🪨 HARDCASTLE CRAGS 🪨 Looking for an exciting walk with the kids and dog, we recently spend a lovely day at NT Hardcastle Crags, a spectacular wooded valley with 19th century Gibson Mill at its heart. You could spend ages here with 15 miles of footpaths to explore, discovering tumbling streams, waterfalls, deep ravines, ragged rocks and the kids favourite, 3 sets of stepping stones (at least). NT have adapted it wonderfully so there is something for everyone, whether it’s the estate track which is a wide tree lined route that is wheelchair and pushchair accessible, to a challenging hike at the top of the valley through more difficult terrain. We did the Mill Walk which goes from Midgehole car park up through the pines with stunning views of the valley (upper woodland trail) to Gibson Mill, with the return journey alongside the winding river (riverside route). Quite challenging in places, I’d recommend age 5+ for a nice family challenge walk (about 2.5 miles in total). Halfway we had well deserved ice cream and drinks from the café at the Mill. We hope to come back soon to tackle some of the routes beyond the Mill including Lumb Hole Falls. Top tip - take a picture of the map at the car park before you set off as there is limited phone signal in the valley. Pay and display car parks at Clough Hole (HX7 7AZ) and Midgehole (HX7 7AA) - £5 to park, free for NT members. However, it does get busy during weekends, so have a plan b ready in case the car parks are closed. #yorkshiremum #mumbloggeruk #yorkshiremummyblogger #childfriendlyyorkshire #kidfriendlyyorkshire #daysoutyorkshire #placestotakethekids @hardcastlecrags_nt #hardcastlecrags #hebdenbridge #visitcalderdale

...and then a little walk up the Cunnery Wood with the sole purpose of having a look around. Turns out that I was rewarded with an entire slope of bluebells that had me questioning my sanity for going up, but it's easily one of the most beautiful sights have had here around this time of year. Very nice stuff. 10/10 would walk there again if the hill wasn't so steep. 😅 Not pictured: the curses muttered under my breath as I went up the hill and debated stealing a fallen twig to then use it as a walking stick near the top. #ShibdenHall #halifax #calderdale #westyorkshire #yorkshire #england #visitcalderdale

I needed a morning for stretching my legs a little bit and enjoying the quiet and the birdsong, so going early and leaving early was a fantastic idea. The beauty of Calderdale 82.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-2) From Allescholes, the packhorse trail down to the Walsden-Littleborough turnpike road; 3-4) Looking towards Warland, a tiny hamlet, very old and charming, bridging the border between the townships of Walsden and Blatchinworth & Calderbrook on the Eastern side of the Walsden valley. The infant Walsden Water, often erroneously called the River Calder, runs through the hamlet and is the borderline between the two old townships. Nowadays, it is the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. Warland Farm, aka Warland House, nestled into the hillside and dated 1655 I F. The house gives its name to the Warland district; 4-6) Air vents for Summit Tunnel, a railway tunnel between Walsden and Littleborough, which was begun in 1837 for the Manchester & Leeds Railway Company. It cost £251,000 to construct. At any one time, between 800 and 1200 men were working on the tunnel. 9 workmen died during the construction. It used 23,000,000 bricks and 8,000 tons of cement. George Stephenson regarded the tunnel as the greatest piece of railway engineering he had achieved. 7-10) Stonehouse Farm, 19th-century, its name probably derived from the fact that many of the other houses in Walsden, when this property was erected, being built of wood. The valley was exceedingly well timbered at a former period. Now, a place seemingly deer obsessed. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #railwayhistory #sculptureart #packhorsetrail #airvent

