I just came across this very confusing photo. The signatures are from sisters Viola Dana, Edna Flugrath and Shirley Mason. However, the women in the photo are Blanche Mehaffey, Beth Darlington and (I think) Marie Mosquini. This is why it is so important to correctly identify photos. Part of my “job” over the last 13 years is to try and correct things like this and convey that not everything you find on the internet is correct. During the 1920s, Gareth Hughes (born August 23, 1894) enjoyed steady success as the lead in a handful of silent melodramas, notably opposite Viola Dana in "The Chorus Girl’s Romance" (1920), for Metro Pictures, who he was later signed to contract. His best role was on loan to Famous Players Lasky for "Sentimental Tommy" (1921). • Next came the comedy "I Can Explain" (1922), opposite Bartine Burkett; "The Christian" (1923), with Richard Dix and Mae Busch; and the Pola Negri historical romance vehicle "The Spanish Dancer" (1924), with Antonio Moreno and Wallace Beery. • By mid-decade, his fortunes swiftly changed, made worse still with the advent of ‘Talkies’ and the Stock Market Crash of 1929, which left him penniless. Gareth continued to find work in films where he could until 1931, when he returned to his first love, the theatre. • Born William John Hughes into a working-class family in Dafen, Carmarthenshire, Wales, he started off in repertory theatre, which brought him out to America. Whereas the tour wasn’t a success, Gareth got noticed, and was spotted by a talent scout in Chicago who persuaded him to try his luck and stay on in the U.S. By the end of 1915, he’d found his feet on Broadway. • During the 1940s, Gareth experienced a religious calling. Adopting the name of Brother David, from 1944, he spent 14-years as a Christian missionary to the Paiute Indians on the Pyramid Lake Resevation of Nevada. • In 1958, he returned to his boyhood home in Llanelli, Wales, only to return to the U.S. to see out his final years at The Motion Picture Fund actors’ home in Woodland Hills, California, where he died in October 1965, aged 71, of complications from byssinosis, a lint-born respiratory disease he contracted from years of sorting donated clothing at Pyramid Lake. • Two documentaries on his life have been produced, the first in 2000, and then second in 2008, by his relative Kelvin Guy, called "In Search of Gareth Hughes". Silent film star Viola Dana as featured in the 1924 film REVELATION. Born Virginia Flugrath on June 26, 1897 in Brooklyn, NY, where she was raised, she was the middle sister of three siblings who all became actresses (Edna Flugrath and Shirley Mason). With the stage name of Viola Dana, she entered films in 1910, including “A Christmas Carol” (1910). Her success in features such as “Children of Eve” (1915) and “The Cossack Whip” (1916) encouraged producer B.A. Rolfe to offer a lucrative contract with his company, Rolfe Photoplays, which released through Metro Pictures Corporation. In 1916 she made several films for Rolfe/Metro, notably “The Girl Without a Soul” and “Blue Jeans” (both 1917). She continued to turn in great performances, particularly as Katie O'Doone in “Bred in Old Kentucky” (1926). She retired from the screen in 1929, her final screen credits in “Two Sisters” (1929) and “One Splendid Hour” (1929). By the time she made her final film appearance in 1933, she had appeared in over 100 films. She briefly came out of retirement to appear in her first and only television role in a small part on Lux Video Theatre in 1956. Much later on, Viola appeared in the Kevin Brownlow/David Gill documentary series “Hollywood” (1980), discussing her career as a silent film star during the 1920s. Footage from the interview was used in the later documentary series “Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow” (1987) from the same team. In later years, she volunteered at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, and she moved there permanently in 1979. In 1986 she was the subject of a documentary short by Anthony Slide titled “Vi: Portrait of a Silent Star”, in which she talks of her life and career. Era lectora de Shakespeare y se encontraba particularmente identificada con la adolescente Julieta. Con 16 años participó en la producción de David Belasco Poor Little Rich Girl 16. Posteriormente actuó en el vodevil junto a Dustin Farnum en The Little Rebel, además de hacer un pequeño papel en The Model, de Augustus Thomas. Dana se inició en el cine en 1910. Su primera película se rodó en Manhattan, convirtiéndose en una estrella de los Estudios Edison. Allí se enamoró de John Hancock Collins, director de la plantilla del estudio, con el cual se casó en 1915. El éxito de Dana en películas de Collins como Children of Eve (1915) y The Cossack Whip (1916) hizo que el productor B. A. Rolfe ofreciera a la pareja unos lucrativos contratos con su compañía, Rolfe Photoplays, la cual estrenaba con el sello de Metro Pictures.
