Elsdon has a grim reminder of the past in the gibbet that rears its gaunt outline on the hill known as Steng Cross. Strangely enough this gallows has no connection with the Border raiders, many of whom met their death “high on the gallows tree”. The present gibbet stands on the site of one from which the body of William Winter was suspended in chains after he had been hanged at The Westgate in Newcastle. On the night of 29th August 1791 William Winter murdered Margaret Crozier believing her to be rich. To celebrate Halloween I recently took myself on a little spooky day trip to Northumberland to see something that’s been on my North East Bucket List for ages! 👻 This is “Winter’s Gibbet”, the lone gallows in the middle of the Northumberland countryside where William Winter was hung for the murder of local shop keeper Margaret Crozier in 1791. His body remained there for years (until even his clothes had rotted away 😱) as a warning to others until he was eventually buried and the body was replaced with a wooden effigy The wooden effigy has long gone but over the years many things have appeared hanging from the top of the Gibbet including a wooden head and a skull … items from the top tend to mysteriously vanish 👀💀 Despite visiting on a beautiful sunny day it was very eerie standing beneath the Gibbet on the isolated Northumberland Moors. Locals say they see his ghost wandering the moors at night … but I didn’t stick around long enough to find out … it really gave me goosebumps! If you fancy trying this creepy road trip yourselves you’ll find Winters Gibbet at Steng Cross. It’s easy to find on Google Maps, on the unmarked road between Harwood and Elsdon. ALL POINTS NORTH - For some reason I have become more sensitive to dusk. Something in my body yells: « seek shelter! » This time the cold factor enhanced this night angst. So after Winter’s Gibbet I booked a room 40km away and started rejoicing about the warm shower that was awaiting me. . But when I arrived at the hotel in Hexham, the landlady was very stressed with my presence, as she had not read about my booking. She had other trouble: my very room had water dripping from the ceiling. She rebooked me in another local hotel, but made an error: she chose for the Newcastle property of that hotel. The one in town appeared to be fully booked. Return to sender it was, and I could finally sleep in the (flooded) room. Better than freezing outside. . I promised to leave after a short nap, but in the end I left at 8am. There went my (unrealistic) chances of making it to the finish before 8pm. . Had a cracking few days away bikepacking the Sandstone Way over the weekend. Lots of big open space, hills, history and friendly locals along the way. Tougher going than the 130 miles suggests mainly due to the amount of sticky mud although we did score on day two for glorious blue skies and frozen trails (in the morning at least). Taken last year, I loved Northumberland so much I've come back again this year. I am glad I did. The landscape here is alight with the colours of autumn. The moorland is brown and gold and the ancient woodland is burning orange and red. It should always be autumn in Northumberland, it suits it well. Each day whilst I am away I will treat you to a tale from this old and haunted county. The first is that of Winter's Gibbet. Once his body was cut down, the gibbet remained until weather and local custom destroyed the wood. The gibbet has been remade a number of times since the original stood, but no matter how many times the executioner’s pole has been stolen or destroyed, it is always rebuilt. Evening all. Only one more day to go until the weekend, so let's cheer you up by chatting about a device for capital punishment for #ThrowbackThursday. What could be more creepy that a lone pole used to display a corpse? What if the lone pole was situated in stark moorland in the absolute middle of nowhere? That's probably why I have always visited the Winter's Gibbet during the middle of the day, otherwise I think I would be freaking out. Way back in 1791 a lady called Margaret Crozier lived in the nearby village of Raw. Believing her to be rich, a chap called William Winter and two female accomplices (Jane and Eleanor Clark) broke in to her house, murdered the old woman and then made off with her goods. The keen eye of a shepherd boy who had seen them the night before managed to bring them to justice. The three of them were then hung at Westgate in Newcastle on the 10th August 1792. Winter's body was then taken to Steng Cross, not far from the actual murder and was hung in chains on the gibbet for many years until until even his clothes had rotted away. The gibbet was made for Winter alone and no one else hung from it. After that the gibbet was dismantled. Then in 1867 Walter Trevelyan, owner of the land and the Wallington Estate, built a replica gibbet with a wooden mannequin in the current location.
