L’itinerario alla scoperta del Bestiario di Roma ci conduce oggi in Piazza del Quirinale dinanzi alla Fontana dei Dioscuri, ovvero i due gemelli della mitologia greca e romana Castore e Polluce, figli di Zeus e Leda, qui raffigurati nell’atto di trattenere i loro Cavalli. Le sculture dei Dioscuri, alte più di 5 metri, un tempo ornavano le Terme di Costantino e già nel Medioevo diedero a questa zona il nome di Monte Cavallo in quanto il popolo chiamava le due statue "i domatori di cavalli". Dopo un primo restauro nel Quattrocento, nel 1588 l'architetto Domenico Fontana, per volere di Sisto V, le restaurò e le collocò ai lati di una vasca marmorea come sfondo monumentale all'asse viario proveniente da Porta Pia. Nel 1786 Pio VI incaricò l'architetto Giovanni Antinori di collocarle nella posizione attuale, ai lati dell'obelisco che un tempo ornava il Mausoleo di Augusto. L’itinerario alla scoperta del Bestiario di Roma ci conduce oggi a Piazza Capodiferro dove, sulla facciata laterale di Palazzo Ossoli, è situata una fontana che fu realizzata in sostituzione della fontana settecentesca conosciuta come la Fontana delle Mammelle, probabilmente realizzata su disegno di Francesco Borromini e costituita da un’erma femminile dalle cui mammelle fuoriusciva l’acqua: si ritiene che fu demolita in quanto giudicata indecente ed immorale. La fontana odierna, posta entro una nicchia poco profonda, è stata ricostruita sostituendo l’erma con una sagoma in legno dipinta a monocromo, le cui mammelle però non zampillano più. La Fontana di Trevi, sicuramente la più scenografica e la più famosa tra le fontane di Roma, costituisce la mostra dell'Acqua Vergine, l'acquedotto che Marco Vipsanio Agrippa condusse a Roma nel 19 a.C. per alimentare le sue Terme. In quest’area, Agrippa posizionò una delle fontane minori dell'acquedotto, costituita da tre vasche di raccolta rivolte verso l'attuale Piazza dei Crociferi. Nel 1453 Niccolò V incaricò Leon Battista Alberti di restaurare la fonte: in questa occasione le tre vasche furono sostituite con un unico vascone e la fontana iniziò a chiamarsi di Trejo, in riferimento al Trivio (cioè l'incrocio di tre vie) posto in corrispondenza dell'attuale Piazza dei Crociferi. Dopo i restauri del 1562 di Giacomo Della Porta e del 1640 di Gian Lorenzo Bernini (al quale si deve l’ampliamento della piazza e la trasformazione della fontana, ruotata ortogonalmente ed orientata come l’odierna), la realizzazione della fontana attuale si deve a Clemente XII che nel 1732 commissionò l’opera all’architetto Nicola Salvi. La nuova fontana, conclusa da Giuseppe Pannini ed inaugurata il 22 maggio 1762, è costituita da una grande nicchia centrale, fiancheggiata da quattro colonne corinzie sormontate da un grandioso attico con lo stemma di Clemente XII. Al centro della nicchia domina la statua di Oceano alla guida del carro a forma di conchiglia trainato da due cavalli marini guidati da altrettanti tritoni: l’intero gruppo scultoreo è opera dello scultore Pietro Bracci. Considering its monumental size and bombastic design, it might not surprise you to learn that the construction of the Trevi fountain was far from plain sailing for architect Nicola Salvi and his team in the 1730's. The construction team suffered a laundry list of injuries, including three deaths – a stonecutter was crushed by a block of travertine, a mason fell off the roof, and an apprentice slipped and cracked his head on the marble. The fountain took 30 years to finish, and the fiercely committed Salvi sadly didn’t live to see his creation brought to fruition, dying in 1751. According to some, Salvi too fell victim to the fountain, succumbing to a respiratory disease after spending so many years inhaling stone dust on the building site. Rome is justifiably famous for its array of elaborately sculpted public fountains, symbols of the key role that access to fresh water has played in the city’s evolution and expansion since antiquity. Known as the Fontana del Mascherone thanks to the carving of a wide-eyed ancient theatrical mask at its centre, this large fountain is located on lovely Via Giulia in the heart of the city’s historic centre. The fountain was commissioned by the powerful Farnese family, whose enormous palace is located nearby, to celebrate the opening of the Acqua Paola aqueduct in the early 17th century. To demonstrate their largess, in the