Info for KB4C Relay Swim Race Sunday July 7th starting at 8:00am at the Event Site in Hood River, OR. Teams have as many as 4 people who take turns completing as many laps as they can in a 3-hour time window (8-11am). Swimmers go around a short course (roughly 1/5 mile) directly in front of the Event Site. After each lap swimmers return to shallows to pass their team’s tracker to the next team member. The course is a triangle with safety teams in the middle. Max number of teams:30 Timing for Relay Only: E8 timing will provide chips that track your laps. You must exchange the chip every time you switch swimmers. Remembering Raelene Lauer and her legacy through Rae of Hope… Brittany’s experience highlights the essence of our YASU program, providing cancer survivors like her with much-needed moments of relaxation and joy. Just last month, Brittany had the opportunity to go to the Saguaro Lake Ranch (@saguarolakeranch), Orange Sky Restaurant, do some horseback riding, have a full spa day, and have dinner at the resort. Here is what Brittany has to say about her experience: "April 19 is a very difficult day for me. It is the anniversary of when I lost my great uncle, my person, who died by suicide. It is also the anniversary of my cancer diagnosis. I always try to do something special for myself on that day. It’s usually a horseback ride and some time to myself. Having the ability to go on the ride and then have a day to myself, getting pampered and relaxing was such a blessing. It was so relaxing I fell asleep during some of my spa treatments. After the spa, I was able to go to a really nice dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. The food was so good! It was really a blessing to have that day and be able to kind of sit with the anniversaries and think about what they mean to me. It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for me since I would never be able to afford that type of spa service or that dinner. I encourage everyone to opportunity because it is truly a gift that will stay with you forever." We're honored to play a part in creating such cherished memories. No one wants to say anything to make their loved one feel worse. Unfortunately, that means, in some cases, we turn to cliché language that might not be that helpful. Here are a few common sentiments you may want to avoid: “Everything happens for a reason.” “I know how you feel.” “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Statements like these can minimize and dismiss a person’s pain. Instead, focus on sharing positive words that validate what your loved one is going through or simply offer to listen. A listening ear can be a blessing. And just note that if you have shared one of these statements before – it’s OK. AND- if you still don’t know what to say at that moment, say, “I don’t know what to say, but I’m here to listen and support you.” YA survivors, this one’s for you! They approached us with extensive stress and concern last year, which speaks to the critical need of fundraising in order to further help YA cancer patients travel to appointments and treatments, and put food on the table for themselves and their families. YASU eases the financial burden for young adult cancer patients and survivors. So, it’s mental health awareness month. Is it weird that I’ve forgotten what fun feels like? I haven’t felt my deep happiness or truest smile in a while. like I’ve been in a monotonous state of depression and anxiety that smiling and joy became absolutely foreign expressions? My mind, body, and soul have been in a constant state of fight that I don’t recognize who I’ve been; A displaced mind in a dysfunctional body. I feel like a fire extinguished. I am figuring out how to operate this new working self. It seems very #BellaBaxter . I have gone through evolutions of myself, of which, none like the last. Although, apprehensive of this phase, I think I’m going to allow myself to lean into this. I’ll allow myself to feel all the levels of grief for my prior self and remember that sunshine comes after the rain. Let’s forge ahead to an enlightened place, shall we? I am excited to share that I was given an offer from Penn State’s Philosophy Department with an added award! 😭 As an AYA cancer survivor diagnosed at 16, going to college was my biggest dream. It’s a new week, which means a new opportunity to feature one of our Rae of Hope recipients. Tenaira went to the Chateau Elan Winery & Resort in the summer with her friend Obi. Here is what Tenaira had to say about her experience: "After receiving my diagnosis I was unable to travel, unable to participate in my hobbies, and I was unable to go on extended outings because of the limitations I had with my mobility. My Rae of Hope trip was the first time I went on an overnight outing since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I received a stone crop restorative body treatment, a full body massage, and had access to various spa and hotel amenities. I am grateful for the opportunity to be in an atmosphere where I could pause, be mindful, and relax away from the day to day cancer related affairs. Thank you YASU!" I was one of them. 🙋 Being diagnosed with osteosarcoma at 21 impacted every part of my adult life since then, from career to relationships to finances to infertility and more. There are over 90,000 young adults (aged 18 - 45) who are diagnosed with cancer each year, and financial toxicity remains one of their BIGGEST challenges.
