This is my gut era 🫶🏻 As you know back in February I started regular fasting after listening to the health benefits in a podcast specifically around women fasting with @dr.mindypelz. I ll be honest when ever I wasn’t fasting I’d turn to all those foods I’d been fantasising over whilst I was fasting which weren’t necessarily the best choices and kinda counterproductive 😖 I do feel being in my 40s I don’t get away with as much as I did in my 20s and early 30s even, I’m not just talking about weight gain but the feeling and effect of what I put in my body is more noticeable and less tolerable as I passed mid The whole point of me fasting was to reset my gut, my immune system etc and yet I’l was not then eating wholesome foods to support the work I’d put in. I was starting to feel shit about myself 😬 So, I am not officially being more conscious with my food efforts, because those healthy foods I actually LOVE, it just feels more convenient to grab the fast crap stuff. These are the things I wish I would have told my 20-year-old self. Looking back on my journey, there's so much I wish I could tell her. 🧘‍♀️ I'd start by saying, 'Stop ignoring your body; it knows more than you think. Trust it.' 😴 I'd remind myself to ease up on the extreme cardio, to ditch the idea that surviving on four hours of sleep is sustainable, and to stop punishing myself for enjoying the food I love. 🥗 It took me years to realize that quick fixes only lead to disappointment and that my negative beliefs were holding me back more than I realized. 🍽️ I wish I had understood sooner the importance of nourishing my body with real food, of prioritizing rest, and of being kind to myself. Now, I'm on a journey of self-compassion when it comes to my body, health, and wellness. I have learned to treat myself with the care and respect I deserve. It's also my goal to help other women navigate these challenges. 💪🏻 What would you tell your younger self if you could? What a beautiful musical experience—vocals are wildly skillful—the pull in of Deep South Country while also educating—did you know that the Beatles inspiration for writing Blackbird was the Civil Rights movement in Little Rock Alabama the 1960’s——you didn’t? Oh neither did I. And I’m 42 years old. I have been in the skincare industry for more than 17 years now, and one thing is for sure: skincare science keeps evolving — bringing forth exciting trends and innovations. In the last year, we have seen several skincare routines & products gain popularity, promising glowing, healthy skin. However, it’s crucial to understand that what works for one person may not work for another due to our unique skin types. Some products and routines social media has been trending on are: ➡️ **Double Cleansing** ➡️ **Retinol Alternatives** ➡️ **CBD Skincare** ➡️ **K-Beauty** ➡️ **Slugging** ➡️ **Sustainable Skincare** Some of these work for me like Bakuchiol (a retinol alternative) and sometimes double cleansing when I wear heavy makeup. However, even though my skin can run dry, I still cannot bear ‘slugging’. It’s aim is to lock in maximum moisture at night and bring in suppleness the next day. I just could never deal the heavy grease and goopy feel on my skin! And that’s okay… there are many more ways to achieve a moisturized skin at night. You and I just have to figure out what would work for us. The key lies in understanding our skin type, concerns, and preferences. This is why I emphasize & advocate for skin consultation first before getting into a new trend… so that you get personalized recommendations tailored to your unique needs. Additionally, patch testing new products and introducing them gradually into your routine can help identify any potential sensitivities or allergies. Slugging, which comes from the K-beauty world, involves putting a thin layer of occlusive ointment like Vaseline or Aquaphor on your face to help prevent water loss. It’s a viral skincare trend that involves coating your face with an occlusive product, like Vaseline or any petrolatum-based formula, in order to help it heal. It got its name because it makes your face look ultra shiny and slimy—like a slug made its way across your face. ⬇️ HERE IS HOW TO DO IT ⬇️ Apply your serums and then layer a coat of Vaseline or Aquaphor on top to seal in those active ingredients, (you can also use Vaseline or Aquaphor by themselves with nothing underneath). You can slug overnight or do a short term slugging (like for 10-20 minutes). It’s a preference. If you have breakout prone skin, I might not recommend this skincare treatment as you could potentially breakout from it. But if you have dry skin you could get some much need hydration from the technique. Sleeping in your “slugging products” could potentially be very messy. Your face might stick to your pillow case or you could feel exceptionally “slimy” no pun intended. That being said, I am not a slugging kind of gal. