I think this was my favourite show garden? There were so many amazing ones! This is The Pulp Friction - Growing Skills Garden in the All About Plants Category designed by Will Dutch & Tin-Tin Azure-Marxen. This was a forest garden based planting with everything being either edible or useful in some way. Right up my alley! Plus, almost everything was hardy for us here (except the medlar).All materials were donated or found/recycled. Beauty and function at its very best! The overstorey was dominated by multistemmed birch and encompassed by a halo of red, recycled fire hose. This hose also popped up around the garden as holders for bamboo tubes for native bees. The understory included many plants familiar to us: columbine, calendula, bellflower, epimedium, woodruff, coral bells, osrrich fern, oregano, sages, poppy, raspberry, sedums, hens and chicks, thymes and violas. The garden was bordered by a scarlet runner bean screen one one side and metal gabions filled with recycled materials and planted into with succulents and alpine plants. Also, it is perfect habit for wildlife, including beneficial insects (and hedgehogs if you are the UK)! The team have done an amazing job to pack up all the plants and materials over the weekend, taking time to make sure everything is safe and secure. Our gorgeous gabions are ready to rumble! Designed to hold repurposed materials of all different kinds, the gabion baskets have grown into a lovely feature of the garden! Our volunteers and Members have been sourcing and sorting materials for weeks, and we think it's definitely paid off - Just look at the transformation! Even whilst building on-site, we've loved being able to collect and recycle surplus materials from other garden exhibits to prevent them going to waste. The Annual Nottinghamshire Police Awards ceremonies are a celebration of the outstanding achievements of offices, staff & volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty to serve and to protect our community. I was honoured to attend one of the ceremonies last night and meet many of the finalists and winners of the awards, some truly outstanding people. I heard of some outstanding work in all areas from traffic, to community engagement to child abuse. We are lucky to have these men and women working within our county ensuring that it is a safer place for us all to live and work in. Thank you to all Nottinghamshire police, staff and volunteers and huge congratulations to all those nominated for awards this year. We had a great visit this week from Tin-Tin of @dutchlandscapearchitects to see what’s been happening to the plants for our @the_rhs Chelsea Flower Show. Beth @bethnottingham along with member Elliot visited the greenhouses of @uniofnottingham and Brooke Farm nursery with great reports of growing success. They also went to Beth’s own greenhouses before ending at the Pulp Friction garden in Bestwood to chat with member Albert and the gardening team. Tin-Tin had his tape measure to check plant height and overall health. We can now say that the beans are flowering, the alpine strawberries are spreading nicely and we have a few surprise new plants being added to our Growing Skills Garden. Beth is very happy that the Tin-Tin is so positive about it all! Every Thursday the Bestwood Park Church hosts the BESTOP Kitchen - this is a community social eating lunch which has been run by the church for 6 years.💚 For the past 18 months Pulp Friction has taken on the preparation, cooking & serving of the 2-course meal.🍲 We currently cater for around 40 people each week. Everyone is welcome . This is a great opportunity for our Members to learn and showcase their skills to the local community. 🏘️ The regular team of Chezelle, Beth, Lucy, Shianu, Albert, Katy & Anushka are supported by staff members Teresa & Angela. Teresa heads up the cooking team and Angela works with the Servers. Did you know that just 5% of adults nationally with learning disabilities are in paid employment? Pulp Friction CIC is a social enterprise that works with people who have learning disabilities and/or Autism to develop their social independence and work-readiness skills. This year they have partnered with @dutchlandscapearchitects to create a garden for the RHS Chelsea Flower show. Each of the 5 trees that appears in the garden symbolises a step towards inclusion and growth. We are proud to be supplying waste slab cuts from our timber milling process that would usually be discarded to be included in the structure of the garden. We look forward to telling you more about this project as it develops. The Chelsea @the_rhs Growing Skills story continues. Back to the greenhouses of @uniofnottingham the team consider what is flourishing and what may not be! Growing for the Chelsea Flower show is demanding and needs sound judgement. 💚🌸 We see lots of healthy growth on most of our previous planting…. but there are a couple of disappointments! No problem tho! We have time to re sow and the failed sowing are recycled into new potting compost. No waste!♻️ Michael the University gardener gives an expert demonstration of ‘potting on’ plants to larger containers, the focus of the morning’s session.
