was found along the Via Appia. Cleopatra is shown wearing the traditional broad royal diadem of the Ptolemaic dynasty and her hair is pulled back in the melon hairstyle with bun in the neck. The portrait of the queen was made during her lifetime and most likely set up in an Italian villa. Cleopatra VII Philopater was the daughter of Ptolemy XII and the last pharao and ruler of the Ptolemaic kingdom. Born in 69 BC, Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII became co-regent of Egypt after the death of their father in 51 BC. As was the tradition with the Ptolemies, she married her brother and they ruled together. However, they soon turned on one another and Cleopatra was banished. Three years later, Pompey who had lost the civil war to Caesar, fled to Egypt and was murdered by Ptolemy. Taking advantage of Caesar’s anger at this act, Cleopatra used this to gain his support and had her brother killed. In 47 BC, she gave birth to Caesarion, her son with Caesar. Her rule brought stability to the a torn Egypt and she even learned Egyptian. When Caesar died, Cleopatra started a relationship and had three children with Marc Anthony, who married to Octavian’s sister. This caused a tension between the men, which escalated to a full out civil war. Together they ruled over the eastern part of the empire until they were beaten in battle on the coast of Greece where the two armies faced each other.