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I don’t like the thick greasy texture of petroleum jelly on my face. But it’s ok if you like the feel, not all skincare is for everyone. The main thing is that you find a routine that works for you and you stay consistent. DAMN! IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE AND FEEL ALIVE!! Winston and I went for a litle grind up and down Prairie Mountain this morning and we couldn't have asked for a better trip. Perfect temps, perfect snow. Perfect amount of sun and perfect amount of 'grind'. I cheersed a few women and said happy IWD as we passed 💜 Rewind to December when we were here last. The conditions, the scenery, the dog all were perfect. But I was not. I cried all the way to the trailhead. A combo of burnout, bottomed out hormones - I was done. But alas. With hormones - I'm back. It's not perfect but I feel calm, excited about life again and able to deal with stresses. There’s an exhausting amount of chatter about the “right” way to eat in midlife. ✅Some of it’s helpful, some of it’s only helpful for some people, and some of it’s beyond ridiculous❌ As a fellow 40s woman and peri dietitian, here’s something I want you to know: I’ve been doing this for 20+ years. I've seen it all, and I'm telling you, these 4 are 80% of the nutrition equation for most women. I’m not saying you won't need more...you probably will. But not at the expense of these. Save this post because I’m sharing what you want to hear 🔖 Ladies…your approach to weight loss in your 30s simply won’t fly in your 40s and beyond my friend. Here’s what to do instead👇 🥩Eat mostly protein (>30g/meal) + colorful produce. This doesn’t mean cancel the starches, but you definitely want a stronger focus on protein & produce. ⏲️Eat satisfying meals. Avoid grazing❌ Insulin resistances increases in peri. Grazing will only make this worse. With every spike in blood sugar, your body releases insulin, a fat storage hormone.  🍽️Eat an earlier dinner & avoid snacking after.  🍬I know, I know, this one is hard to hear - cut WAY back on sweets & alcohol. These foods offer your bod little nutrition, but a heck of a lot of calories. They don’t set you up for success. 🏋️Strength train at least 2-3 times a week & increase your weights over time. Building muscle helps your body burn more energy at rest. HIIT’s still great too, but probably in smaller doses.  🚶Walk everyday. You have to be burning energy for weight loss. 💤Sleep + self care are non-negotiables. 🥗Increase your fiber. Aim for AT LEAST 25g daily. 35g is OPTIMAL! Fiber helps keep you feeling full longer, which can curb cravings. This will go a long way toward weight-loss efforts, which can be especially tough as you age and your metabolism slows down. Always wear an SPF......I know it could be snowing at the moment but it is important to protect your skin 365 days. It's actually those pesky UV rays, that you can't see that damage your skin. UVA - ages your skin. UVB - burns the skin. Did you know 90% of ageing comes from UV rays? 😱😱 The lines, reduction in collagen.......I'm a big one for ageing naturally but I still like to ensure I protect my skin. 😍😍 We have 2 lovely facial SPFs.....Facial Skin Shade or our Sun Day. Today I'm wearing our tinted facial Skin Shade (I am away at the moment so a tad warmer than home 🤩🤩). It's great as it gives your skin a lovely covering but it's SPF50. Use on its own & add a lippy or as a base for make-up. Need help with an SPF? Here are just a few ways you can mitigate some of the symptoms in today’s post ⬇️ ✨Tweak your diet to include nutrients like A, C, E, zinc, omegas, and protein that give maximum support to skin, energy, mood, and sleep. ✨Consider adding a few nontoxic, midlife friendly skincare products or routines to keep the skin barrier nourished and healthy. Retinols? Vitamin C serum? Facial oils? ✨Monitor key labs + intervene early - when they shift outside of optimal ranges (yes, even if they’re still “normal”). ✨ Stack your fitness, self care, and supplements to target your particular peri symptoms and goals. ✨ And, of course, understand your HRT options and partner with a trusted prescriber (I don’t prescribe, but I can definitely help you learn and pick the right pro) Specific recommendations will depend on YOUR situation.
