The inshore lifeboat crew were paged at 3.56am on Tuesday to assist a drifting yacht in the river Medway ⛵️ The volunteer crew of the Sheerness inshore lifeboat ‘Buster’ launched after being tasked by the UK Coastguard to assist a 22-foot yacht that had run out of fuel and was not able to sail or anchor safely ⚓️ The casualty was found close to Oakham Ness Jetty and after putting a crew member onboard to attach a tow line it was towed to the Queenborough all-tide landing where it was safely secured. You may have seen that we recently attended our local RNLI station in Lowestoft a few weeks back to assist in cleaning their Shannon class all-weather lifeboat "Patsy Knight." Wow, what a whopper ! A Severn class lifeboat crashing through waves, Our nearest Severn class is based at Harwich RNLI, the Albert Brown 17-03. The Severn class weighs 40 tonnes and has 2 MTU engines producing over 1600hp plus a range of 250 nautical miles. (I hope that is correct). Our next planned training launch is tonight at 7pm, you might not see a Severn class but you might see a D class and B class launch. Our Volunteer Lifeboat Crew were tasked at 9:30, on the 25th May to a vessel suffering a mechanical & electrical failure in the shipping lanes, off Eastbourne. Once on scene, our crew established communications with the casualty vessel, and it was deemed most suitable to tow the casualty vessel to the closest safe haven, Sovereign Harbour. One thing I made a beeline for was the @peterbealesroses stand to see their newly introduced rose ‘Courage’ dedicated to the @rnli Living on the coast the RNLI is part of the fabric of our local village and we are acutely aware of how important the work of these volunteers is as we see the lifeboats from @new_quay_rnli as well as @cardiganlifeboat going in and out regularly to people in distress on the water here in Cardigan bay. So many lives would have been lost without them. As someone who regularly enjoys the water myself with @llangrannog_rhwyfo I’m grateful to know they are there if I ever need them. It’s a beautiful rose, the way the colour changes as it matures is gorgeous, and I will be ordering some for the rose garden I am creating in my front garden. The Princess Royal, presented a Silver Medal for Gallantry to Penlee RNLI coxswain Patrick ‘Patch’ Harvey for his pivotal role in saving eight French sailors during a hurricane on 31 October 2022 in hurricane conditions. Patch said: ‘It has been an incredible honour to have been invited to the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. The day has been really enjoyable, and it’s been a pleasure to attend with my fellow crew and our partners, who are in the background, supporting everything we do for the RNLI. Buckingham Palace garden party to mark 200 years of saving lives at sea. His Majesty The King has granted permission for a garden party at Buckingham Palace in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Salcombe Crew members were amongst other lifeboat volunteers who attended the RNLI 200th Anniversary Garden Party held by HRH The Princess Royal, accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and HRH The Duke of Kent. The Duke of Kent has been President of the RNLI since 1969 during which time volunteer lifeboat crews and beach lifeguards have saved more than 51,000 lives. Sir Tim Laurence is also a Vice President of the lifesaving charity and former Deputy Chair. The garden party brought together around 2,500 of the RNLI’s long-serving volunteers, staff and their families and featured an Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat in the palace grounds. Representing RNLI Salcombe were Jeanne Stevens, Symon Cater, Chris Turns and Andrew Arthur along with family members, with Andrew having the honour of being introduced to HRH The Princess Royal. RNLI Chief Executive Mark Dowie said: ‘We are incredibly honoured that His Majesty The King has granted permission for the RNLI 200th Anniversary Garden Party to take place at Buckingham Palace in celebration of 200 years of saving lives at sea. ‘Our hosts, The Princess Royal, The Duke of Kent, and Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, have been hugely supportive of our charity over many decades and it will be a huge honour and privilege for many of our volunteers and staff to meet them. Since the RNLI was founded on 4 March 1824, following an appeal to the nation from Sir William Hillary, the charity has saved more than 146,277 lives – this equates to an average of two lives saved every day for 200 years. RNLI volunteer Colin Dockerill has decided to retire after almost 16 years of volunteering for the Bridlington RNLI. For those people who have visited the Bridlington RNLI shop attached to the lifeboat station will no doubt have come across Colin Dockerill, who has been a regular volunteer at the RNLI shop for nearly 16 years. Colin, who has completed 15 years and 6 months as a volunteer, has decided that at the grand young age of 89 it is time to hand the reins over to a new shop manager. Colin has been an asset to the Bridlington RNLI for so long now it will be very sad to see him go, but he leaves with the best wishes of all the volunteers at Bridlington Lifeboat Station and we wish him all the best for the future, he will be greatly missed. James Thompson, RNLI Retail Lead for the North and East stated, ‘Colin has been a wonderful Volunteer Shop Manager for over 15 years. Under Colin’s leadership, the Bridlington Promenade shop has gone from strength to strength and has brought in an incredible amount of money to enable us to carry out our lifesaving work. Everyone at the Sheerness Lifeboat Station would like to say a big thank you to the Tesco Sheerness community champion 🥰 One of our volunteers went into the Sheppey store last week to have a chat with the community champion and the duty manager at the supermarket to explain the dangers that can be associated with inflatable watercraft - some of which are being sold at the store due to the nice weather the Island is expected to get this summer 🛶 We gave the shop our RNLI kayak and paddleboard leaflets to display alongside the products to ensure anyone purchasing the inflatables can stay safe while enjoying themselves on the beach 🛟 This year the shop doesn't seem to be selling buoyancy aids or lifejackets, which are imperative to keeping users safe when out on the water. Because of this, the duty manager did confirm she'd raise the matter in their next Tesco meeting and also highlight concerns raised about the way these products are sold at coastal locations. 🚨 REMEMBER 🚨 Inflatables can be great fun when they’re used safely, but every summer, they’re one of the most common reasons our lifeboat crews and lifeguards are called to action. They’re not designed for the beach so it’s easy to get swept out to sea.
