Sycamore on the Door 🌳 I was recently reminded of a memory of the old Irish tradition of putting sycamore on the door at the start of May. I don't do it, nor does my mother, but my granny did. I asked my mother did she know any more about it, as it is a tradition dying out. She told me that when my granny moved to West Cork, her neighbours weren't doing it. She also told me our neighbour still did it when I was a child. That woman was also a rural woman, younger than my grandmother and still kept up very old traditions. Even if we don't carry on these traditions, it is important to document them before living memories of them are completely gone. Do you remember people doing this annual tradition? I walk in the shadows of pine trees that have stood for longer than I've breathed the oxygen they create. Listening to their needles whispering in the wind I imagine the trees talking to each other. Reflecting on the human words and actions of those who've set foot before me. The pines look down over me, heavy with knowledge and in my heart I hear them say... "You will be ok. You're not the first to walk this path and you won't be the last." If only they could tell me more... I wait a moment, breathing in their scent. Then I wrap my arms around one of the trunks, hugging the rough bark that scratches up my arms.
