Talking to my children about my cystic fibrosis is something I have done from the very beginning. Pre school they attended clinic with me, they visit me in hospital and in the past have helped with home IVs. I give them chance to ask questions and always answer fully to their level of understanding. I had to be a child who understood my disease and sadly they need to as well. It’s ever present, I’m always swallowing pills/doing feeds/nebbing/coughing… they can’t miss it so they need to know what’s going on. However. This was all great and fine till things went south, but now hypothetical occasional mentions of death from cf in the future to prepare them are no longer appropriate. Discussing experimental treatment and back up plans in earshot of them wouldn’t be fair either so we don’t, but they’re very astute and know things are not peachy. I don’t want my CF to fill their minds anymore than it has to, and the mental strain John and I are going through whilst everything is so uncertain wouldn’t be fair on them so I pick and choose what to tell them now. Fortunately there is a lot of help available for children with a very sick parent. My hospital has books to help children understand their parent’s transplant which I may well use when the time comes. For now the school have really leaned in to support them process the changes they’re witnessing, whilst maintaining normality. School is their start to life and my health can’t disrupt their education and friendships. I’m not willing to publicly share but if you’re a parent in my shoes I’m happy to chat in DMs about what support is available. Antimicrobials is an umbrella term that describes classes of medications, including antibiotics, antivirals, anti-fungals and anti-parasitics. These medications are used to prevent and treat infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites in humans and animals. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time and no longer respond to medicines that are traditionally used to treat and prevent infections. When AMR occurs, it can cause an infection to become resistant to treatment and, in severe cases, be impossible to treat at all. The spread of drug resistance has become a global concern, especially in the case of "superbugs," which are microorganisms that have become resistant to many or all existing antimicrobials. AMR is something that can occur naturally over time through evolution. The main drivers that accelerate the emergence of AMR including but are not limited to (1) the overuse and misuse of antimicrobials, (2) lack of clean water, (3) poor sanitation and hygiene, (4) poor infection and disease prevention, (5) poor access to healthcare, (6) lack of enforcement and legislation. Bowling Green KY doctors are good at a lot of things. But treating a #superbug isn’t one of them. Then again, a doctor at UK and one in Louisville were clueless, also. I’m trying to get into a facility where the doctors will know what they’re doing and aggressively treat this. In the meantime, I’d love to find a doctor who could help manage my symptoms with #prophylacticantibiotics, to help me stay functional until I can get the treatment I need.…and you know how long that could take. But today I was off work and got to snuggle my kitties while sleeping in my recliner. I have the sweetest, most encouraging boyfriend who is the best at getting me to laugh even when I feel bad. My dad is nearby and always ready to help, whatever the need. My mom had Cracker Barrel delivered to me tonight because I’m having so much trouble eating. I watched #FastX last night. It’s funny how some movies can be so utterly ridiculous 😆 and unrealistic but still keep you engaged and wondering what the sequel will bring (despite being teased that the only reason I liked it was because Jason Momoa and Alan Ritchson were in it 😆😂). Tuberculosis (TB), an airborne disease, is seeing a rise in the United States. Reports show 8,331 cases in 2022 - up by 5.9% from last year, as per @cdcgov. TB spreads when someone who's infected coughs or talks and lets out bacteria into the air. Breathing in this germ-filled air can get you infected with TB bacteria. Caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis, TB usually affects the lungs but can also spread to other parts of the body such as the brain, kidneys, or spine. It is a serious illness that can be fatal if left untreated. The CDC recommends regular testing for those who are at high risk of contracting TB, such as individuals with weakened immune systems or those who have been in close contact with someone infected with TB.
