One of my favorite Newport, Rhode Island mansions that doesn't get a lot of attention is Ridgemere, at 11 Leroy Avenue. Just look at that shape, wide porch, and dash of copper against that brick. J'adore. Ridgemere was designed by the architecture firm Peabody and Stearns and completed in 1898 for a Miss Fanny Foster. Foster was the daughter of John Foster, a Boston real estate investor and former wholesale merchant. They lived at 25 Marlborough Street in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston (thanks again backbayhouses.org!!) John Foster died in 1897 and Fanny continued in the home until 1903 when she moved to 26 Fenway. From the Bellevue Avenue Historic District nomination form to the National Register of Historic Places: "Ridgemere," 1898, by Peabody & Stearns. Queen Anne style with applied Colonial Revival elements; two-and-one-half stories with brick walls and a slate-covered hip roof with copper-sheathed dormers; numerous plate-glass windows; entrances in porch at front center and under porte-cochere on east side; wrought-iron frontal fence contained within brick piers.
