Iโve had a lot of really engaging conversations lately, of course about swimming, and one of my favorites has been with Tom Walker, Pacific Northwest Association of Masters Swimmers writer and content to The WetSet. I am thrilled for my story to be featured as a Swimmer Spotlight Extra, for the May/June 2024 edition! Tom and I talked about everything, but what I loved most is how engaging he was. Big week last week in the healing and getting back to normal process, crossed the 10,000yds cumulative for the week mark! Distances completed were 750m and 1.9k at Swansea Bay yesterday. Before this journey, I always thought swimming was an individual sport. I was so wrong. These kids train together side-by-side 6 days a week and sometimes twice in one day, they become best friends and then they compete in the same races, and then turn around and race together in relays. I see these kids compete in the same heat as their teammates and then be genuinely happy for each other when they finish. They stand deck-side and loudly yell and cheer for one another and be as excited for other swimmers and their races almost as if they just swam it themselves. I had some of his teammates approach me over the weekend to tell me how excited they were that Isaac was killing it. On the drive home, Isaac not only talked about how proud he was of himself, but he was so happy when he talked about his friends and their accomplishments and time drops. I am so glad this is the sport that Isaac fell in love with. He has learned the value of hard work, goal-setting, and he has learned how to be happy for people who are out-performing him (even swimmers from other clubs that he's gotten to know from racing them regularly at meets). That last one is a skill that not a lot of people learn in their lifetime. We had a great weekend of racing and friendship-building and it has made all of the hard work totally worth it. #swimfriends #swimmeet #competitiveswimmer
