My TBM stepmother and I were recently having a discussion on finances. She mentioned how, in a time of uncertainty, she discovered a large sum of money put away in an account that she was unaware of. I don’t think modern day Christians have argued more over a verse than this one and others that speak of our tithe to the Lord. “Tithe” literally means 10 percent of what you have earned. In the days of Malchi, much of their earnings was goods and food that they used to barter for other things. That amounted each year to their “earnings”. For most of us, it is money we earn from our employment or business. God has asked us to bring our tithe to Him, which usually is the church we attend. He doesn’t mean our time, our good thoughts and prayers. He means our wages. So, why do we make so many excuses not to obey Him in this? I don’t have the money right now, I don’t like what my church spends it on, I don’t have enough to give to God and everything else I owe. These are all just ways of telling God that He is not faithful enough to be trusted with our money. We know better than He does what to do with it. We have made our money our god. If you struggle in this, I encourage you to come before the and ask Him to forgive you for putting your money above Him. Tell Him you are sorry. Ask Him cleanse you of this sin and to empower you to do the right thing, to trust Him with your money. God gave you that job. He is allowing you to keep 90 percent of what you earn! The US government takes more than that. If we argue against this request from God, then we need to check our hearts. Whom do we really serve? God or money? God challenges us in this verse to trust Him. Give your tithe. He will be faithful. Trust Him in this.

What is the true meaning of Malachi 3:10, which preaches love to use to manipulate Christians? 👇🏻 ‼️CONTEXT 👉🏻 This passage was addressing the Israelites’ disobedience on tithing, part of the rules God gave the Jews under the theocracy (Leviticus 27:30, 32). Far from enriching select individuals, the tithe supported the Levites, who had no inheritance (see Numbers 18:21). It also provided for widows, foreigners, and orphans (Deuteronomy 14:28–29). When Malachi wrote his book as an oracle of God, the Jews had neglected this command, among many others. One can only imagine the societal chaos that ensued. ‼️ DO WE APPLY IT TODAY? We must first consider the bridge between the Old Testament Jews and us. Christians are not under the same covenant as the Jews were, thanks to Jesus (Hebrews 8). We DO NOT LIVE under a theocracy, and the blessings for Christians are primarily spiritual rather than material (Ephesians 1:3). Moreover, tithing is RARELY mentioned in the New Testament, and it is never commanded for the church. Jesus mentioned tithes ONLY in Luke 11:42, rebuking the Pharisees for neglecting justice and God’s love while diligently observing the tithe command. Paul NEVER uses the word “tithing”. ‼️ We are commanded to give generously and with the cheerful heart (Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:6–7; 1 Corinthians 16:2), because it is in our heart where sin begins, not in our deeds. A true, reborn believer has a new, transformed heart and it is reflected in his/her deeds. Tithing is not legally binding on Christians due to the New Covenant we are under. Our debt is PAID on the cross, and it is through faith that we are saved, NOT WORKS AND OBEYING THE LAW. After Jesus’ work on the cross, Acts and the Epistles do not impose a compulsory 10 percent tithing on Christians. We cannot earn salvation with tithing. Give, give, give! I know times are hard, expenses are up. Everyone is struggling. I get it. But give anyways. That’s one thing that God tells us to test him on. If you can’t do the full 10% then start with 5% and build up from there. But I will tell you if you make it nonnegotiable, and the very first thing that comes out when you get paid, you will be taken care of. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not prosperity preachin’ here, just speaking from experience. We’ve had some roller coaster months with constant car repairs with our cars, BUT GOD PROVIDES. Most churches and organizations have automatic drafts, if that helps you stay consistent. We set up our tithe, monthly missionary giving and we support a child over seas, all on automatic draft, so we don’t miss a payment, and it comes out FIRST .
