It's been quite wet here in the Hawkesbury for the last 10 days or so. The gardens are having a good soak, and the chooks look like drowned rats 🫢🤣 we've been slowly building a new garden fence in the last week. Dahlia tubers are packed away until spring 😊 I waited for the plants to start dying off. They had stopped producing flowers, and the leaves were turning brown with no new growth. I dug up the tubers, dusted the soil off them, and layered them in wood shavings in a cardboard box. Brussels sprouts are now planted 😄🌱 this garden bed was filled halfway with decomposed mulch. I then topped the bed with fresh garden soil, compost, worm castings, and pea straw. This mornings progress! ☀️ I headed outside as the sun was rising and the heavy fog was hanging around. I had cleared the beds and paths over the last couple of weeks, but I found after a few days, I'd be clearing weeds and grass again within the garden beds and along the paths! Our base for the ground below the beds had absolutely failed. We originally used black plastic which was now in pieces. I originally removed the black plastic along the paths and as I did, I realised the wood mulch along the paths had decomposed quite alot! Perfect, this is where my plan changed. I shovelled out all the decent soil from the four beds affected by weeds and grass and put it aside, lifted the beds up and moved them out of the garden, I raked back all the mulch and any soil left behind to level out the garden area as much as possible. I laid down an entirely new cardboard base, arranged my beds back to where they originally were, although I adjusted a couple slightly as they were crooked before. I'm now using the decomposed mulch, and the not so good soil to fill the very bottom of my garden beds. I'll then top up all of the beds with fresh soil, compost, worm castings, manure and pea straw. I'm hoping I have just enough chicken wire to wrap around the metal stakes that border the garden area as a temporary fence so the chooks don't dive in once I start planting! I'll finally be planting out more of my Winter vegetables and flowers this afternoon and tomorrow - just in time for the rain we have forecast in the coming week! I finally cleared the last of the weeds and grass out of the entire garden. My goodness, I somehow managed to smash this out within an hour! Today, I cleared the last of the garden beds and ripped up the black plastic along the pathways. You can see there's a little bit left along the edges of the garden beds. White cabbage moths 🌿🦋 There's plenty of them around at the moment, you've probably seen them pop up and flutter about your garden. They're a white and grey coloured moth, although they look more like a butterfly. They're pretty, but can cause alot of damage in your garden! The caterpillars that hatch from their eggs leave irregular bites and holes throughout the leaves of your plants and a trail of brown/black poop behind. If one plant has plenty of caterpillars on them, they will munch those leaves down to the stem until there's nothing left! Last year's mild winter, and humid summer, have created the perfect environment for these little guys to flourish. 🌱 What do they do, and why is it a problem? White cabbage moths will flutter about your garden, and lay their eggs amongst the greenery of your flowers and vegetables, especially brassicas, they LOVE brassicas! It's very hard to see these eggs, and once they're laid, there's going to be some trouble. These eggs hatch into little green and brown caterpillars that can decimate your garden as if they're at an all you can eat buffet. 🌱How can I stop or deter them? Prevention is key here. The biggest tips I have are.. - Net and protect your crop before they lay their eggs, this is the best step to take that's most effective. Net your crop as soon as you plant them out! - Plant companion plants and decoy plants nearby. Nasturtiums, dill, mustard, rosemary, sage, chamomile, mint, and onions are all aromatic plants. They can help deter white cabbage moths from the vegetables you are wanting to keep safe, especially your brassicas. They can work by deterring them all together, and encourage them to lay their eggs onto your decoy plants instead of your vegetables that you're wanting to protect. My example of this is my own garden is that I've got an established nasturtium plant that they're preferring over other plants. When the caterpillars hatch and eat, they will eat the decoy plants that they hatch on, instead of the vegetables I don't want them to touch. I spent roughly an hour in the garden this morning before it got too hot! 😁☀️🌿 I cleared more of the pumpkin patch - so close! I have one more large bed to clear! I tidied up the dahlia bed and trimmed back any dead flowers/wilting leaves to enhance air flow, and I also weeded around the edge of the bed 🌼🌸🌺 Got rid of 3 wheel barrow loads of plants/weeds/grass so far. The amount of grass and weeds that grew up through my garden beds over Spring and Summer was SO disheartening! Hoping for a better result this Winter 🌱 The archway still has nasturtiums at the base, and I'm leaving them for the bees. Arietty leading the way into the pumpkin patch 🧡🐥 we've had an up and down summer here. One day, it would be 44°, hot and dry. The next day, it would be heavy rain and very humid. My garden didn't know whether to mould or burn. Sometimes, it did both. I planted 4 butternut pumpkin plants, with the intention to trellis them, and also thinking 1 or 2 plants would fail to thrive... neither happened 😅 all 4 plants flourished and quickly took over the entire garden area as I grew slower and rounder with our second babe, I didn't get out into the garden as much as I wanted to. Arietty and I have already cleared a good chunk of the summer jungle, and she and Mavis have been scratching up the garden beds! This weekend, I'll be jumping back in to clear the last of the pumpkin plants. We're most definitely in a Summer heatwave! Today hit 44 degrees here in the Hawkesbury 🥵🔥 What can you do to prepare your garden and help it get through the heatwave? 🌧💧 If possible, give your garden a good thorough watering first thing in the morning. This will help it get through the hottest part of the day. Once the sun has passed over and the day starts to cool off, water thoroughly again to give your garden some relief and help it through the night. Try not to water at the hottest part of the day, especially directly on the leaves! This could cause them to burn in the sun. Use a hose, a sprinkler, or even a soaker hose if you are time poor. 🌿🌱 Mulch your garden! Sugar cane mulch and pea straw are great options. Mulching your garden beds will help the soil retain moisture, will keep the beds slightly cooler, and help them get through the hot days. ☀️🌻 Offer shelter! Shade sails, hessian material, and even bed sheets will help protect your garden during the hottest part of the day. You can support these materials with star pickets, stakes, and bamboo. If you grow in pots, tubs, or buckets, move them to a shaded area if possible or sit them in a saucer of water for the hot days. ☘️🪱 As we're moving through the hot days, give your garden a sporadic evening feed with diluted liquid fertiliser like harvest, worm tea, or any seaweed based feed. Directly water it into the base of your plants and straight into the soil, try not to hit the leaves. Todays garden extension progress! 😄☀️ It was such nice weather, and not too hot! 🌱 Lined each wooden bed with cardboard on the ground, and plastic along the wood sides. 🌿 Filled the 2 wooden beds and 2 metal beds with veggie soil mix. 🌱 Covered the walkways with mulch. 🌿 Did plenty of weeding around the garden edges, and along the fences. 🌱 Shooed the chickens away from the vegetables 100 times 😆 We still have 2 more wooden beds to build and fill, 1 metal bed to fill and I'll also be using 4x half wine barrels to fill the space where I'm standing while taking these photos. I'll top up the current beds that are growing vegetables and flowers with fresh soil as they've been settling, and all beds will then be topped with sugar cane mulch. I'm excited for this space to flourish! It's the day during Winter where we don't see as much sunlight as we're used to. The sun rises later, and it sets earlier.