The beauty of Calderdale 81.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-2) Views over Walsden and towards Todmorden and rising up Allescholes Lane; Allescholes: An area of Walsden situated on the western hills above the valley, reached by a narrow lane that climbs and twists at alarming gradients and angles until it flattens out on a plateau and follows the line of the valley bottom southwards towards Reddishore Scout. The lane was an original packhorse trail linking Walsden with Calderbrook. It was replaced by the turnpike road that followed the valley bottom. Prior to that, the lane over Allescholes was the only route out of Walsden to Littleborough, Rochdale, and beyond. Allescholes boasts two separate farms, each with its own land and cottages. Both farms are ancient, and records show us they were there by 1475, farmed by a Geoffrey and Bernard Butterworth. In 1605 and onwards in that century, the Crossley name appeared in connection with it, and early in the eighteenth century, it was leased to the Fieldens and was passed to their descendents. A Kershaw family owned the land until after 1790, and each farm was always tenanted. 3-4) Lower Allescholes Farm, a farmhouse dated RH 1715, possibly for Richard Howard; 5) Friezland Farm, c.1850, no longer in agricultural use; 6-10) An 18th-century packhorse trail Milestone: Halifax 10 miles Todmorden 2 miles Burnley 9 miles Rochdale 7 miles #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #farmhouse #milestone #countrysideview #allescholes

The beauty of Calderdale 80.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1) The former Cross Keys public house (see The Beauty of Calderdale 77 for earlier cross keys mentions). Originally, a beer house was opened at Nip Square, Walsden about 1830, by Abraham Law, a Walsden clogger. When the new highway (now Rochdale Road) was built by the railroad company, his beerhouse lost the passing trade, so he built another beerhouse with 4 cottages facing the old beerhouse on the new highway. Initially, it was called the Cloggers Arms, but in 1848, it was renamed the Cross Keys. Nearby St Peter's Church was built around the same time (see previous post for details) ; 2) 687 Rochdale Rd. Thomas Jackson 1893-1915 lived here. In World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment and died 18th June 1915 (aged 22). He was buried at the Rue-Du-Bacquerot (13th London) Graveyard, Laventie, France [G 8], and on Todmorden War Memorial; 3) Once the main thoroughfare in Walsden; 4) Holly Bank, a Victorian house, now three homes; 5) Previously, The Primitive Methodist Jubilee Chapel, dated 1860; 6) The Border Rose, originally The Butcher's Arms, 1830, it finally became fully licensed in 1952, and in the 1980s, the name was changed to The Border Rose; 7) A milestone. Somedays, it seems like I'm never halfway to anywhere; 8) The Waggon and Horses, recorded in 1847 and once served as a terminus for the Todmorden & District Carriage Company Ltd; 9) A ghost sign for Parkinsons Pills of Burnley; 10) Finally, rising onto the hills and looking down towards Ramsden Wood Road. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #pubsofinstagram #lostpubs #ghostsignsuk #milestone

The beauty of Calderdale 79.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-10) St Peter's Church: A Million Pound Church designed by Charles Child in Gothic Revival style. It was consecrated on 7th August 1848, the spire was added by Charles Heyworth in 1864, and church was finally completed in 1875. The building was originally roofed with red London tiles. These proved unsuitable for the Walsden climate in keeping the church warm and were replaced with blue slate tiles. The nave and much of the building was destroyed by fire on 28th May 1948. The roof and stained glass windows were lost, but the spire was saved. The church was not insured. It was rebuilt and re-consecrated in 1956. The spire is a listed structure. 5) The grave of Private William Walton, 10027 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, died at Dardanelles, August 10th 1915, aged 19; and 6-9) The grave of Reuben and Susannah Haigh, and their son John William Haigh, born in Walsden 1850, and died in Ruabon, Wales 1901. He was the owner of the Ruabon Brick and Terracotta Works. The inscription reads: In Memory of JOHN WILLIAM HAIGH of Pen-y-Gardden, Ruabon, N. Wales and Pastureside, Walsden Born September 17th 1850 died July 9th 1901. On the scroll: "From the employees of the Ruabon and Terra Cotta Co. The beauty of Calderdale 78.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1) The former Birks Mill: There is evidence that a mill existed here in 1799, and the close proximity to a source of water for powering the mill from the numerous hillside cloughs made it an ideal location for a mill to be built. There was a datestone over the mill door. In 1917, it was on the ground in the yard waiting to be restored. The stone is engraved 1800 JSC (John & Sarah Crossley of Scaitcliffe Hall, the owners of the land on which it stands). It has been used for wool, worsted, and cotton spinning, manufacture, and weaving. It closed its doors in 1979 when the mill was mainly producing acrilic curtain materials, bedspreads, denims, and tickings. By 2008, plans had been made to convert it to apartments, but, to date, it remains unchanged and in a derelict state; 2) Walsden Parsonage, formerly the Vicarage for the nearby church. The foundation stone was laid in August 1857. It is now a private residence; 3-7) Cropley House, once Saint Peter's National School aka Walsden Parochial School. The building stands next to St Peter's Church. This school was established on 29th May 1847, St Michael's Day. It was completed on Whit Tuesday, 13th June 1848. It was later closed due to structural difficulties, but the building is now restored and converted for residential use. Note the cross keys (5), (The Beauty of Calderdale 80 will have a further cross keys connection); and 8-10) The lych gate to Saint Peter's Church, and fascinating patination on the rear of gravestones. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #derelict #repurposed #lychgate #gravestones

