Women studying STEM are already few, but women continuing to work in STEM fields after the age of 25 are even fewer. Over one million women are currently employed in STEM professions, yet they only make up 29% of the STEM workforce. Jessie Diana Pontigo da inicio a la jornada por el Día internacional de la mujeres en matemáticas con la conferencia: “La geometría inherente en el problema 16 de Hilbert” Resumen: El problema 16 de Hilbert es uno de los pocos problemas que quedan aún sin resolver en la lista de 23 problemas que anunció Hilbert en el primer Congreso Internacional de Matemáticas del año 1900. En la segunda parte de este problema Hilbert pide determinar el número máximo de ciclos límite en ecuaciones diferenciales polinomiales en el plano real, en función del grado de la ecuación. Los ciclos límite son soluciones que corresponden a curvas cerradas en el plano de fases, donde las soluciones vecinas tienden a acumularse girando en forma de espiral cuando el tiempo tiende a más o a menos infinito, y suelen representar oscilaciones autosostenidas, como lo es por ejemplo el ritmo cardiaco. En esta plática abordaremos este problema, en particular pasaremos a sus versiones infinitesimal, tangencial y de dimensión cero. Veremos cómo, a pesar de ser un problema en el plano real, la geometría compleja se convierte en el ambiente natural para la descripción del fenómeno. Ganz sicher keinen Schiffbruch erleiden werden diese sechs Mathe-Asse: Lars Krabbenhöft (16 Jahre, Höchstadt/Aisch), Christian Kraftsik (18 Jahre, Vaterstetten), Vera Lavrova (19 Jahre, Göttingen), Leonard Kottisch (18 Jahre, Oldenburg), Johannes Raitz von Frentz (18 Jahre, Lehrte) und Paul Jakob Schmidt (18 Jahre, Osterode) bilden nämlich das deutsche Team bei der diesjährigen Internationalen Mathematik-Olympiade in Großbritannien (@imo2024uk). 🧠 Das Auswahlverfahren für die IMO ist äußerst anspruchsvoll. Resposted from @hearherstories As high school students, Calcea Johnson and Ne’Kiya Jackson worked to find valid new proof for the 2,000-year-old theorem. 💪🏾💪🏾 Two college freshmen who, during their final year of high school, found a new way to prove Pythagoras’s theorem by using trigonometry – which mathematicians for generations thought was impossible – have since uncovered multiple more such proofs, they revealed in a national interview on Sunday. The 2,000-year-old theorem established that the sum of the squares of a right triangle’s two shorter sides equals the square of the hypotenuse – the third, longest side opposite the shape’s right angle. Countless schoolchildren taking geometry have memorized the notation summarizing the theorem: a2 + b2 = c2. For 2,000 years, mathematicians maintained that any alleged proof of the Pythagorean theorem that was based in trigonometry would constitute a logical fallacy known as circular reason – in essence, trying to validate an idea with the idea itself. But the bonus question on a math contest that Johnson and Jackson took home to complete during the Christmas break of their final year at St Mary’s served as the impetus for them to plot out a new way to demonstrate that one could indeed use trigonometry to prove Pythagoras’s theorem.

Christiane Rousseau, vice president of the International Mathematics Union, said that Mirzakhani’s award, which she received as part of the latest group of Fields Medal honorees, was “an extraordinary moment.” She further observed, “Marie-Curie had Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry at the beginning of the 20th century, but in mathematics this is the first time we have a woman winning the most prestigious prize there is. This is a celebration for women.” After attending college in Iran, Mirzakhani went on to graduate school at Harvard University where she became fascinated by hyperbolic geometry. It's Major Declaration Season! Use the program declaration or change link through Online Tools to declare a major or honours program or add or remove a minor. You can declare a major once you have completed 12 units of coursework.
