After Pictured Rocks we headed south to check out Kitch-iti-kipi, which means The Big Spring. Michiganβs largest freshwater spring has some very unique features. Itβs 40β deep and super clear. You can easily see to the bottom where the sand bubbles as 10,000 gallons of freshwater come up from the spring every minute. Huge trout swim in the spring and itβs surrounded by huge pine trees. The state park has a neat self-operated raftβitβs on a cable so you can pull yourself across the spring & back, plus it has a glass bottom for easy viewing. The first day we tried to visit there was a 2 hour wait for the raft. So we went back first thing the next morning and a handful of us who arrived early hopped on the raft and explored together. Although weβve stayed in Harvest Host locations without hook-ups, this was our real first boondocking experience where we showed up to a free, first-come first-served campground in hopes of finding a spot. And we were successful! After driving through one area of the lake and striking out (and having to navigate a tight circular turn-around!), we went to the other side and had better luck. Rather than drive the RV through the narrow, bumpy roads leading to the campsites, Alex got on his bike and explored the area. We ended up with a great spot, although super buggy, and spent two nights there, for free! We chose this spot due to its location near Bond Falls and it did not disappoint! The campgrounds are provided by the Upper Peninsula Power Company who use the dam to generate power, which in turn created the falls. Check out the summer fireworks of Solidago juncea, aka Early Goldenrod.! Goldenrod is essential for pollinators, butterflies, and birds. Early Goldenrod, as its name implies, starts the bonanza of goldenrod nectar earlier than its relatives with fireworks-style blooms that can start in July. Composite flowers are mildly fragrant, showy, and make a good cut flower. Goldenrods have been wrongly accused of causing hay fever which is actually an allergic reaction to wind-borne pollen from other plants such as ragweed. Early Goldenrod prefers medium sandy loam and full sun, but will tolerate dry, clay, or rocky soil and part sun. Successful under jack pine. Typically 2 feet tall, it can get a bit taller depending on conditions. Spreads by rhizome but is polite when given competition by neighboring plants. Very attractive to pollinators and butterflies while resistant to deer. The timing of this goldenrod's bloom makes it a good nectar source for Monarchs laying their last eggs or preparing to migrate. According to the National Wildlife Federation's list for our ecoregion, this is one of our best Keystone habitat plants. Plants in this family are used by 120 species of caterpillar as a host plant. Since most birds feed their young almost exclusively on caterpillars during nesting season, utilizing this plant in your landscape is a great way to support birds. The moment I knew things had to change: I loved my job working as the office manager at an assisted living home. My schedule was flexible, Rob and I had the same work days, & I truly felt like I was contributing to make people's lives better. But then I went to report to the home manager about a project he had asked me to implement for the residents and their families. It was going great and I was so happy to share the positive results He looked at me and said, deadpan, "Well, thanks for doing your job." True, I WAS doing my job. But I had also put a ton of extra work into this additional project that HE had asked me to kick off. There was no bragging, I was simply reporting to him about something *he* wanted done. But he didn't even care. Did I drop everything, tell him what I really thought of him, & drive away? No, for better or worse I'm too responsible for that. But that WAS the moment everything came into clear view. I wasn't really a valued member of the staff. I was just a convenient person they knew was too much of a workaholic to say no - the person they could trust to answer the phone and handle paperwork and scheduling even on my days "off." Work-life balance - what was that? It was a toxic lifestyle. Rob and I left in 2015 & have been self-employed ever since. It hasn't always been easy, but we've never regretted it. There are seasons of busy and seasons of rest, but we are so grateful to have work we truly enjoy! Even the busiest seasons are SO much better than sitting in that soulless office.