The beauty of Calderdale 77.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1) Not to my taste, and far too modern for me, but I'm sure the owners love it; 2-3) Mill houses along Hollins Rd; 4-6) Hollins Mount, built in 1860 by the Odd-Fellows Society. Fat at one end, thin at the other; 7) Hollins Mill, built around 1857. It had 4 storeys, 18 bays with a single storey weaving shed & 30,000 spindles. Some buildings were later demolished, and others are presently used by light industry; 8) If you look closely, the dark coloured building is twisted by subsidence but is still lived in; and 9-10) Inchfield Bottom United Methodist Chapel, built by the United Methodists Free Church in 1861 when the facilities at the United Methodist Free Church Sabbath School had become too small. Around 1890, the congregation of Thorngreese Methodist Chapel, Todmorden, moved here when that chapel closed. The church closed its doors for worship in September 2010, and the building was to be offered for sale. As yet, it remains unsold. *At this juncture, I turned left towards Walsden proper and its outskirts. Later, I would be walking to the right, from here, and heading up the tortuously steep Inchfield Rd (more of the coming knee pain to follow). #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #mill #redundantchurch #flatironbuilding #oddfellows

The beauty of Calderdale 76.... Lumbutts: The name comes from Old English and means the pool or lumb abutting a piece of land. 1) The Shepherd's Rest, looking as if it has been a pub for all of its existence. It was originally a hill top dwelling accommodating a working family. In the late 1830s and early 1840s, the family of Abraham Stansfield, a sawyer, lived there. By 1846, it was owned by James Greenwood, an eccentric of sorts and a great collector of oddities. He decided he wanted to share his collection for all to see, so he opened his home as a museum. To celebrate a great victory for the English against Russia in the Crimean War, James decided to celebrate the event by holding a gala at the museum on the 26th of August, 1854. Thousands attended and enjoyed a day of entertainment and dancing with music provided by the Heptonstall Drum and Fife Band, and at the end of the day, a great firework display representing the "Bombardment of Odessa" brought the day to a resoundingly noisy end. In 1859, a licence was granted to William Butterworth for a beer house. It remains a popular hostelry to this day; 2) A sitting stone behind Blarney Castle; 3-4) Blarney Castle, aka Shurcrack, once a small pleasure ground at the site of a cottage. No remaining evidence exists; 5) Towards Whirlaw Common; 6-7) Swineshead Farm and cottage, a mid-17th century property with a round-headed doorway, now divided into two homes; 8-9) Livestock. I did have to double-take the two sheep, although the left-hand one was looking particularly un-sheep-like; and 10) Whirlaw again, at the top, a glimpse of Todmorden Great Wall below. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #countrysideview #pubsofinstagram #cottages #farmanimals

