Fifty years later, the drawings were rediscovered in the archives of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the university commissioned #thomasphiferandpartners to adapt the building for educational purposes. Built as a single-story, 180-foot-long rectangular glass pavilion, 28 feet wide, the design palette of glass, steel, black carbonized bamboo flooring and white walls set the tone for the streamlined interior spaces. A reflecting pool extends outside to the terrace, while an indoor/outdoor moss garden mirrors the surrounding grounds. A canopy extends around the perimeter of the structure to create shade, and six skylights are the only overhead lighting in the home. A geothermal system controls heating and cooling, rooting the house in its environment. Four Rounds: Equal Weight, Unequal Measure, 2017, Richard Serra - Like other recent pieces in Serra’s “Equal Weight, Unequal Measure” series, “Four Rounds” can be seen as a return to the sculptor’s roots in process art, a movement of artists who valued the procedures of making objects over the final result. “The significance of the work is in its effort, not its intentions,” the sculptor once said. Each of the solid rounds is 82 tons, which is not an arbitrary number. It’s the maximum weight possible at the foundry that fabricated the pieces, and thus an essential limitation of the process. The cylinders are literally as big as they can be. Despite weighing the same and having the same shape, each one of the four fabrications is a different height and circumference. The totality is a study in solid geometry, demonstrating the various ways an almost-identical thing can be made different. More than a quartet could have been devised, but four is a sufficient illustration of the principle. Each one is unlike the others, yet equivalent. This theoretical point is intriguing, if less engaging than the pockmarked patinas that also differentiate the four rounded forms. As arranged here, the cylinders can be walked through and around. But they don’t offer as complex a spatial experience as “Sylvester” or others of Serra’s spiraling ellipses. Four Rounds: Equal Weight, Unequal Measure, 2017, Richard Serra - Like other recent pieces in Serra’s “Equal Weight, Unequal Measure” series, “Four Rounds” can be seen as a return to the sculptor’s roots in process art, a movement of artists who valued the procedures of making objects over the final result. “The significance of the work is in its effort, not its intentions,” the sculptor once said. Each of the solid rounds is 82 tons, which is not an arbitrary number. It’s the maximum weight possible at the foundry that fabricated the pieces, and thus an essential limitation of the process. The cylinders are literally as big as they can be. Despite weighing the same and having the same shape, each one of the four fabrications is a different height and circumference. The totality is a study in solid geometry, demonstrating the various ways an almost-identical thing can be made different. More than a quartet could have been devised, but four is a sufficient illustration of the principle. Each one is unlike the others, yet equivalent. This theoretical point is intriguing, if less engaging than the pockmarked patinas that also differentiate the four rounded forms. As arranged here, the cylinders can be walked through and around. But they don’t offer as complex a spatial experience as “Sylvester” or others of Serra’s spiraling ellipses. Sylvester, 2001, Richard Serra • Sylvester is named for David Sylvester, a British art critic and friend of Serra’s, who passed away shortly before the 2001 Gagosian exhibition Torqued Spirals, Toruses, and Spheres. Sylvester is part of the Torqued Spiral series, and the full piece consists of 5 self-supporting steel panels, weighing a total of 225,000 pounds, or 112.5 tons. The installation of Sylvester was part of the planning process during the first phase of Glenstone; the curves of the Gallery building and the sculpture echo one another. Charles Gwathmey, Glenstone’s first architect, worked with the founders in selecting the placement of the work and the building; Serra weighed in on its placement as well. There are a number of echo spots that create different sound effects within the work, and the piece radiates heat absorbed from sunshine. In 2001, Serra remarked, “I like how [Sylvester] cuts the sky.” From the Artist “Steel was such a traditional material I wasn’t going near it... Village Series, 2021, Simone Leigh • In Room 9 of the Pavilions, Glenstone presents Village Series, 2021, a sculpture by Simone Leigh (American, b. 1967). Leigh has worked in sculpture, video, performance, and social practice, centering her work on Black femme subjectivity. Leigh’s practice is informed by her interest in African and African American art, as well as her background in philosophy, cultural studies, and Black feminist thought. Village Series stands over seven feet tall and demonstrates Leigh’s command of technically challenging materials, for which the artist has gained renown. Horse and rider, 2018, Charles Ray • It represents the artist riding a horse. Horse and rider evokes the classical figure of the equestrian statue, a “canon” invented in antiquity, notably through the statue of Emperor Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, and further developed during the Renaissance through honorific representations of condottiere (warlords), like Donatello’s Gattamelata in Padua and Verrochio’s statue of Colleone in Venice. As usual, Charles Ray makes use of the models to hand, and the easiest to find, is of course, himself. Subverting a statuary associated with power and magnificence, Horse and rider inverses all of its codes, undermining in the process the manifesto of assurance and virility traditionally evoked by the genre. In place of a majestic, haughty figure in motion, the figure of the artist seated and hunched on his immobile steed, appears somewhat powerless: “I am not a rider and the horse knows it. I tried to sculpt my nervousness as well as that of the horse” m. And for good reason: the artist omitted to sculpt the reins, allowing the rider to steer the horse. Horse and rider does not commemorate any battle, nor does it showcase its model. As is often the case with the artist, the aim is more to question a “type” in the history of sculpture, in order to better bear witness to its plastic value over time: “I see large archaic or classical sculptures as contemporary. When it came to furnishing the Pavilions, designed by Tom Phifer, it was important that the furniture also be exceptional, and fit with the overall museum philosophy and design. During a visit to the studio of Martin Puryear, one of the artists collected by the Rales and prominently showcased in the museum, a chair caught the eye of Emily Rales. Learning that it was designed by Puryear himself, she invited the artist to design the seating for the non-exhibiting areas of the museum. Known for his elaborate sculptures that are at once abstract and yet resonant with historical and political meanings, craftsmanship has always been an important element in Puryear’s work. Since an early age he has dabbled in making boats, musical instruments and other objects. He has also long been interested in furniture design, creating pieces for his own use. He sees these as an exercise in a form of making similar to sculpture although with a rather different purpose. Puryear commented at the opening last year: “I fully accept the functional requirement for furniture, as an opportunity rather than as a constraint”. Another important distinction is between furniture created for personal use and furniture for a broader public. “I had to put aside assumptions behind the domestic work I’d become accustomed to making and began to think about what it can mean to create objects to be used by a succession of strangers,” said Puryear. To help develop his ideas, the artist enlisted the assistance of award-winning designer Michael Hurwitz, known for his elegant designs and exceptional craftsmanship. Water Double, 2013-2016, Roni Horn • The 2017 survey exhibition Roni Horn in the Gallery explored the artist’s (b. 1955) interest in intermingling material and context, seen here with her installation of Water Double, v.3, 2013–2015, which incorporates the surrounding light, architecture, water court, and viewer into the work itself. The sculpture is considered by the artist to be one of her greatest achievements—it was long her goal to achieve a neutral “water double,” a solid cast glass duo in black and white.