past the Farnese arranged for the fountain to spew wine rather than water on holidays. Sadly these days you’ll only get H2O from its faucets! Piazza Mastai prende il nome da Pio IX Mastai che qui fece costruire, tra il 1860 ed il 1863, il Palazzo della Manifattura Pontificia dei Tabacchi su progetto di Antonio Sarti. L’edificio, originariamente più lungo con i fabbricati laterali, poi demoliti, presenta una facciata caratterizzata da otto colonne doriche che sovrastano l’alta base bugnata del pianterreno e sormontate da una trabeazione con la scritta “PIUS IX P M OFFICINAM NICOTIANIS FOLIIS ELABORANDIS A SOLO EXTRUXIT ANNO MDCCCLXIII”, ovvero “Pio IX Pontefice Massimo costruì dalle fondamenta la fabbrica dei tabacchi nell’anno 1863”. L’edificio fu ristrutturato nel 1927 e poi ricostruito negli anni Cinquanta su progetto di Cesare Pascoletti: fu in questa occasione che vennero demoliti i fabbricati laterali. Il nuovo palazzo fu destinato alla Direzione Generale dei Monopoli di Stato, mentre la manifattura fu trasferita alla Garbatella in un edificio inaugurato nel 1958. The Fountain of Cannonballs is located in the Via di Porta Castello in the Borgo district of Rome. It is one of the fountains designed in 1927 by Pietro Lombardi. L’itinerario alla scoperta degli Angeli di Roma ci conduce oggi dinanzi alla Fontana Sallustiana, situata tra Via Leonida Bissolati, Via Sallustiana e Via Friuli e realizzata in marmo, nel 1927, dallo scultore Antonio Mariani su disegno dell’architetto Ugo Giovannozzi. La fontana è costituita da una vasca semicircolare sovrastata da una composizione formata da una grande valva di conchiglia nelle cui volute di base sono inserite due cannelle che gettano acqua. La valva poggia su due Angeli che sorreggono una rete dalla quale tentano di fuggire due pesci che emettono getti d’acqua incrociati. The bronze turtles of the Fontana delle Tartarughe in Rome are actually replicas. The original turtles, attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini, were added in 1658 by order of Pope Alexander VII . Fontana di Trevi. La Fontana di Trevi è una vera e propria opera monumentale che ogni anno viene contemplata da milioni di turisti. La parte centrale si sviluppa come un arco di trionfo con una grande nicchia e ai lati colonne corinzie. In alto al centro si trova un'iscrizione “CLEMENS XII PONT MAX”, la quale ricorda che la realizzazione è stata voluta da Clemente XII. Inoltre, quattro statue del 1735 ornano la grande opera e a partire da sinistra simboleggiano l'Abbondanza dei frutti di Agostino Corsini, la Fertilità dei campi di Bernardo Ludovisi, i Doni dell'autunno di Francesco Queirolo e l'Amenità dei prati di Bartolomeo Pincellotti. Nella profonda nicchia centrale è collocata la statua di Oceano posizionato sopra una grande conchiglia trainata da due cavalli marini alati, uno rabbioso e l'altro pacifico, guidati da un tritono giovane e da uno adulto per evidenziare le diverse caratteristiche dell'età dell'uomo e della natura. Infine, le parti laterali della nicchia lasciano spazio alle statue della Salubrità e dell'Abbondanza di Filippo Della Valle, e i rilievi rappresentano la Vergine che mostra la sorgente ai soldati ad opera di Grossi. There are few corners of Rome as peaceful as Piazza Mattei, where the gurgling waters of the Fontana delle Tartarughe (Turtle Fountain) provide a melodious liquid soundtrack. According to popular and fictitious legend, the fountain was thrown together over the course of a single night in 1585 at the behest of the hopelessly debauched, gambling-addicted aristocrat Muzio Mattei. The story goes that Mattei’s upcoming nuptials to a wealthy heiress had been thrown into doubt after his future father-in-law observed him squandering much of his fortune in a single hand of cards. Eager to prove that he was no common wastrel, Mattei somehow had the masterpiece sculpted and installed in a matter of hours, and was heard the next morning boasting to the dumbstruck Duke "here's what a broke Mattei can achieve in just a few hours!" The real story is altogether darker. In fact the fountain was originally commissioned to provide water to the residents of the recently established Jewish Ghetto, but the Mattei Duke (who controlled the entrance gates to the quarter) quickly requisitioned the monument and had the planned fountain moved to his nearby property instead.