The beauty of Calderdale 75.... Lumbutts: The name comes from Old English and means the pool or lumb abutting a piece of land. 1) The track to Lower Horsewood, although not much sign of either horses or wood; 2-3) Croft Farm, Langfield Pedigree Dorset Horns sheep-farmers, a late 16th century house, and barn; 4) Yet another barn conversion; 5-6) Croft Gate and Croft Gate East, dated 1598 to the road but with an unsympathetic extension to the rear dated 2019; 7) The Long Causeway, the former packhorse way in use for over 500 years from the early days of the woollen trade; and 8-11) An early 18th-century Milestone, easily dismissed as just another stone along the Long Causeway, Halifax 9 miles, Burnley 7 miles, and Rochdale 8 miles. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #longcauseway #milestone #cottages #countrysideview

The beauty of Calderdale 74.... Lumbutts: The name comes from Old English and means the pool or lumb abutting a piece of land. Turning right from Lumbutts Methodist Chapel (see The Beauty of Calderdale 69 for details) 1-4) Lumbutts Mill: Until 1783, this mill was a corn mill owned by John Crossley of Scaitcliffe Hall when it was converted for cotton spinning. The later cotton mill owned by the Fielden family was designed by William Fairbairn around 1830 see Samuel Fielden. The Fieldens extended the mill and built the waterwheel tower. At first, the tower housed two and then c.1846 a unique sequence of three overshot water wheels, one above the other, each 6 ft wide and 30½ ft in diameter which powered the mill. The water fell 90 ft, and the wheels generated about 54 horse power. Four dams were built to supply water power to the mill. The chimney is 98 ft high, and there is a spiral staircase inside. The tower is a listed building. An overhead ropeway was built to connect this mill to nearby Jumb Mill to transfer materials from one to the other. The mill closed in 1926, and other than the tower and chimney demolished. It is now an activity centre. The plan of the wheels is borrowed from the website of 'Power in the Landscape; 5) The mill race; 6) Cottage living; 7-8) The sundial made by James Travis Whittaker and installed on the wall of a house opposite Lumbutts Factory School where he was schoolmaster; 9) A rural shed; and 10) Causeway West, an early 18th-century farmhouse, converted into two cottages. At the rear is a barn inscribed IMK 1711. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #sundial #waterwheeltower #manufacturinghistory #cottages

The beauty of Calderdale 73.... Stoodley: An area of Langfield. The name is mentioned in 1238. The word is said to mean horse pasture. 1-2) Some days you come across a stile that you just have to use, even if there's no real need to. I used this one in both directions and enjoyed every moment of it. What that says about me, I'm unsure, but it is what it is; 3) Again, looking towards Stoodley Pike; 4) A building of unknown use in a field. I'm going with a folly but would appreciate it if anyone could clarify its purpose; 5) A rural drinks concession; 6-7) Stoodley Hall Coach House and Barn, now separated from the hall, the coach house has been converted into residential use. The barn looks to still be used as there is no evidence of a changed purpose. Note the no-longer used mounting block from times when the coach house would have been an active place; 8) Stoodley Hall, it is part of a group of property comprising Stoodley Hall Cottages and Lower Stoodley Farm from the mid to late 18th century. It appears that the house is built over an earlier 17th-century house, which retains some double chamfered mullioned windows now to the cellars. Above, these there is a weathered plinth and different walling. A stone lying loose is recorded as inscribed: 'REBUILT 1587', suggesting an even earlier property on this site; and 9-10) Stoodley Hunting Lodge, an 18th-century house, recorded as having eleven rooms. *Next, turning right from Lumbutts Methodist Chapel (see The Beauty of Calderdale 69 for details) to explore Lumbutts, Walsden, and onwards. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #huntinglodge #stile #coachhouse #mountingblock

