It's been a whirlwind of a week, but very rewarding. I had my first in-person lecture and workshop since Liam was born, and I was reminded of how much I enjoy it. I thought it would take a little while to get my footing, but things went smoothly. These lectures are often the first time people hear about me or see my work, and I've always used that as motivation to put on an engaging and inspiring talk. I want the program coordinators, the members and the guests to be pleasantly surprised and to be glad that they came to a lecture by someone they didn't know. I feel immensely proud when I can achieve that. My focus for the next little while will be scheduling and writing more lectures. I've started on a different design that's part of the same series as my (for the moment) failed pantone quilt challenge project. This one presents different piecing challenges, but I'm facing them head-on. Unfortunately, this project did not go as planned. To put it simply, the quilted grids in each of the circles are not square to each other, which affects the angle at which I was going to apply my appliqué pieces. Either the quilting looks lopsided or the appliqué pieces look lopsided. ...I can't live with either one. 🤪 I could rip out all the quilting and give it another try, or I can finish quilting the background and just leave it as it is. ...I'm leaning towards the latter. Lesson learned: Be more thoughtful about how things will line up. It's a minimalst design that needs to be accurate or the mistakes are too distracting. I'm not giving up on the concept, though. I'm going to give it another go, and make some changes: 1) Piece the circles into a larger piece of background fabric to avoid borders. 2) Mark the appliqué pieces on the quilt top and use the markings to guide the quilting. 3) Triple check that the quilting in each circle is lined up with the other. ...I'm also playing with the idea of making the quilt top and stretching it over a frame, skipping the quilting stage all together... 🤷♀️ I just don't know folks, but I think I'm taking this "learning opportunity" pretty well, so that's a win. 🤣 Words of encouragement welcome. . . . #shipsandviolins #quilting #quiltersofinstagram #quiltersofig #peachfuzz #pantonequiltchallenge2024 #canadianquilter #lessonslearned #modernpatchwork #modernquilter #modernquilts #loveyourcraft

#igquiltfest2024: Recent Finish - Just off the ironing board, in fact! This is a baby quilt for my nephew. It's my Arcturus Shield star pattern made in the same fabrics as my son's quilt. They'll be besties for sure! I got the itch to finish this yesterday. I had about 45% of the templates pieced. I prepared the rest of them throughout the day, and when it was time for Josh to spend time with Liam before dinner, I started sewing. I scarfed down some pizza slices at dinner, then fed and read to Liam, and dashed right back to the sewing room once he was asleep at 7:30 p.m. By 11 p.m. I had finished piecing all the templates, successfully fixed a piece I sewed incorrectly 🫣, and assembled the quilt (excluding the final centre seam). This morning, I finished the assembly and ripped out papers while Liam played in the studio with me. Day 5/100: Maia makes an appearance. Today's Reflection: I really enjoyed Kitty's (@nightquilter) #quiltcon lecture, Life as My Improv Coach, this afternoon. As a new mom, I can certainly relate to some of the challenges with balancing motherhood and the self. I always thought about the shift as doing more parenting and less quilting/business work. I thought only the quantity of these things could shift. But, giving it some thought, I think there's room to shift more than just how much quilting I do or how much time I spend on my business. To build on my previous post (4/100), perhaps one of the things that will change will be *how* I construct my quilts and *how* I write my patterns. I have fewer opportunities to sit at my sewing machine and work through hours of piecing now, but I do have more opportunities for handwork. How can my designs and pattern writing shift with me and compliment this new stage of life? Day 4/100: Another finish. Today's Reflection: I've always treasured time to focus. To get into the zone. Into a flow. I haven't had much of it lately and find myself bouncing hundreds of ideas in my head instead. Needless to say, it's an overwhelming state of mind. Thoughts of where to go next with Ships & Violins take up much of my mental energy. I love what I've built to date and want to continue growing it without compromising my creative voice. But my allocations for time and effort need some updating. I'll have to find some uninterrupted time to evaluate what S&V should continue to do and what needs to shift. I'm feeling all sorts of scattered as we plan for our holidays. My couch is cluttered with items for our weekend travels. Last weekend, we rearranged the nursery to host a #fadoroadquilt photoshoot. I needed some flat shots of the quilt without the wind, cold fingers, and tired arms that are so typical of quilt shoots in the wild. The nursery is a pretty small room, especially with light equipment and two adults - but our sweet Maia decided she was going to be in on the action and plunked herself down in the middle of the floor while we stepped cautiously around her to get the right shot. When all the photos had been snapped, she got up from the middle of the floor and sat right in front of the studio light, tongue lolling, and ready for her moment. So we gave it to her. She's a beauty, and she knows it. . . . I did it. I upgraded my sewing machine to a Pfaff after seeing @madaboutpatchwork's incredible Black Friday Weekend Deal. 💥 My grandmother's Janome has held its own over the last few years, and I definitely won't be parting with it. When my Pfaff arrives, my Jamome will get a day at the spa and serve as a secondary sewing station in the studio. My #fadoroadquilt is complete! I can't express just how satisfying it was to wrap up this project. Now, I'm focused on completing the pattern. If the design seems intimidating, I can assure you it comes together with ease. Simple strip sets are made into blocks, and the blocks are combined into sections. Nothing out of the usual here. The pattern is written in sections so that you can feel a sense of satisfaction each time you sit at your machine. The majority of September was spent waiting for Liam to arrive while making progress on my next quilt pattern, Fado Road. It's been a minute since an S&V pattern release, and I'm itching to get this one sewn up. As my energy returns, I'll be using Liam's nap times to continue sewing my sample. Behind the block view. I combined seven rows of squares into a larger block and spun 🔄 each of the intersecting seam allowances for a flat finish. I'm happy to announce that our little guy, Liam, arrived on September 29, and everyone is healthy and happy. We've spent the week settling into our new role as parents and getting to know Liam. Maia has been great with him too, which has been a big relief. I haven't ventured into the sewing room just yet, but perhaps during his next nap... Cork labels are fab! I discovered them early on in my S&V journey and have been using them ever since. I ordered them from @nationaletching on Etsy. They're 1" x 2". I cut one in half for my sewing pouches and used them as a zipper tab. For my quilts, I sandwich the bottom right edge in between the label and sew along the bottom. I love this because my logo is visible from the front, kind of like an artist's signature.
