I just had a 22 hour vacation (counting driving time) that could have been one of my best ever! I started shooting the Aurora Borealis last night (link at end) around 10p. I stopped around 3a. Slept for 2 hours, then got up and started shooting around the Islands in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park in Moab. I stopped shooting today around 4pm. In the 16-hours shooting window, I was able to do the following: shoot the northern lights, rock climbers, hike to Corona Arch, try to move Balanced Rock with my awesome strength, shoot sunrise, shoot a Blue Heron fishing, photograph a rainbow, go on a 3-hour backcountry 4-wheeling drive on Shafer Trail Road, shoot blooming cacti, overcome my fear of heights, view amazing scenes, photograph a dog wearing sunglasses, and make friends with 2 ladies from Brazil. I had a terrific morning on the lake, well technically, Deer Creek Reservoir. While paddling, I noticed an Osprey nest near the banks. That is the first thing I went to when I got out of the water. I observed for about 45 minutes. A male and a female were in the nest. The male left and came back a minute later with a big fish. They ate part of it together and then the male took the tail of the fish and at the rest of it on an electrical pole. I have pictures of them sharing the fish in the nest as well as the male alone with the remnants in his claws. It was a marvelous morning on Deer Creek Reservoir. The water was still and there were a lot of birds on the water and in the marshes. I saw a cinnamon colored duck that, as it turns out, is called a Cinnamon Teal duck, that I have never seen before. I am including a few pix. I couldn't get close enough to get good pix of it. I also got a demonic looking Merganser with big read eyes. There were lots of Coots. I also had a goose spying on my from the marshy brush. I also shot a Peregrine Falcon sitting on eggs in the nest. A WHOLE LOTTA DUCKIN' GOING ON I had a "Mutual of Omaha" nature experience this evening after kayaking on Utah Lake, I saw a male and female duck out in the water acting like I have not seen before. They were touching beaks (see 1st pic). Then they started dipping their beaks in the water at the same time and in a specific rhythm (see 2nd pic). After about 6 dips of the beaks, things turned, the female turned slightly, and then the to joined together for a moment of mating. After they both smoked a cigarette, they flew to another area of the lake where about 50 mixed gendered ducks were congregated because a man was feeding them (see 3rd pic). I guess they had the munchies. I decided to walk over as some ducks were on the ground get bread and some remained in the water. The man left at about the same time. I spent the next hour observing the behavior of the ducks. It was evident that the ducky hormones were raging. Males were fighting each other while some of the females were enjoying their shenanigans. There were a few females who were NOT appreciative of the attention. I watch one couple for about 5 minutes. The male would approach her, she would swim away. He did again, and she swam faster. Finally, after about 8 iterations of this, she finally flew away from him and ended the nonsense (see 4th pic).