The beauty of Calderdale 72.... Stoodley: An area of Langfield. The name is mentioned in 1238. The word is said to mean horse pasture. 1) Another view towards Stoodley Pike; 2) Cross Farm, standing just beyond the Mankinholes Cross field and separating Mankinholes from Stoodley; 3-4) Causeway East Farmhouse, recorded in 1690 and rebuilt in the early 19th century. Above the lintel, at the rear door, is the word 'Dairy' from days when this was a working farm. No cows in evidence nowadays; 5-6) Fielden House and laithe-house, a mid-18th century property with a converted barn alongside; 7-9) Stoodley Grange, once the Fielden Joint Hospital, it was a hospital for infectious diseases established by the Fielden family and other benefactors in Todmorden. The buildings (L-R) were erected in 1892 and 1905, now converted into housing. The building in the latter two images was the Nurse's Home for the hospital facility; and 10) Higher Stoodley Farmhouse, c.1770. A Mr. Horsfall lived here and wrote several poems, including one about a concert at Hebden Bridge in 1892. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #farmhouse #hospital #repurposed #stoodleypike

The beauty of Calderdale 71.... Mankinholes: The area was settled by Norsemen in the 10th century and is first mentioned as Mancanholes in 1275. The name comes from Mancan's holh and means the hollow of Mancan. Mancan is an Irish name and may have come to the district from the Norse colonies in Ireland. It was once a halt for cattle drovers and evolved into a community of hand loom weavers. One of the first recorded Quaker meetings in the area was held at the home of Joshua Laycock in 1667. 1-3) The Old Farmhouse and cottage, both dating to the late 16th century; 4) Barely glimpsed through the undergrowth, Pilkington Farmhouse, another 16th century house, the farm was used as a Quaker meeting house in the 17th century; 5-6) The Sunday School for Mankinholes Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built by subscription in 1833, now a private house. The graveyard behind still has public access; 7) Little fluffy clouds, sadly not in the sky on the day of my stroll; and 8-10) The Mankinholes Cross, of indeterminate age, is located in a field once used for religious gatherings. Stoodley Pike dominates the landscape! #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #farmhouse #farmhousecottage #sundayschool #cross

The name comes from Mancan's holh and means the hollow of Mancan. Mancan is an Irish name and may have come to the district from the Norse colonies in Ireland. It was once a halt for cattle drovers and evolved into a community of hand loom weavers. One of the first recorded Quaker meetings in the area was held at the home of Joshua Laycock in 1667. 1) The view towards Lydgate railway viaduct. The name, Lydgate, may be derived from Old English meaning a false gate, or a back door; 2) A water trough on a former packhorse way. It consists of four linked rectangular troughs, and at each end is a circular basin with an outlet for the water, and used to cool milk churns. The trough is thought to date from the 18th century; 3) Looking back towards Stoodley Pike; 4-5) Mankinholes: A house dated HS 1690; 6) Mankinholes Farm, built in 1668 and further extended in the 18th century; and 7-10) Mankinholes Hall, a late 16th century house, enlarged in the 19th century. It was the home of William Ingham, a farmer who was Overseer for Langfield, the local area, (see previous posts for further details). In 1838, he was fined under the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834 for refusing to pay his rates towards the new Union Workhouse, objecting to this treatment of the poor. Two special constables attempted to seize his property and sparked off the Mankinholes riots. Since the 1940s, it has been managed as overnight accommodation by the Youth Hostel Association. The building in (10) was once the Gents lavatory. Sadly, the site is presently for sale by the YHA. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #mankinholes #watertrough #youthhostel #countrysideview

The beauty of Calderdale 69.... Lumbutts: The name comes from Old English and means the pool or lumb abutting a piece of land. 1-10) The United Methodist Free Church: Originally, the Wesleyan Association Chapel opened on July 9th, 1837, after local dissenters withdrew from the nearby Methodist Society at Mankinholes. The new chapel prospered, and by 1877, the old building was demolished and replaced with the present larger building with a school on the ground floor underneath the chapel. Lumbutts Methodist Church is also home to "The Old Lady of Lumbutts," a huge, hundred year old church organ which was renovated in 1989 at a cost of £11,500 raised by local villagers. Some of the stained glass comes from the demolished Mankinholes Chapel. Lumbutts chapel closed for worship in 2013, although the burial ground remains open. *Leaving here, I turned left towards Mankinholes.
